Computer Draughts Championship 2013

Leo Nagels and I are organizing (official) computer draughts tournaments over 25 years now. The strength, functionality, user-friendliness, etc. of the computer-programs improved steadily over the years. In particular, but not only, after the introduction and further expanding of end game data bases. Kingsrow took the lead in generating very large end game data bases. With strong multi-processor computers, calculating 24 hours a day, it takes many month to complete data bases of the current size.
The very convincing winner of the Championship 2013, held on December 15 in Culemborg, is the program Dragon (of Michel Grimminck, the Netherlands). The program is using an eight-piece (Man and Kings) end game data base, but this is not the only reason why this program is so strong. The game below shows the high level of the program.

De sterkte, functionaliteit en gebruikers-vriendelijkheid van de computer-programma´s heeft zich in de loop der jaren voortdurend verbeterd. In het bijzonder, maar niet alleen, na de introductie en verdere ontwikkeling van eindspel data bases. Kingrow nam de leiding wat betreft het genereren van grote eindspel data bases. Met krachtige multi-processor computers, 24 uur per dag vol in bedrijf, kost het maanden om data bases van de huidige grootte samen te stellen.
De zeer overtuigende winnaar van het Kampioenschap 2013, gehouden 15 december 2013 in Culemborg, is het programma Dragon (van Michel Grimminck, Nederland). Dit programma gebruikt een acht-stukken data base (stukken en dammen), maar dat is niet de enige reden waarom dit programma zo sterk is. De partij hieronder laat het hoge niveau van het programma zien.

In the initial position of the first Applet the program TD King (of Ton Tillemans, Switserland) had the move. TD King is a strong program, always in the upper part of the list of a competition. Here TD King played 36-31? instead of 48-43, followed by the dull 37-31. It was his only mistake of the game. After that TD King played the best moves possible, but Dragon did not make any mistake at all during the game! Many of its moves, starting with (20-25!!) were the only one to win. A perfect game, not only by using the Coup Royal threat in an optimal way, but in particular how Dragon wins this game in a classical position. This win is worth studying by all draughts players! Please notice that the 8 piece data base (here 4 against 4) is still out of reach, 50 ply away! That is 25 moves.

In de aanvangsstand van de eerste Applet was het programma TD King (van Ton Tillemans, Zwitserland) aan zet. TD King is een sterk programma, steeds te vinden hoog in de ranglijst van een wedstrijd. Hier speelde TD king 36-31? i.p.v. te hakken met 48-43, gevolgd door 37-31. Het was de enige fout van de partij. Daarna speelde TD King steeds de beste verdediging, maar Dragon maakte geen enkele fout! Veel van zijn zetten, als eerste (20-25!!) waren de enige die winnen. Een perfecte partij, niet alleen vanwege het optimaal gebruik van de Coup Royal dreiging, maar vooral hoe Dragon deze klassieke partij wint. Deze winst is het waard door alle dammers bestudeerd te worden! Men realisere zich dat de 8 stukken data base (hier 4 tegen 4) nog buiten bereik is, nog 50 ply weg! Dat is 25 zetten.

It is of course clear that White had to play 28-22, because of the Coup Royal threats. Also that White had to play the sacrifice 22-17. In particular while it seems that White can survive, as the next Applet shows.
Het is natuurlijk duidelijk dat wit 28-22 moest spelen vanwege de Coup Royal dreigingen. Evenzo dat wit moest offeren met 22-17. In het bijzonder omdat het lijkt dat wit kan overleven, zoals de volgende Applet laat zien.

However, Black has a superb solution. Many moves are the only way to win! See the list below.

Echter, Zwart heeft een indrukwekkende oplossing. Bij veel zetten is er maar één die wint! Zie bovenstaande opsomming.

Maybe readers might remark that White could prevent the Coup Royal threat even after playing 36-31. This is true, White could play 48-42, but look what Dragon would have played in that case.
Wellicht zullen enige lezers opmerken dat Wit ook na 36-31 de Coup Royal dreiging nog kan opheffen. Dit is waar, wit kan 48-42 spelen, maar zie wat Dragon dan had gespeeld.

Turbo Dambase Draughts Compositions

By far the best collection of draughts compositions available via Internet is the one of Turbo Dambase. Based upon the collection built during many many years by Wim de Zwart it gives a wealth of information. The data base contains currently more than 150.000 compostions and will grow steadily. This very large number implies that there is a wide range of quality, from the all time best to the unsuccessful. This makes the collection not only independent of individual taste, but also helps preventing that the unsuccessful or low quality compositions are published again. Of course it is a very good tool for draughts-composers to see if his idea was found earler by somebody else.
The strong feature of the Turbo Dambase (by Klaas Bor) collection is the search option that enables making selections not only by author or initial positions of the compositions, but by every position during the solution of each composition, even with either Black or White to move!! This feature was applied for preparing this article.

Veruit de beste verzameling van dam-composities beschikbaar via Internet is die van Turbo Dambase. Gebaseerd op de verzameling van Wim de Zwart, die hij gedurende vele jaren heeft opgebouwd, geeft het een weelde aan informatie. De data base bevat thans meer dan 150.000 composities en zal voortdurend groeien. Dit enorme aantal houdt in dat er een heel grote variatie is in kwaliteit, van de beste ter wereld ooit tot de mislukte. Dat maakt de collectie niet alleen onafhankelijk van persoonlijke smaak, maar helpt ook te verhinderen dat de mislukte of die van slechte kwaliteit nog eens gepubliceerd worden. Natuurlijk is het een heel goed hulpmiddel voor dam-componisten om te zien of zijn idee al eerder door een ander bedacht is.
Het sterke punt van de Turbo Dambase (van Klaas Bor) verzameling is de zoek-mogelijkheid die in staat stelt te selecteren op niet alleen auteursnaam of beginstand van de composities, maar op iedere positie gedurende de oplossing van iedere compositie, zelfs met hetzij zwart hetzij wit aan zet!!. Deze selectie-mogelijkheid heb ik toegepast voor dit artikel.

