A (very) long term sacrife

When I was young I was more a player than a draughts-composer. This article shows a game I played longer than 50 years ago against Jan Belien when we were both under 20 years old. Jan Belien was a talented player, the best of all the Belien brothers living in Heemstede,a suburb from Haarlem, where I lived as well at that time.

Op jeugdige leeftijd was ik meer speler dan problemist. Dit artikel laat een partij zien tussen Jan Belien en mij, langer dan 50 jaar geleden, toen wij beiden nog geen 20 jaar oud waren. Jan Belien was een getalenteerde speler, de sterkste van alle Belien broers die in Heemstede wonen, waar ik indertijd mijn ouderlijk huis had.

Both players played to win. As you will see during the first Applet we both refused to execute large exchanges and try to play as sharp as possible,during the whole game. The most interesting aspect of the game comes later on. Black sacrifices one piece intentionally and plays with a minority of one during 20 moves! Jan Belien played with White.

Wij speelden beiden om te winnen. Zoals je kunt zien gedurende het afspelen van de eerste Applet weigerden wij de mogelijke grote ruilen te nemen en probeereen wij zo scherp als mogelijk te spelen. Het meest interessante van de partij komt later. Zwart verliest opzettelijk een schijf en speelt 20 zetten lang met een stuk minder! Jan Belien had wit.

As can be expected from a game 50 years ago, it looks like an old fashioned game, but one could write a book about this opening and the many interesting variants it contains. I played (14-20!) here. A totally different game would have resulted from (7-11). See the next Applet where Black comes into trouble.

Zoals te verwachten is van een partij van 50 jaar geleden, ziet het er ouderwets uit, maar men zou een boek kunnnen schrijven over deze opening en de vele interessante varianten die mogelijk zijn. Ik speelde hier (14-20!). Een heel ander spel geeft (7-11). Zie de volgende Applet waar zwart in moeilijkheden komt.

Anyway, I did not play (7-11), but (14-20!) and the game went on as the next Applet. At the 17th move (move 8 of the Applet) Jan plays 40-34. This is very well understandable because 39-34 is not possible and all other moves are not attractive. Many years later, in 1971, Iser Koeperman followed Jan´s example and played 40-34 as well!

Hoe dan ook, ik speelde geen (7-11), maar (14-20!) en het spel verliep verder als de volgende Applet. Op de zeventiende zet (zet 8 van de Applet)speelde Jan 40-34. Dit past bij het spelen op winst want 39-34 verliest zelfs en alle andere zetten zijn niet aantrekkelijk. Vele jaren later, in 1971, volgde Iser Koeperman het voorbeeld van Jan en speelde ook 40-34!

We are now at the the first highlight of the game. 27-22 or 46-41 bring clear advantage to Black. Moreover after 39-34 white has several chances.
- 39-34 (23-29,18 x 29)27-21!! followed by 25-20 and 28-22.
- (24-30)35 x 24 (19 x 39)43 x 34 ! (15-20) 28 x 19 (13 x 24)27-22, 31 x 22 (24-30) 33-28 (30 x 39)22-18 (12 x 23) 28 x 19 (14 x 23) 25 x 5 (23-29) 5-23!! 38-33, 32 x 1.

Wij zijn nu bij het eerste hoogtepunt van de partij. 27-22 of 46-41 zijn duidelijk voordelig voor zwart. Zoals hierboven aangegeven geeft 39-34 veel winstkansen of op zijn minst voordeel.

However, I accepted losing one piece, because I saw a lot of compensation, with chances to win.
Echter, ik zag dat een stuk offeren heel veel compensatie geeft, met winstkansen.

I was now definitely one piece in minority. It will take 20 moves before the number of pieces is equalized again! During those 20 moves there is at least one exciting moment to which the next Applet leads.

Ik was nu definitief een stuk achter. Pas twintig zetten later win ik het stuk terug! Gedurende die 20 zetten is er nog minsten één spectaculair moment waarheen ons de volgende Applet voert.

