The best multi-variant Laocoon compositions

Laocoon was, at the time of the Troyan Horse, a Troyan priest who was killed by two giant serpents. The stories of the ancient Greece and of the Romans differ. In both versions there is nothing related to the characteristics of what is called a Laocoon draughts-position. It seems to be fully unclear why those are called Laocoon.
Many of the words commenly used by draughts lovers are not very well defined. Like for instance the words Problem, Endgame, Forcing, Combination, etc. The same goes for Laocoon. For this article we keep it simple. We speak about positions of only one White King, without any further Whites, against let us say three Black Man as a minimum. White wins by attacking more than one Black at the same time in different directions, threatening to capture. In addition to that, this article only contains Laocoon positions with more than one thematic (sharp) variant. There are very many Laocoon positions published, as I learned from Wim de Zwart and Johan Konings who conduct very large collections of problems and motives, as most of you will know. I am grateful for their assistance enabling me selecting the very best Laocoon compositions ever published.

We spreken over posities met slecht één witte dam, zonder andere witte stukken, tegen laten wij zeggen minstens drie zwarte stukken.

King against three. Dam tegen drie.

The beautiful final by J.Wagter: Black 8, 13, 19, White 15 to move, has inspired many problemists to compose combinations. Strangely enough there is hardly any endgame based upon it. The first Applet shows a simple endgame I made recently. It results to the position of J. Wagter with actually two variants that might be considered as Laocoon. It is one of the most interesting positions of a White King against three Black.

King against four. Dam tegen vier.

Many of the Laocoon positions collected by Johan Konings and Wim de Zwart might be the result of a combination worth to be collected, but do contain only one sharp variant or even no one at all. However some of them have several thematic variants. A nice example is illustrated below. The name of the author of the Laocoon is unknown and we could not find any reasonable combination based upon it. So I made one myself which is shown here. Composing combinations on Laocoon positions is not easy. The Blacks are spread over the whole Board with none at the borders. The King cannot reach his position by a capture, the promotion has to be a move and the White Man should preferably not be on the line 6-10 in the initial position.

The previous one was a very simple Laocoon. The next is one of the most interesting Laocoon positions with 5 Blacks, invented by V. Bieliauskas (see FMJD PWCP 2008 nr.41). The combination is very basic, but not easy to improve. The Lacoon contains five really different thematic variants!

This Laocoon is from A. Nikolaev. As opposed to a very good combination from him we will see later on, he was not very lucky with his composition based upon this six pieces Laocoon. His Black 2, 10, 14, 20, 30, 31, White 8, 13, 18, 19, 23, 29 composition has rather peculiar interchangeable moves, 23-19 or 9-3. His combination cannot be saved, so I made a totally different combination that is presented here. The Laocoon is the best with six Blacks that we could find.

Andreas Kuyken invented in 1972 the next Laocoon and the nice combination leading to it. I will give some comments below the Applet, but for futher details see the Annex, a separate article following this one. The articles are in reverse order, so the Annex is published a bit earlier. Here it is also explained how to capture, because that is not always so easy to see, in particular when White has a choice with the same number of Blacks to capture.

King against nine!! Dam tegen negen!!

The reason for presenting first the Laocoon with nine Blacks and later those with eight is that these have more sharp variants than the one with nine Blacks. Moreover there is a story to tell about the eight Blacks Laocoons and the outstanding combinations. Anyway, the one with nine is very interesting as well, it is probably the maximum size of the Laocoons. There are more of this size, but this one of P.C. Bais 1940 is the best of them. For details and how to capture see again the Annex.

The final part of this article starts with a composition of A.Nikolaev. As explained above it is very difficult to add beautiful combinations to Laocoon positions, with all the Black pieces scattered over the board. When the Laocoon is very large there is hardly room for adding an additional Black to be captured during the combination. Taking that into account the combination of A. Nikolaev is one of the greatest combinations ever. The White to become a King is far away from the promotion line, several majority captures, a number of Blacks are brought where they are required, etc. However, his Laocoon position is not the best possible. This will be explained after the Applet and the list of thematic variants.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W17,20,22,28,32,35,38,39,42,43,44:B9,10,13,15,18,21,24,26,27,29,31."] 1. 42-37 31x33 2. 22x31 33x11 3. 35-30 26x28 4. 30x8 15x24 5. 39-33 29x40 6. 8-2

The sharp variants are. De scherpe varianten zijn:
- (18-22) 2 x 45 (28-32 A) 45-29 (32-37) 29-47. A. (28-33) 45-34 (33-38) 34-48.
- (21-27) 2 x 35.
- (24-29) 2 x 35.
- (40-44) 2 x 50.
- (40-45) 2 x 50.