We start with an immortal composition by C. van der Sommen published in 1946. With the help of Turbo Dambase we can see what other compositons have been made resulting in the same final position by a number of other composers. However, most of them are clearly not as perfect as this one of v.d. Sommen. His initial position is ideal, also because the last move of Black is well understandable,(27-32) instead of (27-31) would be followed by 37-31, 33-28, 45-40. The solution is nice and pure.

Wij beginnen met een onsterfelijke compositie van C. v.d. Sommen gepubliceerd in 1946. Met hulp van Turbo Dambase kunnen we zien welke andere composites gemaakt zijn op hetzelfde slot door een aantal andere componisten. Echter, de meeste daarvan zijn duidelijk niet zo volmaakt als deze van v.d. Sommen. Bij hem is de beginstand ideaal, ook omdat (27-32) i.p.v. (27.31) gevolgd zou zijn door 37-31, 33-28, 45-40. De oplossing is mooi en zuiver.

While the one of v.d. Sommen is the best on this particular final I investigated other, but similar positions. For instance the same final, but with the whole pyramid moved to the left. Again Turbo Dabase contains a number of them. I selected a nice one, with an additional effect. The final contains two Black Kings!

Omdat die van v.d. Sommen de beste is op deze bepaalde opsluiting onderzocht ik andere, vergelijkbare posities. Bijvoorbeeld hetzelfde slot, maar met de hele piramide verplaatst naar links. In Turbo Dambase zijn er een aantal te vinden. Ik selecteerde een mooie, met een extra effect. Hier worden twee zwarte dammen opgesloten!

Another idea, difficult to realize at first glance, is the same pyramide with a Man on 36 instead of a King. Via Turbo Dambase I foud a nice one, though I had to arrange it because the original contains a second solution at the end of the composition!

Een ander idee, dat moeilijk te realiseren lijkt, is dezelfde piramide, maar dan met een witte schijf op 36 i.p.v. een Dam. Via Turbo Dambase vond ik een mooie, maar ik moest de aanvangsstand en de voor-laatste zetten wel wat veranderen omdat het eind van de oplossing een simpele BO bevatte!

The initial postion is unsatisfactory, but the effect is great, in particular the moves 35-30, 3-20!!
De aanvangsstand is onbevredigend, maar het effect is fantastisch, in het bijzonder de zetten 35-30, 3-20!!

The next also contains two Black Kings at the end, but now they cannot move at all. The first move explains the initial position. Please pay attention to what happens after 50-44.

De volgende eindigt ook met twee zwarte dammen, maar nu kunnen beide geen zet meer doen. De eerst zet verklaart de aanvangsstand. Let op de hangende schijf na 50-44.

The question, after the compositions above, remains if it is not possible to reach such spectacular effects with a far better intitial position. The answwer was given by Evgraf Zubov with the splendid composition shown by the next Applet.

De vraag blijft, na de bovenstaande composities, of het mogelijk is zulke spectaculaire effecten te realiseren met een veel betere aanvangsstand. Het antwoord gaf Evgraf Zubov met de formidabele compositie die met de volgende Applet te zien is.

Could it be done bettter? It is always a matter of taste, but the next one is impressive anyway. Also in Turbo Dambase we can find that the basic idea of the end game was found much earlier by A.J. Beemer. However, this composition of Frans Hermelink is far superior. Notice the fact that even after (12-17) White is forced to let his King be caught. After 1-18? Black has a narrow escape. Stop a moment at that point when playing the solution and enjoy.

Kan het nog beter? Dat is altijd een kwestie van smaak, maar de volgende is in ieder geval indrukwekkend. Wederom helpt Turbo Dambase om te vinden dat het basis-idee van het eindspel veel vroeger gevonden is en wel door A.J.Beemer. Echter, de compositie van Frans Hermelink is veruit superieur. Een prachtig detail is dat wit zelfs na (12-17) gedwongen is zijn Dam te laten vangen. Na 1-18? kan zwart nog net ontsnappen. Stop op dit punt even bij het naspelen van de oplossing, om ontspannen te genieten.

At the end of this article a totally other idea, but related to the finals above. Here is the so called "opsluiting" in Dutch, not the final of the solution, but only a means for reaching another thematic final. Please stop at and have a look at the position after 23 x 3. Black cannot play (41-46) because of 42-37! Black is forced to play (24-29). White cannot win by 15-10, but only by a real surprise.

Tot slot van dit artikel een totaal ander idee, maar wel gerelateerd aan de slotstanden hierboven. In dit geval is de opsluiting niet het slot van de ontleding, maar slechts een middel om een veel op andere wijze bewerkt scherp slot te bereiken. Blijf even stilstaan bij de positie na 23 x 3. Zwart kan geen (41-46) spelen vanwege 42-37! Zwart is gedwongen (24-29) te spelen. Wit kan dan niet winnen met 15-10, maar heeft een echte verrassing in petto.