Black seems to reach an end game with advantage easily now by playing (10-14). Jan was very much hoping that I would play like that! However,I saw the surprising combination in time!

Zwart lijkt nu makkelijk een voordelig eindspel te bereiken door (10-14) te spelen. Jan wachtte gespannen af in de hoop dat ik (10-14) zou doen! Ik zag echter de verrassende combinatie op tijd!

Black can play stronger after (10-14) 33-28, but there is no win in all variants. A far better idea is what I played. My (23-29!!) proved to be winning. We continue the game till the moment that the clearly winning position is reached.

Zwart kan na (10-14) 33-28 sterker spelen, maar er is geen winst in alle varianten. Een veel beter idee is wat ik speelde. Mijn (23-29!!) bleek winnend te zijn. Wij vervolgen de partij tot de duidelijk gewonnen positie is bereikt.

The pointe is now that 43-39 is followed rather surprisingly by the immediatelly winning (11-17!!, 6 x 17). Jan made it more difficult for me by playing 43-38!, but could not prevent that I reached a winning end game.

Beslissend is nu dat 43-39 nogal verrassend gevolgd wordt door het direct winnende (11-17!!, 6 x 17). Jan maakte het mij moeilijker door 43-38! te spelen, maar kon daarna niet verhinderen dat ik een winnend eindspel bereikte.

At move 35 Black sacrificed one piece, At move 56 the material is equalized, but obviously in a winning position for Black. However, Jan Belien kept on defending himself as good as possible. We continue the game till the decisive moment of the end game.

Met de vijfendertigste zet offerde zwart een stuk. Pas bij zet 56 wordt weer een gelijk aantal stukken bereikt. Maar in een duidelijk gewonnen stand voor zwart. Jan Belien verdedigde zich echter nog zo goed als mogelijk. Wij vervolgen de partij tot het beslissende moment van het eindspel.

The last hope for Jan Belien was that I played here (23-29?). In that case Jan would reach a quite surprising draw by playing 3-9!!, followed by 36-31!. Also (23-28?) would be a draw. However, I played it as the final Applet, with (27-32!) at the end leaving White without any chance. Any other field than 32 would be a draw. A more complicated way to win would have been (26-31).

Jan hoopte er nog op dat ik (23-29?) zou spelen. In dat geval zou Jan nog een remise bereiken door de verrassende zet 3-9!!, gevolgd door 36-31! Ook (23-28?) zou nog remise zijn. Maar ik speelde het zo als de laatste Applet laat zien, met (27-32!) tot slot dat wit geen enkele kans meer laat. Ieder ander veld dan 32 zou nog remise zijn. Het had ook nog wat ingewikkelder gekund door (26-31).

Thanks to the way of playing of Jan Belien this game became something special.
Later Jan was seriously hurt by a terrible accident. Jan survived, but with lasting injuries.
Thanks to his strong character he could manage the situation, is stll living and is, in his own words, 75 years young.

Dankzij de speelwijze van Jan Belien kon deze partij zich tot iets bijzonders ontwikkelen.
Later kreeg Jan een zeer ernstig ongeluk. Jan overleefde het wel, maar het had helaas blijvende gevolgen. Dankzij zijn sterke karakter kon hij er mee omgaan, leeft hij nog steeds en is nu, zoals hij zegt, 75 jaar jong. Ik ga hem opzoeken als ik weer eens in Nederland ben.

Funny position. Both White and Black win with 46/5

This article was inspired by a miniature of Evgraf Zubov, one of the greatest draughts composers. The climax is a superb 46/5 final.
De inspiratie voor dit artikel komt van een miniatuur van Evgraf Zubov, één van de allerbeste componisten van dam-problemen en eindspelen. Het hoogtepunt is een geweldig mooi 46/5 slot.

I took the liberty of extending his composition from 6 to 11 moves, resulting in a better initial position and a less obvious solution. However, the most important part of the composition is the idea of Evgraf. Black cannot reach promotion in a normal way, but sees a spectacular way of reaching a draw by a combination resulting in capturing at least three pieces of White. However, White replies with the brilliant moves 22!! and 23!!. See the first Applet.

