An Exercise (Oefening) and a Composition

The two main parts of this article are:

- an exercise concerning your imagination (imaginative faculty) as a draughts player. This has to do with your ability to calculate variants with quite a number of moves. For Grandmasters this exercise is too easy, but for others it might be a nice challenge. I also suggest a possibility to make such a calculation a bit easier.
- a composition based upon the same final, but with a solution that has much more to offer. With considerable choices for both Black and White, as well as thematic variants and a surprising false solution.

Dit artikel bestaat uit twee delen:

- een oefening betreffende jouw voorstellings-vermogen als dammer. Dat heeft te maken met het vermogen varianten met een flink aantal zetten te berekenen. Voor Grootmeesters is deze oefening te eenvoudig, maar voor anderen kan het een leuke uitdaging zijn. Ik geef ook een suggestie een dergelijke berekening wat eenvoudiger te maken.
- een compositie gebaseerd op hetzelfde slot, met een oplossing die veel meer te bieden heeft. Met nogal wat verschillende mogelijkheden, zowel voor zwart als voor wit. Met spannende varianten en een verrassende schijn-oplossing.

Exercise



The only way to try to win is 44-39. Black has a difficult choice now: (11-17) or (12-17). In both cases all the next moves of both Black and White are obvious. So these two variants have only a minor difference. Also almost the same position is reached. However, the solution at the end is very different.

De enige winstkans is 44-39. Zwart moet dan een moeilijke beslissing nemen: (11-17) of (12-17). In beide gevallen zijn de daarop volgende zetten van zowel zwart als wit vanzelfsprekend. De varianten zijn dus nauwelijks verschillend en de positie die bereikt wordt ook. De oplossing echter is aan het eind heel verschillend.

- 44-39 (11-17) of (12-17) 39-33 (17-21) 37-32 (27 x 38) 33 x 42 (21-27) 29-24 (18-23) 25-20 (23-28) 20-14 (27-31) 14-9 (28-32).

Try to play these moves in your mind, starting from the diagram and with (12-17) as first move of Black. The challenge is to "see" the position at the end of the variant given above. When you "see" this position with your eyes closed you can calculate the best and winning moves of White. The position you have to have in mind is given below. When it were a diagram, finding the winning moves would be very easy.

- Black 11,15, 31, 32. White 9, 24, 34, 35, 42. White to move. Wit aan zet.

Probeer de bovenstaande zetten, beginnend vanaf het diagram met 44-39 en (12-17), als een blind-speler na te spelen. De uitdaging is de positie te "zien" die aan het eind van de gegeven spelgang wordt bereikt. Als je die positie "ziet" met gesloten ogen dan kan je de beste en winnende zetten voor wit vinden. De positie die je dan in gedachten hebt is hierboven in cijferstand gegeven. Als het een diagram zou zijn, dan zou het vinden van de winnende zetten heel eenvoudig zijn.

So far the variant starting with 44-39 and (12-17). The other variant starting with 44-39 and (11-17) is even more interesting. It is good to know that it is easier now, because there is no need now to play again the whole variant in your mind. It is much easier to remind the final position of the first variant and simply replace the Black on 11 to 12, with your eyes closed. Then you can quickly find the winning move of White, with a very nice final.

Tot zover de variant die begint met 44-39 en (12-17). De andere variant die begint met 44-39 en (11-17) is nog interessanter. Het is goed om te weten dat het nu makkelijker is, want het is niet meer nodig de hele variant zonder bord na te spelen. Het is veel handiger de laatste positie van de eerste variant in gedachten te nemen en eenvoudig met gesloten ogen de zwarte van 11 op 12 te plaatsen. Dan kan je snel de winnende zet van wit vinden, met een heel leuk slot.