So far it seems to be perfect, but the Laocoon can be improved significantly in two different ways!

When I made the two composions of which one is shown further below I was not aware of the composition of A.Nikolaev. It is very well possible that Alexander Moisejev did not know the one of A. Nikolaev and those of me neither. Anyway, it is A. Moisejev who found that the Black on 9 is not required for the Laocoon position of A. Nikolaev. The Laocoon position is far better when the Black at 9 is removed!! Then it contains the same sharp variants as the one of A. Nilkolaev. (18-22) and (21-27) and (24-29) and (40-44) and (40-45), but also three more!!
- (10-14) 2 x 35
- (28-32) 2 x 5
- (28-33) 2 x 5

A.Moisejev made a combination on the Laocoon without the Black on 9, but the best composition is simply taking the one of A. Nikolaev and remove the Black on 9! Then we have a world-class Laocoon composition. See the next Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W17,20,22,28,32,35,38,39,42,43,44:B10,13,15,18,21,24,26,27,29,31."] 1. 42-37 31x33 2. 22x31 33x11 3. 35-30 26x28 4. 30x8 15x24 5. 39-33 29x40 6. 8-2

Independently of all this I found the Laocoon position that is also much better than the one of A. Nikolaev. The only difference is that the Black on 11 is now on 7 (9 remains), but the effect is astonishing! Now we have two additional sharp variants compared with the Laocoon of A. Nikolaev, but most importantly a far more interesting small endgame than included in all other Laocoon positions!! Of course it is still simple, but it can be called an endgame, not only a final position. The combination of A. Nikolaev is not possible with 11 on 7, so automatically I made something really different, of which the majority captures steal the show. 27-21 (23 x 43) 21 x 1 (43- 48, 48 x 30) is a draw.

27-21 (23 x 43) 21 x 1 (43- 48, 48 x 30) is remise.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W24,26,27,29,30,31,32,38,39:B7,9,10,13,17,18,23,35,40."] 1. 26-21 17x28 2. 24-19 23x21 3. 19x8 35x24 4. 8-2

The main variant is (9-13), not sharp at all in the A.Nikolaev position and obviously not possible without the Black at 9. The (9-13) variant has two fully sharp (harakiri) variants (all Laocoon positions have harakiri variants) and two longer variants, thematic with one dual.

-(9-13) 3 x 26 (18-22) 26-21!! (22-28 A) 21-38 (28-33 B, C) 38 x 4. A. (22-27) 21 x 5.
B. (10-15) 38-29 dual (28-32) 24-42 (15-20) 42 x 15 (32-37) 15-47. C. (10-14) 38-29 dual (28-32) 29-42 (14-19) 42-15! (19-23) 15-20!(32-37) 20-14.
Further sharp variants are:
- (7-11) 2 x 35.
- (18-22) 2 x 45 (28-32 D) 45-29 (32-37) 29-47. D. (28-33) 45-34 (33-38) 34-48.
- (21-27) 2 x 35.
- (24-29) 2 x 35
- (40-44) 2 x 50.
- (40-45) 2 x 50.

Quite remarkable is that the Moisejev variation (without the Black at 9, with 7 on 11) can be reached both by the A. Nikolaev combination and by my totally different combination! This is also the case for the A.Nikolaev Laocoon (with 9 and 11). My Laocoon (with 7 and 9) can only be reached with my combination. So the one with the best variants can probably only be realized in one way. Maybe this is a bit a pity, because other combinations would be welcome, but on the other hand it makes it unique.

I strongly recommend the readers to use a normal draughts board, or a magnetic one, when studying the Annex. This gives a far better understanding of the larger Laocoons than by playing the Applets and reading the text.

So, see the Annex.

Dus, bekijk de Annex.

Annex to The Best Laocoon Compositions

This Annex belongs to the Blog article The best multi-variant Laocoon compositions. It gives the full solutions of the largest Laocoons, with 7, 8, or 9 Black Man. The solution is written in such a way that it shows how to capture. Between the start and the end of the capture the fields are given where the White King makes an intermediate landing before capturing the next Black. How to capture can be a bit complicated, in particular when White has the choice between more than one capture with the same number of Black pieces, which is quite often the case. The reader can judge himself if a variant is fully sharp, or contains a dual, or is not sharp at all. The use of a draughts-board will be very helpful.

Will this composition still be found in 2050?