Ik was zo vrij zijn compositie uit te breiden zodat de oplossing van 6 naar 11 zetten gaat, met een betere aanvangsstand en een wat beter verborgen oplossing. Maar het belangrijkste van de compositie is het idee van Evgraf. Zwart kan niet naar dam op een normale manier, maar ziet een spectaculaire manier om remise te maken. Zwart kan met een combinatie minstens drie wite stukken veroveren. Echter dan volgt het fantastische slot van Evgraf, met de briljante zetten 22!! en 23!!. Zie de eerste Applet.

However, the title of this article has to do with a variation of the idea. The next Applet with Black to move shows the same idea, but replaced a bit to the right side. We see the same win of White.

Echter de titel van dit artikel slaat op een variatie van het idee. De volgende Applet met zwart aan zet laat hetzelfde idee zien, maar enigszins verplaatst naar rechts. We zien dan dezelfde winst voor wit.

Of course this is not an improvement of the original idea. The reason of showing this position anyway is a very unusual one. The unique situation is that the position not only contains a 46/5 win of White, but also a 46/5 win for Black!!

De vorige Applet laat natuurlijk geen verbetering van het idee zien. De reden om dit toch te laten zien is zeer ongebruikelijk. De unieke situatie is dat de positie niet alleen een 46/5 winst van wit laat zien, maar ook een 46/5 winst van zwart!!

I do not know of any other position with two possible combinations of which one is a winning 46/5 and the other a suicide 46/5. If somebody knows another example, please inform me.

Ik ken geen andere positie met twee mogelijke combinaties waarvan de ene een 46/5 winst is en de andere een 46/5 zelfmoord. Als iemand een ander voorbeeld kent hoor ik dat graag.

Exceptional 46/5 miniatures Third and last part

The first part of three articles about exceptional 46 / 5 miniatures contains a composition where both Andreas Kuyken and I contributed parts. The second article is dedicated to a composition of Andreas. This third article presents and explains a 46 / 5 miniature made by me more than one year ago.

Het eerste van drie artikelen over uitzondelijke 46 / 5 miniaturen gaat over een compositie waar Andreas Kuyken en ik ieder voor delen ervan verantwoordelijk zijn. Het tweede deel is gewijd aan een compositie van Andreas. Dit derde artikel presenteert een 46 / 5 miniatuur die ik langer dan een jaar geleden gemaakt heb en hier wat uitgebreider toelicht.

First of all I explain the first few moves because for understanding the solution it is good to know why the first moves of the main variant are the best way to play for both colours. I give a few variants in order to come to a conclusion.

Ik begin met de eerste zetten toe te lichten omdat om de oplossing te doorgronden het goed is om te weten waarom de eerste zetten van de hoofdvariant de beste zijn voor beide kleuren. Ik geef een paar varianten die tot een conlusie leiden.

Conclusion: After (25-30) White can never play 40-35 and cannot prevent (30-34) later on. In other words the first part of the solution is:

12-7 (6-11) 7 x 16 (25-30) 16-11 (24-29) 11-7

Conclusie: Na (25-30) leidt 40-35 altijd tot remise, hetgeen betekent dat later (30-34) niet meer te verhinderen is. M.a.w. het eerste deel van de oplossing is als hierboven aangegeven.

From 11-7 on Black has four relevant ways of trying to reach a draw. The first of them is presented by the Applet below. It is not the best defence, though White needs a lot of moves to win, because White can win in several different ways. However, it is worth playing the Applet because White chooses the opportunity to reach a very spectacular final with two Black Kings!

Vanaf 11-7 heeft zwart vier relevante manieren om te trachten een remise te bereiken. De eerste daarvan laat de onderstaande Applet zien. Het is niet de beste verdediging, hoewel wit veel zetten nodig heeft om te strijd te beslissen, want wit kan op verschillende manieren winnen. Het is toch de moeite waard deze Applet te bekijken, want wit grijpt de gelegenheid om tot een spectaculair slot te komen waarbij twee zwarte dammen onschadelijk gemaakt moeten worden!

