With one Man more White seems  to win easily. However, even when White starts with a forcing, Black can take the opportunity to reach a surprising draw. See the first diagram.

Starting with the first diagram and choosing the longest variant, the solution takes 24 moves. More important is that every move of White of all variants are the only ones winning and sometimes quite surprising.

The best miniature of Matus

The previous article contains a number of excellent compositions of V.Matus. This second article is dedicated to a superb composition that needs quite a lot of explanation to fully understand why this composition is something special. The first Applet gives the solution of the first thematic variant. The second thematic variant is explained by the next Applet. These two variants make it a good miniature. However,a third,totally different, variant is the one that makes the composition superb. Het vorige artikel laat een aantal uitstekende composities zien van V.Matus. Dit tweede artikel is gewijd aan een formidabele compositie die nogal wat uitleg nodig heeft om volledig te begrijpen waarom deze compositie iets bijzonders is. De eerste Applet geeft de oplossing van de eerste scherpe variant. De tweede scherpe variant wordt duidelijk door de tweede Applet. Deze twee varianten maken het een goede miniatuur. Maar een derde, totaal verschillende, variant is die welke de compositie formidabel maakt. From the initial position of the miniature shown by the first Applet White could play as follows. So far it is a good miniature with the two thematic variants, but not much more than that. Tot zover is het een goede miniatuur met de twee scherpe varianten, maar niet veel meer dan dat. The surprise is that this miniature also contains a real endgame,fully different, with far more moves and rather difficult to solve. See both false solutions below. - 31, 2 (21) 11 (27) 39 (32) 42 (50) 38 (43) 48 (30!) 25 (44)=. - 31, 2 (21) 29, 7 (28) 11 (40!) 35 (27) 42 (27-32)=. De verrassing is dat deze miniatuur ook een volwaardig eindspel biedt, volkomen anders, met veel meer zetten en niet zo eenvoudig om op te lossen. Zie de twee schijnoplossingen hierboven. V.Matus

At 2-09-2017 I published an article with a number of brilliant compositions of Evgraf Zubov. My plan was to do the same with compositions of V.Matus who was very successful with draughts composition contests including World Championships. So I studied Turbo Dambase, Eric´s Damsite, CPI publications and the high quality book of Matus, made with the assistance of Zubov. The book contains a large number of photos. A few of these photos show Pieter Hildering, the charming Vitalia Doumesh and me at a meeting at 2008 in Poland with Matus, Zubov and Kaciuska. A few months later I visited Moscow for about a week in order to meet Matus and Zubov, where we showed and discussed our compositions. The selection I made for this article is mainly from the book of Matus and does not contain compositions of the selection made at Eric`s Damsite, but other interesting compositions out of the book. During my extended search I found to my suprise a lot of false solutions at every source. One of the examples is the selection published at Eric´s Damsite, called "Top Problemisten in aktie". The selection of Matus at Eric´s Damsite is meant to be a selection out of his best compositions, but eight of them have second solutions! In spite of that Eric´s Damsite is very much worth to have a look at. Op 2-09-2017 publiceerde ik een artikel met een aantal brilliante composities van Evraf Zubov. Mijn plan was hetzelfde te doen met composities van V.Matus die heel veel succes had met dam-compositie wedstrijden waaronder Wereldkampioenschappen. Dus bestudeerde ik Turbo Dambase, Eric´s Damsite, CPI publicaties en het fraai uitgevoerde boek van Matus, waaraan ook Zubov meegewerkt heeft. Het boek bevat ook een flink aantal fotos. Te zien zijn op een paar ervan Pieter Hildering, de charmante Vitalia Doumesh en ik toen wij Matus, Zubov en Kaciuska ontmoet hebben in Polen voor een vergadering over de FMJD en de CPI.