Now, and in the coming years even more, we see a very large number of draughts-compositions published on Internet world-wide. Everybody can publish any position he likes, without any rules or quality standards. There is nothing wrong with that, but when somebody wants to find compositions of a genre and the quality he likes it wil be extremely difficult to find them after many years of the date of publishing. Say 2050. A method has to be found for formal registration in well managed collections with advanced searching capabilities. This article shows a composition that might be worth to keep available for a long time and preferably easy to find for the draughts lovers.

The last move of Black (25-30)-see the Applet- is very well understandable. Black hopes to escape from his difficult position by surprising moves. See below. However, White has a far better plan.
- 40-35 (16-21, 11-16, 13 x 24, 16 x 7) 31-27 (4-10, 8 x 28) 27-21 (28-32) 21-16 (2-8)=.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W18,22,23,26,28,29,31,40,42,43,44:B2,4,8,9,11,13,14,16,17,20,30."] 1. 31-27 30-34 2. 40-35 34-40 3. 42-37 40x38 4. 26-21 17x26 5. 37-31 26x37 6. 27-21 16x27 7. 22x33 13x22 8. 28x6 9-13

The last move of Black (9-13) was forced, but also seems good enough to survive, because of a number of small combinaties. See the diagram and the variants below it.

- 33-28 (13-19!) 6-1 (8-12, 20-24, 4 x 33)=.
- 33-28 (13-19!) 35-30 (8-12) 30-25 (2-7)=.
- 35-30 (2-7/8-12) 30-24 (4-10) 24 x 4 (14-19) 4 x 1 (19 x 39) =. This variant is shown by the next Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,23,29,33,35:B2,4,8,13,14,20."] 1. 35-30 2-7 2. 30-24 4-10 3. 24x4 14-19 4. 4x1 19x39

The same variant applies when Black plays (8-12) instead of (2-7), if there was not the fantastic surprise shown by the next Applet!!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,23,29,33,35:B2,4,8,13,14,20."] 1. 35-30 8-12 2. 30-24 4-10 3. 24x4 14-19 4. 4x7 19x39 5. 6-1 2x11 6. 1-6

This amazing detail paves the way for the first of the two main variants of this composition. The first part of this variant is shown by the next Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,23,29,33,35:B2,4,8,13,14,20."] 1. 35-30 8-12 2. 30-24 20-25 3. 24-19 13x24 4. 29x9 4x13 5. 6-1 2-7

The way to win now seems to be 33-28. However, the variant below proves otherwise.
- 33-28? (13-18!) 23-19 (25-30) 19-13, 28-22 (9-13) 22-17, 1 x 25 (13-19) 25-3 (21-26!) =.

The winning move is 23-19!! Later we will see that the other and totally different main variant is also decided by the sacrifice 23-19!!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK1,23,33:B7,12,13,25."] 1. 23-19 13x24 2. 33-28 25-30 3. 28-22 30-35 4. 22-18 12x23 5. 1x15 35-40 6. 15-33 40-45 7. 33-50

It has be made clear now that White wins after 35-30 (8-12) 30-24. We have also seen that after 35-30 (2-7) 30-24 is a draw. Below we show first a side-variant of the second main variant. Also in this side variant White has to play very precisely with the moves 30-25! and 33-28!. The remarkable thing is that also in this little side variant the decisive move is 23-19!! However, before playing the Applet I show you another , not sharp, but funny variant.

- 35-30 (2-7) 6-1 (14-19) 1 x 25 over 8, (19 x 39) 25-9 (13-19) 29-24, 30-25, 25 x 43.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,23,29,33,35:B2,4,8,13,14,20."] 1. 35-30 2-7 2. 6-1 8-12 3. 1-6 12-17 4. 6x9 14x3 5. 30-25 4-9 6. 25x14 9x20 7. 33-28 3-9 8. 23-19

It is about time now for showing the second main variant, in my view it is the most beautiful of the two. However, we do not start with the most beautiful part of it, but show another sub-variant first.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,23,29,33,35:B2,4,8,13,14,20."] 1. 35-30 2-7 2. 6-1 8-12 3. 1-6 12-17 4. 6x9 4x13 5. 30-24 7-12 6. 24x15 12-17 7. 29-24 17-22 8. 24-20 14x25 9. 15-10 13-19 10. 23x14 25-30 11. 10-4 30-35 12. 4x27 35-40 13. 27-49 40-45 14. 49-40 45x34 15. 33-29 34x23

As said before the sacrifice 23-19!! is the decisive one in both main, but totally different, variants. The second of them is shown here at full lenghth, from the initial position of the composition on.

A precious and precise end game

Prelude

Before presenting the end game I made yesterday, I show you a composition published many years ago. At the end of this article you will understand what the connection is between the two.