The next Applets with the other variants start with 11-7. The second attempt of Black to reach a draw does not give White much choice how to win. Special attention please for 1 x 9!!
De volgende Applets met de andere varianten beginnen met 11-7. De tweede poging van zwart om remise te bereiken geeft wit niet veel keus hoe te winnen. Extra aandacht s.v.p. voor 1 x 9!!

The third attempt by Black not only gives White only one way to win, 42-37!!, but also ends by a big stroke over 5 pieces that is quite unusual in end games. In a silly dream I executed this combination. My opponent took the piece at 41, said that I did not need it and then gave up!

De derde poging van zwart geeft niet alleen slechts één mogelijkheid aan wit om te winnen, 42-37!!, maar eindigt met een grote slag over 5 stukken wat nogal ongebruikelijk is in eindspelen. In een gekke droom voerde ik deze combinatie uit. Mijn tegenstander pakte het stuk op 41, zei dat ik het niet nodig had en gaf daarna op!

We arrive now at the main variant. It is the most logical way to play for Black, (30-34) directly. It looks easy for White, but that is not the case.

Wij komen nu bij de hoofdvariant. Het is het meest voor de hand liggende verweer van zwart, direct (30-34) spelen. Het lijkt makkelijk voor wit, maar dat is het niet.

A real surprise, it is impossible to win this variant! However, as in the previous variant White has a secret weapon: 42-37!! The last Applet gives the full solution of this remarkable miniature.

When we think of 46/5, we think of Jan Pennings. How nice would it have been if we could have shown these miniatures to him! Probably he would have made a limerick right away!

Als wij denken aan 46 / 5, denken we aan Jan Pennings. Heel graag hadden wij hem deze miniaturen laten zien! Waarschijnlijk had hij dan weer snel een limerick gemaakt!

Exceptional 46/5 miniatures Part 2 (of three)

The first part of the 46/5 exceptional miniatures articles presented a composition that was a result of cooperation between Andreas Kuyken and me. This second article is dedicated to a splendid composition of Andreas.
Het eerste deel van de uitzonderlijke 46/5 miniaturen liet een compositie zien waarvan zowel Andras Kuyken als ik delen gecomponeerd hebben. Dit tweede artikel is gewijd aan een voortreffelijke composite van Andreas.

Starting with the very satisfactory initial position it is very clear that after 30-25, Black does not have any other change than (36-41). Even that looks rather hopeless for Black, because after 25 x 3 (41-47) 42-38 (47 x 15 or 29) 22-18, 3 x 1 Black does not have any chance to survive. See the first Applet.

Vanaf de aanvangsstand is het heel duidelijk dat na 30 -25 zwart niets beters heeft dan (36-41). Zelfs dat ziet er nogal hopeloos uit voor zwart,want na 25 x 3 (41-47) 42-38 (47 x 15 or 29) 22-18, 3 x 1 heeft zwart geen schijn van kans meer. Zie de eerste Applet.

It is also clear that so far there is nothing that deserves the classification excellent. However, the real surprises are still to come! Black has a very remarkable, brilliantly found, defense by playing (12-17!!) and (41-47!).

Het is ook duidelijk dat er tot nu toe niets is dat de kwalificatie uitzondelijk goed verdient. Maar de echte verrassingen moeten dan ook nog komen! Zwart heeft een zeer opmerkelijke en briljant gevonden verdediging door (12-17!!) en (41-47!).

This the highlight of the composition. It is 6 to 1. White has only two ways to keep 4 pieces of which 3-9 ( 47 x 3) is without any doubt a draw. This means that White has to play 13-8. The difference is that after (47 x 2) White is winning by 28-22 (2-16) 22-17, 37-32. However, Black has a better one : (47 x 16!). The climax is shown by the next Applet containing the full main variant.