With a bit of practice anyone can find what he wants out of a very large collection of draugths compositions. You can have a quick look when you are in the mood for a nice composition, or take your time and study whatever you like.
For those who have Turbo Dambase for games already on their computer, the additonal price for the composition data base is only Euro 49. This is very cheap, with 150.000 compositions it is only 1 Euro for more than 3000 compositions! More important, it is an inexhaustible source for draughts lovers. The White King and his sons

As explained earlier a Laocoon of draughts has nothing to do with Laocoon, the Trojan Priest, who was killed together with his two sons by giant snakes. In a draughts Laocoon position the King is the winner, the only survivor, is not a Priest and does not have two sons. In order to come a bit closer to the Greek and Roman stories, I added two sons to a Laocoon position. In accordance to the stories the two sons do not survive, though there is not any snake involved.
The result is remarkable, because the effect is totally different as with a pure Laocoon. The main thing here is that the White King has a difficult choice how to capture. The composition has more to offer. Please notice that White should not choose 16-11 too soon, because 12-8, 25-20 (15 x 24) 16-11, 39-33, 43 x 23 (19 x 28!!) is a draw.

Zoals eerder toegelicht heeft een dam-Laocoon niets gemeen met Laocoon, de Trojaanse Priester, die samen met zijn twee zonen gedood werd door reuze slangen. In een dam-Laocoon positie is de Dam de winnaar, de enige overlevende, is geen Priester en twee zonen heeft hij (zij) ook niet. Om toch een beetje meer in de buurt te komen van de Griekse en Romeinse verhalen, heb ik twee zonen toegevoegd aan een Laocoon positie. Zoals in de verhalen overleven de twee zonen het niet, hoewel er zelfs in de verte geen slang te zien is.
Het resultaat is opmerkelijk, omdat het effect heel anders is als bij een zuivere Laocoon. Hier gaat het vooral om de moeilijke keus voor de Witte dam hoe te slaan. De compositie heeft nog wat meer te bieden. Aan te bevelen is erop te letten dat wit niet te vroeg 16-11 spelen mag, want 12-8, 25-20 (15 x 24) 16-11, 39-33, 43 x 23 (19 x 28!!) is remise.

Black does not make it easy for White. The King has to choose between 11 different ways to capture four Blacks!
Zwart maakt het wit moeilijk. De Dam moet kiezen tussen 11 verschillende manieren om vier stukken te slaan!
3 x 35, 3 x 31, 3 x 30, 3 x 12, 3 x 11, 3 x 9, 3 x 8, 3 x 6, 3 x 4 en 3 x 3 in twee richtingen.

The right way to capture seems to be 3 x 11. De goede manier om te slaan lijkt 3 x 11.

So far something else than a pure Laocoon. However, there is room left for a real one. The author of the Laocoon position is H. Cordier the French draughts composer and also the father of A. Cordier, the draughts Champion of France. Indeed, the same as the Laocoon World Record holder with a King against 10 Blacks! I published a complicated composition on the Laocoon of H. Cordier a few years before. The new one is at least as good with a surprising forcing. This recent composition is dedicated to H. Cordier and his talented son.

Tot zover iets anders dan een zuivere Laocoon. Er is echter nog plaats voor een echte. De auteur van de Laocoon positie is H. Cordier de dam-componist uit Frankrijk en tevens de vader van A. Cordier, de damkampioen van Frankrijk. Inderdaad, dezelfde als de Laocoon Wereldrecord houder met een dam tegen 10 zwarte stukken! Enige jaren geleden heb ik een gecompliceerde compositie gepubliceerd op de Laocoon positie van H. Cordier. De nieuwe is minstens zo goed met een verrassende forcing. Deze recente compositie draag ik op aan H. Cordier en zijn getalenteerde zoon.

The initial position of the new composition seems to be impossible. However, I do not need to give a long explanation, because we have Applets today. Applets are a perfect way to prove that an initial position is legitimate. So I give the proof first. When the Applet is finished, the initial position of the composition is reached.

De aanvangsstand van de nieuwe compositie lijkt onmogelijk. Echter, een uitgebreide verklaring hoeft niet, want wij hebben Applets vandaag de dag. Applets zijn zeer geschikt om te bewijzen dat de aanvangsstand legaal is. Zodoende geef ik eerst het bewijs. Als de Applet is afgespeeld staat de aanvangsstand van de compositie op het bord.

The Best is a matter of taste. Moreover a Laocoon composition consists of an initial position, a combination and the Laocoon position. Each part can be appreciated differently. However, one can define a number of quality aspects in order to make a selection out of the large number of published Laocoons. In this article I apply a number of rather tough criteria, which reduces the candidates to be among the best substantially. Obviously the minimum requirements for all draughts compositions apply in the first place. The additional criteria to be amomg the best, as a minimum requirement, I have chosen are:

- The initial position should not contain a King, no White on the line 6-10 and no minority of more than one White.
- The combination should at least have one economical majority capture or a variant during the combination.
- The Laocoon position should at least have 4 thematic variants.
There are always exceptions to rules. In this case of course the World Record compositions of my previous article!