I do not add much comments to this forcing. Please take notice of the key move of this composition, the surprising 1-23!!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W15,22,26,28,34,40,47,49:B2,11,14,16,19,20,24,36."] 1. 34-29 24x33 2. 15x13 33-38 3. 49-43 38x49 4. 22-17 49x21 5. 26x6 16-21 6. 6-1 21-26 7. 1-23 14-20 8. 23-34 2-7 9. 34x1 26-31 10. 47-42 36-41 11. 42-37 41x23 12. 1x15 31-37 13. 15-47

The end game

The end game of the diagram below looks easy at first glance, but with the best defence of Black it appears that White has to play very precisely in order to reach the particular final.

White plays 13-8. Two simple variants are both winning by 8-2 followed by 2-7.
Wit speelt 13-8. Twee eenvoudige varianten winnen beide door 8-2, gevolgd door 2-7.
- (23-29/22-28) 8-2 (22-28/23-29)2-7.
- (22-28) 8-2 (28-32) 2-7.

So it looks like it that 8-2 is the way to win in all variants, but that is not the case at all. After 13-8 (22-27) the only way to win is 8-3! All further White moves of the first Applet are the only way to win! However, it still is a rather easy variant, but only because Black plays (20-24)instead of (20-25).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W13,39,47:B20,22,23,31."] 1. 13-8 22-27 2. 8-3 20-24 3. 3-26 31-36 4. 26-42 24-30 5. 42-38 27-31 6. 38-42 30-35 7. 42x26 35-40 8. 39-34 40x29 9. 26-12

However, after 13-8 (22-27) 8-3 Black can also play (20-25!). It seems to be that White can win in the same way, but the variant below shows the difference.

13-8 (22-27) 8-3 (20-25) 3-26 (31-36) 26-42 (27-32!) 42-15 (25-30) 15-20 (32-37!) =.

White has to play differently. So White plays 3-17. Right away we have a variant: (31-37) 17-26 (27-31) 47-41! 26 x 5 (25-30) 39-33 (30-34) 33-28. So Black does not play (31-37), but (31-36). See and play the Applet. Please notice that after 3-17 (31-36) 17-33 (25-30) White wins as shown by the first Applet of this end game. In addition there is a double opposition after (23-28, 36 x 27). That is why Black plays (27-32) in the Applet below.

Wit moet dus anders spelen. Zodoende speelt wit 3-17. Meteen dient zich al een variant aan: (31-37) 17-26 (27-31) 47-41! 26 x 5 (25-30) 39-33 (30-34) 33-28. Wit speelt dus geen (31-37), maar (31-36). Zie en speel de volgende Applet. Let erop dat wit na 3-17 (31-36) 17-33 (25-30) wint zoals de eerste Applet van dit eindspel laat zien. Er is ook nog een dubbele opposite na (23-28, 36 x 27). Daarom speelt zwart (27-32) in de onderstaande Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W8,39,47:B20,23,27,31."] 1. 8-3 20-25 2. 3-17 31-36 3. 17-33 27-32 4. 33-28 32-38 5. 28x14 25-30 6. 39-33 38x29 7. 14-20 29-34 8. 20-25

A nice composition, with four interesting variants. However, there is a surprise! After 3-17 Black should not play (31-36?), but as the variant given below. A really outstanding false solution!

8-3 (20-25)3-17 (25-30!) 17-12 (23-28) 12-26 (31-36) 26-31 (36-41!)=.

It seems obvious that White should not play 3-17, but 3-8 in order to prevent (25-30). However, after 3-8 (31-36) White cannot win!! This makes the false solution even more remarkable!

No way to win? Of course there is, otherwise I do not show the end game. The next Applet gives the first winning variant after 8-3 (20-25), with the same final as in a previous Applet, but reached otherwise. The climax of the composition is the last Applet, a very different win!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W8,39,47:B20,23,27,31."] 1. 8-3 20-25 2. 3-12 23-28 3. 12-26 31-36 4. 26-37 27-32 5. 37-46 32-38 6. 46x14 25-30 7. 39-33 38x29 8. 14-20 29-34 9. 20-25

Now is the time to show the main variant. If I may say so, it is such a variant where all the moves deserve an exclamation mark!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W13,39,47:B20,22,23,31."] 1. 13-8 22-27 2. 8-3 20-25 3. 3-12 23-28 4. 12-26 31-36 5. 26-37 28-33 6. 39x28 25-30 7. 37-48 30-35 8. 48-34 27-31 9. 47-42 36-41 10. 42-37 41x23 11. 34x36 35-40 12. 36-22 40-45 13. 22-50

Of course there are two other simple thematic variants in the final. See below.