Wij zijn nu bij het hoogtepunt van de compositie. Het staat 6 tegen 1. Wit kan slechts op twee manieren 4 stukken behouden. Daarvan is 3-9 (47 x 3) zonder twijfel remise. Dat betekent dat wit 13-8 spelen moet. Het verschil is dat na (47 x 2) wit wint door 28-22 (2-16) 22-17, 37-32. Maar zwart heeft wat beters: (47 x 16!). De climax geeft de volgende Applet, die de volledige hoofdvariant laat zien.

As encore I present a miniature of Jan van Tol. His name is a guarantee for something special. This miniature is not of the Champions League level as the main miniatures of the three articles. But also this one of Jan van Tol contains a very special moment.

Exceptional 46/5 miniatures Part 1 (of three).

This article is the first of three, each of them with only one 46/5 miniature. All three have exceptional solutions, a lot of suprises, actions and counter actions, as well as a climax at the end. The main phases of the first of the three miniatures are first shown in this article by four diagrams, followed by Applets with the solution. The composition is the result of a rather peculiar cooperation between Andreas Kuyken and me. My part starts at the initial position and goes on till the second diagram. From there the solution continuous with a very interesting trip by the White King composed by Andreas, till the moment of the third diagram where two White Kings come into action. I found an original way of reaching the classic final by two unusual moves.

Dit artikel is het eerste van drie, elke daarvan met slechts één 46/5 miniatuur. Alle drie hebben buitengewone oplossingen, zijn vol met verrassingen, actie en tegenactie, hebben tevens een overtuigend slot. De belangrijkste momenten van de eerste van de drie miniaturen worden in dit artikel getoond met vier diagrammen, gevolgd door Applets met de oplossing. De compositie is het resultaat van een nogal ongebruikelijke wijze van samenwerking door Andreas Kuyken en mij. Mijn deel start met de aanvangsstand en gaat verder totdat het tweede diagram is bereikt. Daarna gaat de oplossing verder met een prachtige reis van de witte dam gecomponeerd door Andreas Kuyken, totdat vanaf het derde diagam twee witte dammen in actie komen. Dit toont een door mij meermalen bewerkt eindspel waar ik een originele manier, met twee ongebruikelijk zetten, gevonden heb om tot het klassieke slot te komen.

Obviously the solution must start with trying to go from the initial position to the second diagram. This seems to be very easy by playing the next moves: 38-32 (37 x 28) 45-40 (39-43) 44-39! (43 x 45) 12-8 (28 x 39) 8-2! and the winning position of the second diagram is reached. However, Black has another variant available. This one is shown by the first Applet. Special attention please for the forced moves (22-27!!), (32-37!) and (27-31!). At the end after (37-42) White cannot win by 36-27, because 44 is not on 39!

De oplossing moet natuurlijk beginnen met te proberen van de aanvangsstand te komen tot de winnende stand van het tweede diagram. Dat lijkt heel eenvoudig door de bovenstaande zetten te spelen. Echter zwart kan op 45-40 nog anders reageren. Zie de eerste Applet. Let speciaal op de gedwongen zetten (22-27!!), (32-37!) en (27-31!). Aan het eind na (37-42) kan wit niet winnen door 36-27, omdat 44 niet op 39 staat!

White can also play differently after 45-40 (28-32), but there is no way to win. The next Applet shows the right moves of the first part of the solution. White reaches almost the same position as of diagram 2 by playing the very unusual moves 8-3! and back again with 3 to 8!!. The moves are not interchangeable, after (43 x 34) White should not play 45-40 because (28x39) 34 x 21 is a draw.
Wit kan ook anders spelen na 45-40 (28-32), maar zwart kan zich altijd redden. De volgende Applet laat de juiste zetten zien van het eerste deel van de oplossing. Wit bereikt vrijwel dezelfde positie van diagram 2 door de zeer ongebruikelijke zetten 8-3! en weer terug van 3 naar 8!! De zetten zijn niet verwisselbaar, na (43 x34) kan wit niet winnen door 45-40 (28 x 39) 34 x 21 =.