Wat de besten zijn is een kwestie van smaak. Bovendien bestaat een Laocoon compositie uit een aanvangsstand, een combinatie en de Laocoon positie. De delen kunnen verschillend beoordeeld worden. Men kan echter een aantal kwaliteits-aspecten benoemen om een selectie te maken uit de vele gepubliceerde Laocoons. In dit artikel pas ik nogal zware criteria toe, waardoor het aantal candidaten om tot de besten gerekend te worden drastisch wordt gereduceerd. Natuurlijk gelden de gewone criteria die van toepassing zijn voor alle dam-composities. Om tot de beste worden gerekend, heb ik daar een aantal minimum-eisen aan toegevoegd. Deze zijn:

- Geen Dam in de aanvangsstand, geen wit stuk op de lijn 6-10 en niet meer dan één wit stuk minder in de aanvangsstand.
- De combinatie moet minstens één economische meerslag kennen, of een variant gedurende de combinatie.
- De Laocoon position moet minstens 4 thematische varianten bevatten.
Er zijn altijd uitzonderingen op een regel. In dit geval natuurlijk de Wereldrecord composities van mijn vorige artikel!

In order to illustrate how tough these minimum requirements are I show you first a composition which is quite good, when applying less strict criteria.

Om te laten zien hoe hoog de lat wordt gelegd bij deze minimum eisen laat ik eerst een compositie zien, die op zich heel goed is, als de eisen minder hoog gesteld worden.

I have done my best to reach more than the minimum of four thematic variants, but the Laocoon does not meet the criterium of a minimum of seven Blacks. With only six and one of those at the border it is relatively easy to add a combination to the Laocoon. So this good composition cannot compete with the best, according to my tough criteria.

Ik heb mijn best gedaan om meer dan het minimum van vier scherpe varianten te bereiken, maar de Laocoon voldoet niet aan het criterium van minstens zeven zwarte stukken. Met slechts zes en daarvan één aan de rand is het relatief eenvoudig om een combinatie aan de Laocoon toe te voegen. Daarom kan deze goede compositie niet wedijveren met de besten, volgens mijn stricte criteria.

The next one is, like A. Nikolaev, also from a specialist in the field of Laocoons, Alexander Moisejev. This composition meets the criteria.
De volgende is, zoals A. Nikolaev, ook van een specialist op het gebied van Laocoons, Alexander Moisejev. Deze compositie voldoet aan de criteria.

The initial position and the combination are fine, but the Laocoon is not impressive. The captures of the King are interesting, not too easy, but four of the five variants are in fact the same.
De aanvangsstand en de combinatie zijn mooi, maar de Laocoon is niet indrukwekkend. De damslagen zijn interessant, niet te eenvoudig, maar vier van de vijf varianten zijn in feite hetzelfde.

The second one of A.Nikolaev is a very good composition as well, now the criteria are fully met.
De tweede van A. Nikolaev is ook een heel goed Laocoon probleem, nu wordt volledig aan de criteria voldaan.

Besides the minority of White in the initial position, a perfect composition, but only four thematic variants is not impressive.
Wit heeft een stuk minder in de aanvangsstand, maar verder is het een perfecte compositie. Maar met slechts vier scherpe varianten.

An International Contest draughts composition was organized by Het Damspel in 1988 /1989. It was a free style-contest resulting in 107 participating competitions. The results of all the compostions with the names of the participants were published in Het Damspel of September 1989. A number of names were not properly spelled. The 18 best compositions according to the jury were published at the same time as the results. A very good Laocoon was one of them, with as name of the author H. Nikolajev. Because not any other composition with this name is known and because of the Laocoon position involved we suppose that it was A. Nikolaev again.

Het Damspel organiseerde in 1988 / 1989 een Internationale Wedstrijd voor problemisten. Het was een vrije wedstrijd wat tot gevolg had dat er 107 composities werden ingezonden. De resultaten van alle problemen met de namen van de deelnemers werden gepubliceerd in Het Damspel van september 1989. Een aantal namen waren niet juist gespeld. De 18 beste composities volgens de jury werden in hetzelfde nummer van HD gepubliceerd. Daaronder bevond zich een heel goede Laocoon, met als naam van de auteur H. Nikolajev. Omdat geen enkel ander probleem onder deze naam bekend is en gelet op de betreffende Laocoon positie gaan we er van uit dat het wederom A. Nikolaev was.

Again we see a minority of White in the initial position, but neverheless this Laocoon composition is extremely good. The construction seems so easy and obvious, but it is a miracle that a Laocoon with 8 Blacks is realized with so many Blacks and Whites in a beautiful initial position.
The contribution of A. Nikolaev to Laocoon positions and compositions deserves the highest respect. Taking that into account, it is suprising that he did not find the much better versions of this Laocoon position, the one without the Black on 9 and the other one with 11 on 7. In particular surprising, because another of his compositions, that I showed earler, fits with one of these other versions of the Laocoon position. I explained that in the first Laocoon article on my Blog.
The one with 11 on 7 has by far the most and the best variants of all the Laocoon positions ever published.

De bijdrage van A. Nikolaev aan Laocoon posities en composities verdient het hoogste respect. Met deze kwaliteiten is het verwonderlijk dat hij de veel betere versies van deze Laocoon positie niet gevonden heeft, die zonder het stuk op 9 en de andere met 11 op 7. Het is in het bijzonder verrassend, omdat een andere compositie van hem, die ik eerder liet zien, ook mogelijk is met een van de betere versies van de Laocoon positie.
Die met 11 op 7 heeft veruit de meeste en de beste varianten van al de Laocoon positions ooit gepubliceerd.

We close the Laocoon articles with a rather crazy record, a Laocoon where White makes a draw with one King against 12 Blacks! The author is Gérard Taille who also contributed to the real World Record composition.