- (35-40, 36-41) 42-37, 45 x 36.
- (31-37, 36 x 27) and now of course not 34-18?, but 28-22.

Zie boven.

Though I composed a number of more complex end games with more variants, for instance some of them participating in World Championships, I consider this end game as one of my favourites. Anyway, do not play the Applets automaticaly and have a look at the variants, otherwise you cannot fully understand the end game. Have fun!

49-44 (8-12) 28-22 (14-20 A, 23-28, 28 x 48, 48 x 50).
A (9-13) 44-39 (15-20) 39-34 (6-11) 32-28 (23 x 21 B) 34 x 23 (19 x 48) 30 x 6 (18 x 27) 37-31 (26 x 37) 40-34 (48 x 30) 35 x 15.
B (23 x 41) 34 x 23 (19 x 48) 30 x 6 (20 -24) 22 x 13 (14-20) 25 x 14 (3-8) 13 x 2 (41-46) 48 x 36.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W25,27,28,30,32,33,35,37,38,40,43,45,49:B3,6,8,9,14,15,16,18,19,23,24,26,29."] 1. 43-39 9-13 2. 39-34 15-20 3. 49-43 8-12 4. 43-39 6-11 5. 28-22 12-17 6. 33-28 17-21 7. 37-31 26x37 8. 32x41 21x43 9. 39x48 23x32 10. 34x12 11-17 11. 12x21 16x18

Zo won Auke dus.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W25,27,28,30,32,33,34,35,37,38,39,40,45:B3,6,12,13,14,16,18,19,20,23,24,26,29."] 1... 3-9 2. 28-22 6-11 3. 32-28 23x41 4. 34x23 19x17 5. 30x10 18-23 6. 25x3 23-29 7. 33x24 16-21 8. 27x9 41-47 9. 3x21 47x16

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W16,22,25,35,39,40:B6,14,24,29,41."] 1. 22-18 41-46 2. 40-34 29x40 3. 35x44 24-29 4. 39-33 29x38 5. 18-12 46-23 6. 12-8 38-42 7. 16-11 6x17 8. 8-2 42-47 9. 2-16 23-37 10. 44-40 37-46 11. 16-7 17-21

Alexander Baljakin in topvorm!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W24,25,33,37,38,39,42,44,47,48,49:B1,2,3,4,12,15,17,18,22,23,27."] 1. 48-43 2-8 2. 24-20 15x24 3. 33-29 23x34 4. 39x19 3-9 5. 19-14 9x20 6. 25x14 18-23 7. 44-39 1-7 8. 39-34 8-13 9. 38-32 27x38 10. 42x33 13-19 11. 33-29 19x10 12. 29x27 10-14 13. 37-32 14-19 14. 43-38 17-22 15. 27x18 12x23 16. 38-33 19-24 17. 49-44

Nederland is dus uitstekend vertegenwoordigd!

Better than World Championship compositions?

This article contains two compositions with very high scores of the third Personal World Championship Problems (PWCP III) as well as two new compositions not published before and not competing in any tournament. The World Championship compositions are compared with the new ones by discussing a number of aspects so that the reader can judge himself about the different qualities of the four compositions.

The first Applet shows the composition of M. Tsvetov that in Category C (free theme)reached a very high ranking (second place of 42 competing compositions).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,11,21,23,29,41,43,47:B1,8,12,18,32,34,35,37,40."] 1. 11-7 37x46 2. 47-41 46x37 3. 21-17 12x21 4. 23x3 34x23 5. 3x48 1x12 6. 6-1

A very nice final is reached now, deserving a high ranking. After (40-45) there are two thematic variants given below:

- (40-45) 1 x 40 (35 x 44) 43-38 (32 x 43) 48 x 50.
- (40-45) 1 x 40 (45 x 34) 43-38 (32 x 43) 48 x 25 (35-40) 25-39 (40-45) 39-50.
However, the best thing is the third thematic variant as the next Applet shows.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:WK1,43,K48:B12,32,35,40."] 1... 32-38 2. 1x47 40-45 3. 43-38 35-40 4. 48-39 45-50 5. 39-44 50x42 6. 47x45

