The final:Black 44, King 50. White 49, King 45 or White King 49, 45.

From the point of view of a draughts-composer there is a significant difference between the position Black 44, K50 with White 49, K45 that can only be reached by a capture to 45 and the other position with White K49, 45 that cannot be reached by a capture, only by a move of the King to 49. Many draughts-composers have published problems with one or both of these finals. Turbo Dambase contains more than hundred of both. In this article we present some of the best ones, much variety as can be expected when something special is required. The author of the first one is Hein Wilsens, the new chief-editor of "De Problemist". The composition does not only have an impressive solution, but contains an extraordinary surprise as well.

A spectacular composition proving the skills of the author. A closer look tells us that the same combination is possible without the Black on 24. However, the 24 is required in order to prevent a second solution. The extraordinary surprise is that this second solution is even more interesting than the main solution!! Both Hein Wilsens and me were not aware of the fact that this little endgame was found as long ago as July 1939 by J. Dienske. See the second Applet and the variants below it.

This small endgame contains five thematic variants!! Thanks to Johan Konings and Turbo Dambase we found a number of compositions based upon this little end game or comparable. With the exception of a nice one by Jan Scheijen, most of the other compositions are not fully satisfactory. The composition of J. Dienske has interchangeable moves.

- (11) 22 (50) 6, 40
- (12) 15! (50) 29, 1
- (12) 15! (17) 33 (50) 6, 40
- (12) 15! (18) 33! (50) 29, 1

It is of course remarkable that the composition without 24 contains two interesting solutions. However, it is not the ideal composition leading to this particular endgame. First of all the combination contains a dual, 3 x 4 as well as 3 x 9. And the combination of Hein Wilsens has either only the original final or two solutions. So the challenge is to reach the new final in another way, preferably with no Black on 44 and 35 in the initial position. The first try is given below.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W20,21,32,35,36,38,40,49:B7,12,15,17,19,22,26,39"] 1. 32-27 22x31 2. 36x27 15x24 3. 27-22 17x28 4. 38-33 26x17 5. 33x2 39-44 6. 35-30 24x35 7. 2x24 *

The second one has my preference. Maximum effect with minimum size, only 6 x 6. The move 35-30 is a bit more subtle in this case, with the sacrifice of the White King after (44 x 35, 35-40). The only way to win is 43-38!!

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W15,20,35,39,40,49:B12,18,19,24,29,38"] 1. 20-14 19x10 2. 15x4 29-33 3. 4x43 33x44 4. 35-30 24x35 5. 43-38 *

Variants after 2 x 24 or after 43-38!! Varianten na 2 x 24 of na 43-38!!

- (18) 33 (50) 29, 1

So we have seen the extraordinary composition with two exciting solutions and the, I suppose, best miniature possible on this particular little multi-variant endgame. We continue with some more compositions with the final 44, K50 /49, K45. Starting with another impressive one of Hein Wilsens.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W16,20,24,28,30,31,32,33,37,38,39,42,43,44,45,46,49:B3,7,9,10,11,12,13,15,17,19,21,22,27,34,35,36,40"] 1. 30-25 19x30 2. 28-23 15x24 3. 23-18 12x23 4. 33-29 24x33 5. 39x8 3x12 6. 43-39 34x43 7. 25x34 40x29 8. 46-41 36x47 9. 45-40 27x36 10. 16x18 12x23 11. 37-31 36x27 12. 32x1 43x32 13. 1-18 47x50 14. 18x7 35x44 15. 7x45 *

V. Studencov managed to reach this final in such a way that Black has a choice of captures, both leading to it in a different way.

Even more in favour is when two different finals can be reached. J.A. Picard found in 1959 a very simple way to realize such a choice. Funny, in spite of the not economic captures.

- 28-23 (37 x 46) 23 x 3 (46 x 50) 3-8 (35 x 44) 8 x 38!!

So far the position with a White King on 45. As said before, the other position Black 44, K50 / White 45, K49 cannot be reached with a capture by the White King. It can be reached by one move of the White King after a combination, or can even be the result of an endgame. We start with an example of an endgame that is rather deep, after a simple combination. For those who prefer initial positions that look as out of a game, the position after the first move might have preference. In particular the Black moves of the endgame are interesting. Black has to play in such a way that he prevents White playing 44-39 and 40-34.

Among the more than 100 compositions in Turbo Dambase with this final, there are very few with an additional thematic variant. One of my previous articles contained a nice one of W.Lente. Below I give three more. The author of the next one is Evgraf Zubov. Your attention for the move 32-28!! The initial position is reached after (19-24) 35-30 (24 x 35).