Summarizing my Laocoon articles, the best Laocoon positions and compositions are in the first article. The most important contributions to the development of Laocoons is given by A. Nikolaev and later by Alexander Moisejev, who is still developping interesting new ones. And of course we have the World Record of Arnaud Cordier, the Champion of France, that you can try to beat.

Mijn Laocoon artikelen samenvattend, de beste Laocoon posities en composities zijn te vinden in mijn eerste artikel. De belanrijkste bijdragen aan de ontwikkeling van Laocoons komen van A. Nikolaev en later van Alexander Moisejev, die nog steeds interessante nieuwe maakt. World Record Laocoon

The most remarkable reaction on my previous article, the Best Multi-variant Laocoons, came from Gérard Taille. Gérard participated several times, with his program Damy, at international computer-draughts tournaments, organized by Leo Nagels and myself. At each of these tournaments some of the world´s best draughts-programs participated and Damy is one of those. Although his program Damy was successful, Gérard is preparing a fully new one now, that is supposed to be ready in 2014.
Anyway, what Gérard told me and the readers of my Blog, was that Arnaud Cordier, also from France as many of you will know, developped a Laocoon with ten Blacks!! It is a sensation, in particular for those who have a lot of knowledge of and experience with Laocoon positions, like Alexander Moisejev. It is actually a World Record! Maybe it is possible to create/find another Laocoon winning against ten Blacks, but currently it is the only one. Already a lot is effort is put on finding another one, but without success. See the first diagram, for the World Record.

De meest opmerkelijke reactie op mijn vorige artikel, th Best Multi-variant Laocoons, kwam van Gérard Taille. Gérard nam verschillende malen deel, met zijn programma Damy, aan internationale computer-dam-toernooien, georganiseerd door Leo Nagels en schrijver dezes. Aan elk van deze toernooien deden een aantal van de beste dam-programma´s ter wereld mee en Damy is er één van. Hoewel zijn programma succes had, maakt Gérard een geheel nieuw programma, volgens plan moet het in 2014 gereed komen.
Hoe dan ook, wat Gérard mij en de lezers van mijn Blog mededeelde, was dat Arnaud Cordier, ook een Fransman zoals velen van jullie zullen weten, een Laocoon heeft ontwikkeld met tien zwarte stukken!! Het is een sensatie, in het bijzonder voor degenen die veel kennis hebben van en ervaring met Laocoon posities, zoals Alexander Moisejev. Het is zowaar een Wereld Record! Het is denkbaar dat nog een andere winnende Laocoon gevonden wordt met tien zwarte stukken, maar tot nu toe is het de enige. Er is al veel moeite gedaan een andere te vinden, maar zonder succes. Zie het eerst diagram voor het Wereld Record.

It is amazing that all the 19 possible replies are losing! However, of all these variants only two have a thematic solution. These two are:
(10-15) 2 x 3 (15-20) 3 x 25.
(19-24) 2 x 29
All the 17 other variants have either more than one way to capture or far from sharp finals. It remains a fantastic position, but so few sharp variants is a bit disappointing. One more reason for trying to find another Laocoon with 10 Blacks.

Het is geweldig dat al de 19 mogelijke antwoorden van zwart verliezen! Echter, van al deze varianten zijn er slechts twee scherp. Zie boven. Bij al de 17 andere varianten kan wit op verschillende manieren slaan of blijft er een finale over die helemaal niet scherp is. Het blijft een fantastische positie, maar zo weinig scherpe varianten is wat teleurstellend. Een extra reden om te proberen een andere Laocoon positie te vinden met 10 zwarte stukken.

Of course there is the challenge of trying to add a combination to this Laocoon in order to get an exceptional composition. Arnaud Cordier told us that he found this Laocoon earlier, but it was first published on 26-02-2013 on the FFJD site (French Federation). Gérard Taille, Alexander Moisejev and me had intensive contact about trying to make a composition. It proved to be very difficult. First of all there seems to be no way to bring the White on 8 at his place. Partly for that reason it is also hard to avoid second solutions or interchangeable moves. For reaching an initial position with equal forces White has to give away a lot a lot of Man, with hardly room for that at the board. Further quality aspects like an esthetical initial position, economical captures and variants during the combination seemed us to be too far away. Finally agreement was reached that the composition of Gérard Taille and Alexander Moisejev together should be called the First World Record Laocoon composition. See the Applet below. Giving away a large number of pieces in one move, has a special charm in the case of a Laocoon.
Better not play the Applet automatically, but step by step.

De uitdaging is natuurlijk om een combinatie toe te voegen aan deze Laocoon stand om zodoende een uitzonderlijke compositie te bereiken. Arnaud Cordier deelde ons mede dat hij deze Laocoon al vroeger gevonden had, maar dat deze pas op 26-02-2013 gepubliceerd is op de FFFD site (Franse Dambond). Gérard Taille, Alexander Moisejev en ik hadden intensief contact over het maken van een compositie. Dat bleek heel moeilijk te zijn. Om te beginnen bleek het onmogelijk de witte op 8 op zijn plaats te brengen. Mede daarom is het moeilijk bij-oplossingen of verwisselbare zetten te vermijden. Om een aanvangsstand te bereiken met hetzelfde aantal stukken van beide kleuren moet wit er veel weggeven en daarvoor is er weinig plaats op het bord. Verdere kwaliteiten zoals een esthetische aanvangsstand, economische slagen en een variant tijdens de combinatie leken ons onbereikbaar. Tenslotte werden wij het er over eens dat de compositie van Gérard Taille en Alexander Moisejev samen de Eerste Wereldrecord Laocoon compositie genoemd moest worden. Veel stukken ineens weggeven heeft een bijzondere charme bij een Laocoon.
Het is beter om de Applet niet automatisch af te spelen, maar stap voor stap.