Of course it is not easy to add a combination to this nice final. The jury wil have taken that into account. Anyway, the result is not impressive. The intial position is not very aesthitic and shows a minority of White, a so called unfinished composition. The moves before the end game appears are not very interesting. Let us compare the prize winning composition of Tsvetov with a new composition of Alexander Moisejev that he has sent to me recently.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W16,24,28,38,43,44,47:B8,13,17,19,30,31,35."] 1. 28-22 17x28 2. 16-11 31-37 3. 11-7 35-40 4. 44x35 13-18 5. 24x33 37-42 6. 35x24 8-12 7. 7x18 42-48 8. 33-28 48x42 9. 47x38

The initial position looks far better. It invites having a closer look at the possible moves at both sides. As first move 43-39, with the threat 28-23, looks very good, but Black replies with (19-23!, 8-12, 12 x 3) and White cannot win. The moves before the final are interesting, because Black defends himself with surprising moves. At the end there are two thematic variants. When Black plays (42-48) directly White wins by 2 (13) 29! (35) 30, 38. The Applet shows the main variant with (8-12, 42-48), a remarkable one against six!

The Tsvetov composition ends with three nice thematic variants, the second thematic variant of the composition of Moisejev is a bit plain. However, each of the three of Tsvetov is well known, combining them is the achievement. The main variant of Moisejev is fully original. Moisejev scores better concerning most of the other aspects in my view. Up to you as reader of this article which one you prefer.

We go to a higher level now. Vladimir Matus is by far the most successful draughts composer concerning championships and other tournaments ever. He also won this PWCP III very convincingly. Below we present the composition with the highest score of all the many compositions of all the four categories. It is the compostion of Vladimir Matus of Category D, the second place for this category was also for Matus! We play the Applet till the final of one of the two main variants is reached.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,7,11,19,38,39,41:B10,16,20,27,28,29,36,40."] 1. 6-1 36x47 2. 39-33 28x39 3. 1-6 47x33 4. 19-14 20x9 5. 7-2 16x7 6. 2x15

Three simple variants now. Drie eenvoudige varianten.
-(33-47) 6-33 (47 x 24) 15 x 45.
-(33-47) 6-33 (47 x 29) 15 x 33 (40-45) 33-50.
-(33-50) 15-33, 6 x 35.

Obviously this is only the start. In the case of Matus you can expect much more. Dit is natuurlijk slechts het begin. Bij Matus kan je veel meer verwachten.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,7,11,19,38,39,41:B10,16,20,27,28,29,36,40."] 1. 6-1 36x47 2. 39-33 28x39 3. 1-6 47x33 4. 19-14 10x19 5. 7-1 16x7 6. 1x21

- (50) 21-17, 35 (33) 30 (33-38) 48.
- (50) 21-17, 35 (34) 44.
- (45) 50 (33) 6 (50) 21-17.
- (47 or 42) 38, 35 (33) 30 (33-38) 48
- (47 or 42) 38, 35 (34) 44.
So we have in total eight thematic variants!! Thematic variants was the theme of this Category. However, in this case very much the same. Anyway, the jury was impressed. As with the one of Tsvetov we also se a White minority in the initial position. The initial position of Matus does not look good either and the first moves are not very interesting as well. The highlight is of course the move 19-14!!

We zien dus acht scherpe varianten!!

In order to compete with the composition of the World Champion we need something much different. For this we present a composition by Alexander Moisejev in cooperation with E. Sklyar from Israel. I arranged it a bit, with agreement of the authors. This time it is not the number of thematic variants that counts, but the very fine way the climax is reached. Judge yourself.

Oordeel zelf.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W24,31,36,37,40,43,44,45,47:B8,9,21,22,23,26,28,32,35."] 1. 31-27 22x42 2. 47x16 28-32 3. 16-11 23-28 4. 11-6 28-33 5. 6-1 33-38

It seems that Black has forced the draw, because after 1-29, 44-39, 29 x 19 Black is just in time with (26-31!). The same goes for 44-39, 45-40, 1-12 (49 x 19), 12 x 37 (26-31!). However, the next two Applets show how to win.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK1,24,36,40,43,44,45:B8,9,26,32,35,38."] 1. 44-39 35x33 2. 45-40 38x49 3. 1-12 49x13 4. 12x27 13x31 5. 36x27

And finally. En nu tot slot.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK1,24,36,40,43,44,45:B8,9,26,32,35,38."] 1. 44-39 35x33 2. 45-40 38x49 3. 1-12 49x19 4. 12x39 32-37 5. 39-28 37-42 6. 28-37 42x31 7. 36x27