White has reached the winning position similar as the second diagram above (A. Kuyken). The big surprise now is that after (19-24!) White has to take 8 x 48!! instead of 8 x 43. The explanation is that after 8 x 43? the opposition is against White. For instance (23-29) 43-38 (29-34) 38-43 (34-40) 43-49 (22-28) 49 x 35 (28-32) 35-24 (32-37) 24-47 (1-6 of 7)=. After 8 x 48!! the opposition is in favor of White after (23-29) or (23-28). So Black is forced to play (22-27) and the solution goes on as in the next and final Applet. This last one gives the full solution of the miniature, with the two composers relieving each other.

Wit heeft de winnende positie bereikt vrijwel zo als die van het tweede diagram (A.Kuyken). De grote verrassing is nu dat na (19-24!) wit naar 48 moet slaan en niet zoals voor de hand ligt naar 43. De verklaring daarvoor is dat na 8 x 43? het tempo tegen zit voor wit. Bijvoorbeeld (23-29) 43-38 (29-34) 38-43 (34-40) 43-49 (22-28) 49 x 35 (28-32) 35-24 (32-37) 24-47 (1-6 of 7)=. Na 8 x 48!! is de oppositie na (23-29) of (23-28) ten gunste van wit. Zwart is daarom gedwongen (22-27) te spelen en de oplossing gaat dan verder als in de volgende Applet. Deze geeft de volledige oplossing van deze miniatuur, waarbij de auteurs zich afwisselen.

The next two articles will also contain one exceptional 46/5 miniature each. Both are at least as spectacular as the one of this article.

De volgende twee artikelen zijn ieder ook aan een buitengewone 46/5 miniatuur gewijd. Beide zijn minstens zo spectaculair als die van dit artikel.

A Classic 46/5 Idea

Gerrit de Bruijn informed me that informed me that the beautiful 46/5 idea, the final of the end games shown in this article, was published as early as 1787 in the second book of Manoury. According to Dufour the author of this position is Chalon. It contains two fully thematical variants and a third one with a thematical final. By the way, I have my doubts that anybody at that period of history found the number of thematical variants so important as many endgame composers do today.

Gerrit de Bruijn wist mij te melden dat het  het mooie 46/5 idee, dat bij de eindspelen in dit artikel het slot is, al gepubliceerd werd in het tweede boek van Manoury in 1787. Volgens Dufour is de auteur van deze stand Chalon. Deze stand bevat twee volkomen scherpe varianten en een derde variant met een scherpe slotstand. Ik heb mijn twijfels overigens of er in die periode van de geschiedenis iemand was die het aantal thematische varianten zo belangrijk vond als vele hedendaagse eindspel componisten.

The first end game shown below was composed by the well known end game composer K.W.Kruijswijk . The nice initial positon has a straightforward solution leading to the position of Chalon.  Gerrit de Bruijn arranged (saved) the composition by moving the piece originally on 41 to 32.

Het eerste eindspel hieronder werd gecomponeerd door de bekende eindspel componist K.W. Kruijswijk. De  nette aanvangsstand heeft een rechtlijnige oplossing die naar het slot van Chalon voert. Gerrit de Bruijn heeft aangegeven waarom het stuk dat bij Kruijswijk op 41 stond naar 32 verhuizen moet.

The next diagram shows a Black King that cannot move very much because it is blocked by its own Black pieces. Even when he gets more space later, the Black on 5 is still in the way of the Black King.

Het volgende diagram laat een zwarte dam zien die zich nauwelijks bewegen kan omdat hij geblokkeerd wordt door zijn eigen zwarte stukken . Zelfs als hij later meer ruimte krijgt, staat de zwarte op 5 hem nog in de weg.

We continue with a variation of the final of Chalon. The endgame contains only a few pieces and a thematic variant with a very different final as 46/5. Added to that we see a surprising false solution, with which we start.