When you show this composition to a draughts-friend and ask him or her to solve it, then it will be quite a challenge. This will be even more the case for the next one. A good composer is never immediately satisfied with his composition. He will always try to do better. In this case it was possible to add a variant during the combination! This is very rare in the case of Laocoon compositions. As the previous one above, it has also been checked on second solutions. For both compositions it is proved that there is no other solution. For the second one below this was a bit more effort. This one resulted from a cooperation of Alexander Moisejev and me. The initial position suffered a bit of this extra variant. This variant, obviously not with a sharp final, is 27-22, 16 x 27, 33-28! (42 x 44) 47-41!!, 8-2, 2 x 49!

Als je deze compositie laat zien aan een damvriend en hem of haar vraagt het op te lossen, dan is dit nogal een uitdaging. Dat is nog meer zo in het geval van de volgende. Een goede componist is nooit meteen tevreden over zijn compositie. Hij zal altijd proberen het nog beter te doen. In dit geval bleek het mogelijk een variant tijdens de combinatie toe te voegen! Dat is heel zeldzaam bij Laocoon composities. Zoals ook bij de eerste hierboven is ook deze tweede onderzocht op bij-oplossingen. Voor beide composites geldt dat het bewezen is dat er geen andere oplossing is. Voor de tweede vergde dat wat meer werk dan voor de eerste. Samenwerking tussen Alexander Moisejev en mij, resulteerde in deze tweede. De aanvangstand had wat te lijden onder deze extra variant. Deze variant, die natuurlijk geen scherp slot heeft, luidt 27-22, 16 x 27, 33-28! (42 x 44) 47-41!!, 8-2, 2 x 49!

In draughts composition, in particular for end games, it is considered an important quality when there is more than one thematic variant. So it is quite logic to apply this criterium also for Laocoon positions. In the next article I will come back to that.

Wat betreft het componeren van dam-problemen, in het bijzonder van eindspelen, wordt het belangrijk geacht dat er meer dan één scherpe (thematische) variant is. Het ligt dus nogal voor de hand dat criterium ook voor Laocoon posities te hanteren. In het volgende artikel kom ik daarop terug.

The best multi-variant Laocoon compositions

Laocoon was, at the time of the Troyan Horse, a Troyan priest who was killed by two giant serpents. The stories of the ancient Greece and of the Romans differ. In both versions there is nothing related to the characteristics of what is called a Laocoon draughts-position. It seems to be fully unclear why those are called Laocoon.
Many of the words commenly used by draughts lovers are not very well defined. Like for instance the words Problem, Endgame, Forcing, Combination, etc. The same goes for Laocoon. For this article we keep it simple. We speak about positions of only one White King, without any further Whites, against let us say three Black Man as a minimum. White wins by attacking more than one Black at the same time in different directions, threatening to capture. In addition to that, this article only contains Laocoon positions with more than one thematic (sharp) variant. There are very many Laocoon positions published, as I learned from Wim de Zwart and Johan Konings who conduct very large collections of problems and motives, as most of you will know. I am grateful for their assistance enabling me selecting the very best Laocoon compositions ever published.

Laocoon was, in de tijd van het Paard van Troje, een Trojaanse priester die gedood werd door twee reuze-slangen. De overleveringen vanuit de Griekse en Romeinse oudheid geven verhalen die verschillend zijn. In geen van beide versies is iets te vinden dat een relatie heeft tot wat een Laocoon positie bij het dammen heet. Het schijnt volkomen onduidelijk te zijn waarom die Laocoon genoemd worden. Van veel van de woorden die door dam-liefhebbers gebruikt worden bestaat er geen nauwkeurige definitie. Zoals bijvoorbeeld voor Probleem, Eindspel, Forcing, Combinatie, etc. Dat geldt ook voor Laocoon. Voor dit artikel houden wij het eenvoudig. We spreken over posities met slecht één witte dam, zonder andere witte stukken, tegen laten wij zeggen minstens drie zwarte stukken. Wit wint door meer dan één zwart stuk tegelijk aan te vallen in verschillende richtingen, door op slag te staan. Bovendien bevat dit artikel alleen Laocoon posities met meer dan één scherpe variant. Er zijn heel veel Laocoon posities gepubliceerd, zoals ik geleerd heb van Wim de Zwart en Johan Konings die zeer grote verzamelingen bijhouden van problemen en motieven, zoals de meesten van jullie zullen weten. Ik ben heel dankbaar voor hun hulp die mij in staat stelde een selectie te maken uit de beste Laocoon composities ooit gepubliceerd.

King against three. Dam tegen drie.

The beautiful final by J.Wagter: Black 8, 13, 19, White 15 to move, has inspired many problemists to compose combinations. Strangely enough there is hardly any endgame based upon it. The first Applet shows a simple endgame I made recently. It results to the position of J. Wagter with actually two variants that might be considered as Laocoon. It is one of the most interesting positions of a White King against three Black.