Opinion
Vladimir Matus was right of course with selecting his compositions for Category D as well as for the other categories. He knows very well what kind of compositions get high points from a jury, in particular when most of the jury members are from East Europe. This is the way to become World Champion. However, these kind of compositions with the main goal to get as many thematic variants as possible is not everyone´s taste. The compositon of Moisejev as well as the one together with Sklyar show active play from both colours and a nice and original climax. The initial position, forcings, combination, the defense of Black and the surprise at the end are all in harmony.
In many compositions competing in Championships the interesting part is only at the end after a number of rather boring moves without any active role of Black. If it was not a championship, publishing only the end would be better for the public.
I will give you an example. We take the idea of Tsvetov and reach the beautiful multi-thematic position in another way. Of course it could not participate at the same competition, but it is a nicer way to reach the thematic variants with a better looking initial position. It is simply a nicer presentation.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W11,39,43,K48:B12,23,29,30,32."] 1. 11-6 30-35 2. 39-34 29x40 3. 6-1 32-38 4. 1x47 40-45 5. 43-38 35-40 6. 48-39 45-50 7. 39-44 50x42 8. 47x45

Anyway, I hope this article will bring something you like, whatever your taste is.

Mening

World Record Alexander Georgiev

The World Record Clock Simultaneous Games was held in Emmeloord at the same location of the World Championship Draughts 2011 and organized by mainly the same people.

In short the ( FMJD) rules for such a World Record to be recognized are:
- At least 25 opponents.
- The result must be at least 70 % of the possible score.
- The opponents must have a rating, the average rating must be 1950 FMJD points or the comparable (recalculated) KNDB rating.

Alexander Georgiev took the challenge wit 42 opponents! In this case 70 % of the possible score means 84 * 0,7 = 59 points. For example 20 wins, 19 draws and 3 lost. Or 21 wins, 17 draws and 4 lost.

Of 21 gewonnen, 17 remise and 4 verloren.

The tempo was (also according to the FMJD rules) 50 moves in two hours and one hour for the next 25 moves. This applied both for Georgiev and for his opponents. However, the very important difference is that of course Georgiev can only be at one board at the same time and during that time all his clocks are running where the opponents have made a move! This means in practice that Georgiev had to make his round at 42 boards as quickly as possible and had very little time to think about a move. Most of the time he played immediately.
This situation implies a need for a clear tactical approach. As Alexander told me his first goal was to reach the 50 moves without losing (or only a few) games, either by the clock or otherwise. The second plan was to play without much risk, but solid and taking the chances to win when the opportunity is there. It sounds logical, but it is extremely difficult when you have to do 2100 moves in four hours!!

The first game demonstrated in this article shows how Georgiev applied this tactics. His opponent is Teun van Gelder. We see a calm start with solid play of Georgiev. Nothing spectacular happens, so you can play the first Applet automatically. This is about the same speed as Georgiev played! Each opponent played very much slower.

The game becomes much more interesting now. Georgiev has achieved that his position is solid, the opponent has the difficult choises. Teun van Gelder plays the agressive and also the best move (21-27). Georgiev continues with playing solid moves.

Georgiev just completed his 49th move and he had 2 seconds left on the clock for his 50th. One second for a move, the other one second for stopping his clock. He waited for Teun to move. Teun van Gelder had a few seconds more and still two moves to go. Teun saw that (21-27) and (9-14) were losing immediately and that (8-12) 28-23 (22-27) 37-32 (18-22) 23-18 was losing as well. In four seconds Teun and Alexander played (22-27) 37-32 (9-14). Both players were relieved that they survived the time check. Georgiev hurried to the next board.

So far what happened. Now the analyses. It is very wel understandable that Teun made a mistake when calculating (8-12). The variant below shows why.

- (8-12) 28-23 (21-27!!) 37-32 (15-20, 9-14, 13-19)=.

However, there is much more to say about these last seconds before the time control. First of all White can avoid the immediate draw after (8-12) 28-23 (21-27). See the next Applet. Special attention for the move (17-21!!).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W24,26,28,29,33,34,37,38,40:B8,9,13,15,17,18,21,22,25."] 1... 8-12 2. 28-23 21-27 3. 40-35 27-31 4. 38-32 31x42 5. 32-27 22x31 6. 26x48 17-21 7. 23-19 25-30 8. 19x26 30x28 9. 26-21 28-32 10. 48-42 18-22 11. 29-23 22-27 12. 23-18 27x16 13. 18-12 16-21 14. 12-7 21-26

A very surprising draw. However, Georgiev would have played differently after (8-12), probably with the same 37-32 as in the game. The next Applet is even more amazing. Each move of Black is forced! Please play it slowly!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W24,26,28,29,33,34,37,38,40:B8,9,13,15,17,18,21,22,25."] 1... 8-12 2. 37-32 9-14 3. 24-20 15x24 4. 29x9 13x4 5. 34-29 4-9 6. 40-34 9-13 7. 28-23 22-27 8. 34-30 25x34 9. 29x40 18x29 10. 33x24 12-18 11. 24-20 13-19 12. 20-15 17-22 13. 26x28 18-23 14. 32x21 23x43

Georgiev played the game extremely well, but not only that (8-12) is a draw in all variants, there was never a moment before the 49th move that the position was winning! A compliment for Teun of course. Only at the very last moment it went wrong for him.