Composition

The excercise above might be found interesting, but a composition should offer more. One of the goals of the composer is to get active and intelligent play from both colours. Preferable with more than one interesting variant. At the initial position of the first Applet it is clear that 24-19 is not the way to win. Because (22-27) 19-14 (15-20!) brings a draw immediately. The first Applet shows a variant that is not thematic at all, but gives White the opportunity to choose a nice way to win. It is also gives the proof that the first two moves of the main solution (8-13) and (22-27) are forced.

De oefening hierboven vindt men wellicht interessant, maar een compositie moet meer brengen. Wat een componist graag wil bereiken is actief en intelligent spel van beide kleuren. Bij voorkeur met meer dan één interessante variant. Vanaf de aanvangs-stand van de eerste Applet is het duidelijk dat wit met 24-19 niet winnen kan. Immers na (22-27) 19-14 (15-20!) is het direct remise. De eerste Applet laat een variant zien die helemaal niet scherp is, maar wit de gelegenheid geeft om op een leuke manier te winnen. Het is tevens het bewijs dat de beide eerste zetten van de hoofd-variant (8-13) en (22-27) gedwongen zijn.

Now we come to the real variants. Black obviously has to try to play (22-27-31) followed by (32-37). The way for White to prevent that is to play 33-28 at the right time. When it is not the right time we get one of the biggest surprises of this composition. With (15-20!!) Black prevents both 9-3 and 9-4 because of a combination. White still has a chance, but Black has an amazing escape.
We komen nu tot de echte varianten. Zwart moet natuurlijk proberen (22-27-31) te laten volgen door (32-37). De manier van wit om dat te verhinderen is op het juiste moment 33-28 te spelen. Is het niet het goede moment dan volgt één van de grootste verrassingen van deze compositie. Met (15-20!!) weet zwart zowel 9-3 als 9-4 door combinaties te verhinderen. Wit heeft toch nog een kans, maar zwart heeft een verbazingwekkende ontsnapping.

Now it seems to be difficult for White, because after 14-9 (15-20) 33-28 is also a draw of course and after 14-9 (27-31) 9-3 as well. However, White can do it the opposite way! See the short variants below:
Het lijkt nu moeilijk te worden voor wit. Immers na 14-9 (15-20) 33-28 is het natuurlijk ook remise en na 14-9 (27-31) 9-3 ook. Echter wit kan het precies omgekeerd doen. Zie de korte varianten hieronder.

- 14-9 (15-20) 9-3! (20-25) 3 x 17!! of course not 3-26?
- 14-9 (27-31) 33-28!! (32 x 23) 9-3 (31-36) 3 x 21! (36-41) 35-30! (24 x 44) 42-37 (41 x 32) 21 x 18.

Very subtle variants. In particular because White can play 33-28 at the wrong or the right moments. Because of the variants given above, Black has to prevent 33-28 by playing (24-29) 33 x 24. This leads to continuing the main variant that is given again from the start in order to avoud confusion. The climax is the amazing move 40-34!!
Heel subtiele varianten. In het bijzonder omdat wit 33-28 kan spelen op de verkeerde en de goede momenten. Vanwege de varianten hierboven gegeven, moet zwart verhinderen dat wit 33-28 spelen kan door (24-29) 33 x 24. Dit leidt tot het vervolg van de hoofdvariant die weer vanaf het begin wordt gegeven om te vermijden dat het niet duidelijk is. De climax is de fantastische zet 40-34!!

Black can play an act of dispair now, but White does not have a problem of getting a winning majority endgame. For instance like below.
Zwart kan nu een wanhoopsdaad plegen, maar het kost wit geen moeite een gewonnen overmachts-eindspel te bereiken. Bijvoorbeeld zoals hieronder aangegeven.

These two variants are fully thematic. There is a third, not thematic, variant where White can choose to win with the same final! That is quite unusual.

Deze twee varianten zijn helemaal scherp. Er is een derde, niet scherpe, variant waarbij wit kan kiezen voor hetzelfde slot! Dat is nogal uitzonderlijk.

A newborn simple idea can grow up to a mature composition.

Een pasgeboren ideetje kan opgroeien tot een gerijpte compositie.