De mooie stand van J. Wagter: Zwart 8,13, 19, Wit 15 aan zet, heeft veel problemisten geinspireerd tot het componeren van combinaties. Merkwaardig genoeg is er nauwelijks een eindspel op gemaakt. De eerste Applet laat een eenvoudig eindspel zien dat ik kortgeleden gemaakt heb. Het resulteert in de positie van J. Wagter welke zowaar twee varianten kent die als Laocoon beschouwd kunnen worden. Het is een van de meest interessante posities van een witte dam tegen drie zwarte stukken.

Many of the Laocoon positions collected by Johan Konings and Wim de Zwart might be the result of a combination worth to be collected, but do contain only one sharp variant or even no one at all. However some of them have several thematic variants. A nice example is illustrated below. The name of the author of the Laocoon is unknown and we could not find any reasonable combination based upon it. So I made one myself which is shown here. Composing combinations on Laocoon positions is not easy. The Blacks are spread over the whole Board with none at the borders. The King cannot reach his position by a capture, the promotion has to be a move and the White Man should preferably not be on the line 6-10 in the initial position.

Veel van de Laocoon posities die deel uitmaken van de collecties van Johan Konings en Wim de Zwart zijn wellicht wat overblijft na een combinatie die het waard is verzameld te worden, maar bevatten slechts één scherpe variant of zelfs geen enkele. Er zijn er echter ook die verschillende scherpe varianten hebben. Een mooi voorbeeld is hieronder te zien. De naam van de auteur van de Laocoon is niet bekend en wij konden ook geen redelijke bewerking vinden. Daarom heb ik er zelf maar wat op gemaakt. Combinaties construeren op Laocoon standen is niet eenvoudig. De zwarte stukken staan verspreid over het hele bord met geen enkele aan de rand, er is dus weinig ruimte voor een combinatie. De dam kan niet met een slag op zijn plaats gebracht worden. De promotie moet dus met een schuifzet en die witte schijf moet bij voorkeur niet al op de lijn 6-10 staan in de aanvangsstand.

The previous one was a very simple Laocoon. The next is one of the most interesting Laocoon positions with 5 Blacks, invented by V. Bieliauskas (see FMJD PWCP 2008 nr.41). The combination is very basic, but not easy to improve. The Lacoon contains five really different thematic variants!

De vorige was een heel eenvoudige Laocoon. De volgende behoort tot de meest interessante Laocoons met 5 zwarte stukken. Auteur V. Bieliauskas (zie FMJD PWCP 2008 nr. 41). De combinatie is simpel, maar niet eenvoudig te verbeteren. De Laocoon bevat vijf echt verschillende scherpe varianten!

This Laocoon is from A. Nikolaev. As opposed to a very good combination from him we will see later on, he was not very lucky with his composition based upon this six pieces Laocoon. His Black 2, 10, 14, 20, 30, 31, White 8, 13, 18, 19, 23, 29 composition has rather peculiar interchangeable moves, 23-19 or 9-3. His combination cannot be saved, so I made a totally different combination that is presented here. The Laocoon is the best with six Blacks that we could find.

Deze Laocoon is van A. Nikolaev. In tegenstelling tot een heel goede combinatie van hem die wij later zullen zien, was A. Nikolaev niet gelukkig met zijn bewerking op deze zes stukken Laocoon. Zijn zwart 2, 10, 14, 20, 30, 31, White 8, 13, 18, 19, 23, 29 compositie lijdt aan een merkwaardige zet-verwisseling, 23-19 or 9-3. Andreas Kuyken invented in 1972 the next Laocoon and the nice combination leading to it. I will give some comments below the Applet, but for futher details see the Annex, a separate article following this one. The articles are in reverse order, so the Annex is published a bit earlier. Here it is also explained how to capture, because that is not always so easy to see, in particular when White has a choice with the same number of Blacks to capture.

It is very much a pity that the intended main variant fails. Below we give this variant as well as the second solution.

The reason for presenting first the Laocoon with nine Blacks and later those with eight is that these have more sharp variants than the one with nine Blacks. Moreover there is a story to tell about the eight Blacks Laocoons and the outstanding combinations. Anyway, the one with nine is very interesting as well, it is probably the maximum size of the Laocoons. There are more of this size, but this one of P.C. Bais 1940 is the best of them. For details and how to capture see again the Annex.

Er is een reden voor om eerst de Laocoon met 9 zwarte stukken te laten zien en dan pas die met acht. Die hebben meer scherpe varianten dan die met negen zwarte stukken. Bovendien is er nog wat te vertellen over de acht stukken Laocoons en de bijzonder mooie bewerkingen erop. Hoe dan ook, die met negen is ook heel interessant, het is waarschijnlijk het maximale aantal stukken van Laocoons. Er zijn er meer met negen stukken, maar deze van P.C. Bais uit 1940 is de beste. The final part of this article starts with a composition of A.Nikolaev. As explained above it is very difficult to add beautiful combinations to Laocoon positions, with all the Black pieces scattered over the board. When the Laocoon is very large there is hardly room for adding an additional Black to be captured during the combination. Taking that into account the combination of A. Nikolaev is one of the greatest combinations ever. The White to become a King is far away from the promotion line, several majority captures, a number of Blacks are brought where they are required, etc. However, his Laocoon position is not the best possible. This will be explained after the Applet and the list of thematic variants.