Teun played (22-27). Georgiev won by playing 37-32! and reached the 50 moves in time. There is no doubt that 37-32 is winning in all variants. So it would be not a wise remark to say that Alexander should have taken the combination. Of course Georgiev should not have taken the combination wit 24-19. Nobody can calculate the combination and the resulting end game with only one solution in one second! How Georgiev finished the game is shown by the next Applet.

Teun speelde (22-27).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W24,26,28,29,33,34,37,38,40:B8,9,13,15,17,18,21,22,25."] 1... 22-27 2. 37-32 9-14 3. 24-20 15x24 4. 29x9 13x4 5. 34-29 4-9 6. 40-34 8-12 7. 29-24 9-13 8. 34-29 18-22

Teun van Gelder gave up, before Georgiev played the next move. Of course 29-23 wins easily. However, against a less brilliant player than Georgiev, he could have hoped for 28-23. See what could not have happened, because Georgiev does not make such a mistake after the 50th move, when he is no longer under time pressure!

Another example of a World Record game where Georgiev applies his tactics is the game against Tjipke Smedinga. In recent years Smedinga became interested in draughts composing and published a number of nice compositions. In this game he shows that he is not afraid of taking riscs, but gets first with luck not and later really into trouble.

The last move of Black (11-17) was not a lucky one. From a tactical point of view this is an interesting position. Georgiev plays very fast according to his tactics the solid 34-30. In a normal game this would be called a mistake because 48-43 prevents (3-9) by 34-29, 40 x 20, 35-30, 25-20, 28-22, 32 x 3. So Black is forced to play (15-20) with substantial advantage for White. However, Georgiev will prove that his tactics are right.
We continue till Tjipke makes his next and fatal mistake.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W25,27,28,32,33,34,35,36,37,38,39,40,42,45,48:B1,3,6,8,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,23,24,26."] 1. 34-30 3-9 2. 39-34 17-21 3. 34-29 23x34 4. 40x20 15x24 5. 45-40 18-23 6. 40-34 13-18 7. 28-22 9-13 8. 33-29 24x33 9. 38x29 6-11 10. 42-38 1-6

The fatal error was (13-18?) and (9-13?) made it even a bit worse. After (8-13) Georgiev would haven won as well, but it would have cost more time.
The game has reached its climax. The computer program Kingsrow now tells us that after 29-24 White reaches a winning position. Of course that is true, but with still 12 moves before time-check to play and 33 other games left, 29-24 is not the best move! It does not make sense reaching a winning position and losing on the clock! For 29-24 calculations have to be made such as (23-28) etc. or (11-17) 24-20 (17-22) 20 x 9 (22 x 33) and 9-3 is a draw now. Only 9-4 wins, according to the world´s best computer program. So the choice of Georgiev, the strike of genius to play 25-20!!, 38 -33, is the right one. It is also true that Kingsrow finds the best defense with (26-31!!), but also in that case Georgiev still holds the better position. It was far more likely that Tjipke would play (11-17) and after that Georgiev did not not have no problem anymore to win as the next Applet shows. At the end when the position was hopeless for Tjipke he played (25-30) instead of what is showed by the Applet. I preferred a beautiful thematic ending of this fantastic simultaneous game! Tjipke Smedinga as a draughts composer likes that as well, I hope.

Georgiev played solid, but with the goal to win. Of course he executed a number of combinations during this World Record. I only give one example. It is a forcing in what looks as a position without any danger for Black. With 45-40 Georgiev hoped that Black would like to keep the formation 7-12-18. Indeed Black played (6-11?) and then the game was over after 33-28!! Of course (15-20) is forced now and after 39-33! Siep Hamstra played (11-17) that was followed by 28-23, 37-31, 27-22, 38-32, 42 x 2. The only other move (20-24) is losing immediately as well. See the next Applet.

Georgiev lost only two games of the 42! He lost these the because of the time check, but the positions were a clear draw. Actually during all the moves of all the 42 games Georgiev was never in a lost position!! Below the Dutch text we see which minimum score was required with only two lost games. Alexander did very much better!