Wij gaan verder met een variatie op het slot van Chalon. Ondanks weinig stukkken bevat het eindspel een tweede scherpe variant met een heel ander slot dan 46/5. Bovendien nog een verrassende schijnoplossing waarmee wij beginnen.

46/5 End Games

This article is the first part of a demonstration of end games resulting in one of the most beautiful final positions of draughts called 46/5. A large collection of thousands of compositions was collected by J.A. Pennings, who contributed a number of very nice 46/5 (and 5/46) compositions himself.
By far most of the collection are direct combinations resulting in 46/5, but there are quite a number of end-games too.
Below we start with an end game based upon an idea of Pennings as old as 1942. A few years later a cooperation between Scheijen and Duursma brought an extension of the idea. This end game is shown by the first Applet, with the moves 34-29, 29-24 as the highlight.

Dit artikel is het eerste deel van een demonstratie van eindspelen die eindigen met een van de mooiste slotstanden van het damspel, 46/5. Een grote verzameling van duizenden composities is samengesteld door J.A.Pennings, die zelf een aantal heel mooie 46/5 (en 5/46) problemen componeerde.
Verreweg de meeste van de collectie zijn directe combinaties die in 46/5 eindigen, maar er zijn ook nogal wat eindspelen.
Hieronder beginnen wij met een eindspel gebaseerd op een idee van Pennings dat hij reeds in 1942 publiceerde. The next composition shows another interpretation of the idea, a bit more subtle with the move 3-12! the only one winning because it prevents (13-18). De volgende compositie laat een andere interpretatie van het idee zien, nog iets subtieler. De zet 3-12! is de enige die wint omdat (13-18)
 verhinderd moet worden.

  The application of the idea is matured in the next composition that I published 60 years later than 1942! The most peculiar thing of this composition is that in the initial position all the fields of the line 46 to 5 are occupied!!. The end game contains another thematic variant found by Romanov: After 3 (22) 21 (36) 32 (10, 27) 37 (41) 31, 37. De toepassing van het idee is volwassen geworden met de volgende compositie die ik publiceerde 60 jaar later dan 1942! Het meest opmerkelijke van deze compositie is dat in de aanvangsstand alle velden van de lijn 46 tot en met 5 bezet zijn . Het eindspel bevat nog een tweede thematische variant, gevonden door Romanov. Zie boven.

Not only that all the fields of the line 46 to 5 were occupied, finally the two remaining are White at 46 and Black at 5, before they are converted to a Black King on 46 and a White King on 5! Niet alleen dat alle velden van de lange lijn bezet waren, aan het eind blijven alleen een witte op 46 en een zwarte op 5, voordat ze worden omgetoverd tot een zwarte dam op 46 en een witte dam op 5! The next 46/5 end game is totally different. The most interesting moment is after (24-29) 12-7 where (29-33) 44-39 is an easy win for White. However, Black plays (13-19!) with the surprising effect that only 46- 41! wins. Het volgende 46/5 eindspelletje verloopt totaal anders. Het meest interessante moment komt na (24-29) 12-7 waar (29-33) 44-39 gemakkelijk wint voor wit. Echter, zwart speelt (13-19!) met als verrassend effect dat alleen 46- 41! wint.

 L. Schut was one of the best known Dutch end game composers in the middle of the 20th century. He was inspired by the beautiful 46/5 idea of A. Sjosjin.

  Based upon a brilliant and funny final by C.Kusters I present here a rather peculiar end game where Black tries to escape with sacrificing most of his pieces. Kusters version of the final was with the White King on 35, but that is very difficult to extent to an end game.
Try to find the solution yourself!

Gebaseerd op een prachtig gevonden en grappige finale van C. Kusters laat ik hier een eindspelletje zien waarin Zwart probeert te ontsnappen door de meeste van zijn stukken te offeren. In de versie van Kusters staat de witte dam op 35, maar dan is het heel moeilijk er een uitbreiding aan te geven.
Probeer zelf de oplossing te vinden!