Het laatste deel van dit artikel begint met een compositie van A.Nikolaev. Zoals hierboven uitgelegd is het heel moeilijk om een mooie combinatie te maken op een Laocoon positie, met al die zwarte stukken verspreid over het hele bord. Bij een combinatie is het gebruikelijk zwarte stukken te slaan, maar dat is niet eenvoudig als er voor een heel grote Laocoon zoveel stukken moeten overblijven. So far it seems to be perfect, but the Laocoon can be improved significantly in two different ways!
Tot zover lijkt het perfect, maar de Laocoon kan aanzienlijk verbeterd worden, zelfs op twee verschillende manieren!

When I made the two composions of which one is shown further below I was not aware of the composition of A.Nikolaev. It is very well possible that Alexander Moisejev did not know the one of A. Nikolaev and those of me neither. Anyway, it is A. Moisejev who found that the Black on 9 is not required for the Laocoon position of A. Nikolaev. The Laocoon position is far better when the Black at 9 is removed!! Then it contains the same sharp variants as the one of A. Nilkolaev. (18-22) and (21-27) and (24-29) and (40-44) and (40-45), but also three more!!
Toen ik de twee composities maakte waavan er één verder hieronder te zien is, kende ik de compositie van A. Nikolaev niet. Het is heel goed mogelijk dat A. Moisejev die van A. Nikolaev niet kende en die van mij ook niet. Hoe dan ook, het is Alexander Moisejev die gevonden heeft dat het zwarte stuk op 9 niet nodig is voor de Laocoon positie van A. Nikolaev. Het is zelfs veel beter de zwarte op 9 weg te laten. Dan blijven de scherpe varianten van de Laocoon van A.Nikolaev, maar er komen er nog drie bij!!

A.Moisejev made a combination on the Laocoon without the Black on 9, but the best composition is simply taking the one of A. Nikolaev and remove the Black on 9! Then we have a world-class Laocoon composition. See the next Applet.

Independently of all this I found the Laocoon position that is also much better than the one of A. Nikolaev. The only difference is that the Black on 11 is now on 7 (9 remains), but the effect is astonishing! Now we have two additional sharp variants compared with the Laocoon of A. Nikolaev, but most importantly a far more interesting small endgame than included in all other Laocoon positions!! Of course it is still simple, but it can be called an endgame, not only a final position. The combination of A. Nikolaev is not possible with 11 on 7, so automatically I made something really different, of which the majority captures steal the show. 27-21 (23 x 43) 21 x 1 (43- 48, 48 x 30) is a draw.

Onafhankelijk van dit alles vond ik de Laocoon positie die ook veel beter is als die van A.Nikolaev. Het enige verschil is dat de zwarte op 11 nu op 7 staat (9 blijft), maar het resultaat is verbluffend! Nu hebben we twee scherpe varianten meer in vergelijking met de Laocoon van A. Nikolaev. Maar het belangrijkste is een veel interessanter eindspelletje dan bij alle andere Laocoon posities!! Natuurlijk is het nog steeds eenvoudig. Maar het kan een eindspel genoemd worden, niet slechts een slotstand. De combinatie van A.Nikolaev gaat niet met 11 op 7, dus automatisch maakte ik een heel andere, waarvan de meerslagen de show stelen. 27-21 (23 x 43) 21 x 1 (43- 48, 48 x 30) is remise.

The main variant is (9-13), not sharp at all in the A.Nikolaev position and obviously not possible without the Black at 9. The (9-13) variant has two fully sharp (harakiri) variants (all Laocoon positions have harakiri variants) and two longer variants, thematic with one dual.

De hoofdvariant is (9-13), in de A. Nikolaev positie is dat helemaal niet scherp en vanzelfsprekend niet mogelijk zonder het zwarte stuk op 9. De (9-13) variant heeft twee volkomen scherpe (harakiri) varianten (alle Laocoons hebben harakiri varianten) en twee langere varianten, thematisch met een dual.

Quite remarkable is that the Moisejev variation (without the Black at 9, with 7 on 11) can be reached both by the A. Nikolaev combination and by my totally different combination! This is also the case for the A.Nikolaev Laocoon (with 9 and 11). My Laocoon (with 7 and 9) can only be reached with my combination. So the one with the best variants can probably only be realized in one way. Maybe this is a bit a pity, because other combinations would be welcome, but on the other hand it makes it unique.

Nogal opmerkelijk is dat de Moisejev variatie (zonder een zwart stuk op 9 en met 7 op 11) zowel bereikt kan worden met de combinatie van A. Nikolaev als met mijn geheel andere combinatie! Dat is ook het geval met de A. Nikolaev Laocoon (met 9 en 11). Mijn Laocoon (met 7 en 9) kan alleen tot stand komen met mijn combinatie. Dus die met de meeste variatie in de varianten kan waarschijnlijk slechts op één manier bewerkt worden. Het zou welicht mooi zijn als ook andere combinaties mogelijk waren, maar anderzijds wordt het zo ook uniek.

I strongly recommend the readers to use a normal draughts board, or a magnetic one, when studying the Annex. This gives a far better understanding of the larger Laocoons than by playing the Applets and reading the text.

Annex to The Best Laocoon Compositions

This Annex belongs to the Blog article The best multi-variant Laocoon compositions. It gives the full solutions of the largest Laocoons, with 7, 8, or 9 Black Man. The solution is written in such a way that it shows how to capture. Between the start and the end of the capture the fields are given where the White King makes an intermediate landing before capturing the next Black. How to capture can be a bit complicated, in particular when White has the choice between more than one capture with the same number of Black pieces, which is quite often the case. The reader can judge himself if a variant is fully sharp, or contains a dual, or is not sharp at all. The use of a draughts-board will be very helpful.
