An amazing miniature

A miniature is presented here both by a diagram and as an Applet. The reason for containing a diagram is explaining a remarkable aspect of the composition presenting the variants by written notation, instead of an Applet for every variant.
It seems obvious that the first move should be 34-29, because it prevents (18-23) and looks the best from a positional point of view.
However, Black has a big surprise with (7-11!!) that guarantees the draw, with the help of combinations as the following variants prove.

- 34-29 (7-11) 25-20 (19-24, 18-23, 16-21, 11 x 15)=.
- 34-29 (7-11) 29-24 (8-13) 33-29 (5-10!) 29-23, 25 x 5 (11-17, 13-18, 16 x 36) =.
- 34-29 (7-11) 29-24 (8-13) 33-29 (5-10) 31-27 (18-22, 5-10, 16-21, 11 x 35) =.
- 34-29 (7-11) 30-24 (19 x 30) 25 x 34 (18-22) 28 x 17 (11 x 22) 29-24 (6-11) 24-19 (11-17) 19-14 (8-13) 31-27 (22 x 31) 26 x 37 (17-22) 34-29 (16-21) 29-24 (21-26)=.
- 34-29 (7-11) 31-27? (19-23, 18-22, 16-21, 11 x 35) z +!

The subtle solution with a nice climax is shown by the Applet. You can be sure that White wins convincingly as well after all other moves of Black and that all White moves shown by the Applet are the only ones winning.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W25,26,28,30,31,33,34:B5,6,7,8,16,18,19."] 1. 31-27 18-23 2. 28-22 23-28 3. 27-21 16x18 4. 33x11 6x17 5. 34-29 17-22 6. 26-21 5-10 7. 25-20 10-15 8. 30-24 19x30 9. 21-17 15x33 10. 17x39

Clearly enough after 31-27 (7-11) it is still not possible to play 34-29, but White has a very strong alternative that leads to a positional disaster for Black. White has many ways to win, including a spectacular finish as shown by the next Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W25,26,28,30,31,33,34:B5,6,7,8,16,18,19."] 1. 31-27 7-11 2. 28-22 8-13 3. 26-21 5-10 4. 33-29 10-14 5. 21-17 16-21 6. 27x7 18x27 7. 25-20 14x25 8. 7-2 13-18 9. 2x24 27-32 10. 24-19 32-38 11. 17-11 6x17 12. 29-23 18x40 13. 19-8 25x34 14. 8x35 34-39 15. 35-49

The positional superiority of White after 31-27 is well shown after (7-12) or (6-11) both leading to the same position, but with a different order of the moves. The next Applet shows 31-27 (7-12).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W25,26,28,30,31,33,34:B5,6,7,8,16,18,19."] 1. 31-27 7-12 2. 34-29 6-11 3. 28-22 8-13 4. 33-28 5-10 5. 29-23 18x29 6. 28-23 19x17 7. 30-24 29x20 8. 25x5

For those who want to publish one of my compositions with this nice final in a newspaper or whatever, but prefer a simpler version, I present two not complicated compositions. One straightforward, the other with a simple forcing.

The solutions will be clear to you.

Doet zwart in het eindspelletje direct (5-10) i.p.v. (17-22) dan speelt wit 29-24 (19-23) 25-20 en zwart heeft geen schijn van kans meer.

Below another variation, with Black to move after the combination and the first move of White in the end game a little bit more surprising.
After the first move 38-33 (17-22) 37-31, etc.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W21,26,30,35,36,37,38,39,48:B5,7,12,13,14,17,19,24,28."] 1. 38-33 7-11 2. 33x22 17x28 3. 21-17 11x22 4. 39-33 28x39 5. 48-43 39x48 6. 30-25 48x31 7. 36x29 12-17 8. 35-30 17-22 9. 26-21 5-10 10. 25-20 10-15 11. 30-24 19x30 12. 21-17 15x33 13. 17x39

Keep Sharp II, Blijf Scherp II

In the previous article of my Blog I presented the two variants below. The first one 30-25 (15-20) 28-22 (9-13?) with an original fully sharp win. The second one 30-25 (15-20) 28-22 (7-11!) giving a very narrow escape for Black.

25 (15-20) 22 (13?) 17 (13-19) 33-28! (19-24) 11, 2 (27) 19!, 14 (31) 9, 26.

25 (15-20) 22 (11!) 28 (13) 23-18 (16, 13) 17 (18) 28-23 (19) 12 (19-24, 33) 9 (38) 4 (21)=.

So 30-25 does not win and 28-22 does not seem to be better, because after (7-12) all other moves than 30-25 lead to a draw, see below:

- 22-18 (9-13)=.
- 29-24 (12-18)=.
- 30-24 (9-13)=.

However, the amazing effect is that after 28-22 (7-12) 30-25 is the only one winning!See the first Applet.

Echter, verrassend genoeg na 28-22 (7-12) is 30-25 de enige winst! Zie de eerste Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,28,29,30,33:B4,7,9,14,15."] 1. 28-22 7-12 2. 30-25 9-13 3. 29-24 15-20 4. 24x15 4-10 5. 15x4 14-19 6. 4x1 19x39 7. 1-34

After 28- 22 Black can make it much more difficult for White. Not by playing the moves listed below, but by (15-20).

- (13) 17 (13-19) 28 (15-20) 25 or 12, 12.
- (11) 30-24 (13) 24-19, 29 x 9, 23-18.
- after (14-20) or (4-10) many wins.

The position reached after 28-22 (15-20) is the highlight of the composition. This position contains the amazing number of four false solutions, all narrow escapes. A few positions later there will be one more!
One of the four, 30-25? as first move, is already explained at the start of this article. For the other three see the next Applets.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,28,29,30,33:B4,7,9,14,15."] 1. 28-22 15-20 2. 22-17 20-25 3. 17-12 7x18 4. 23x12 25x23 5. 12-7 9-13 6. 7-2 23-29 7. 2x10 29x38

A special effect. 12-8 does not win either and 7-1 is a win for Black!

Een bijzonder effect. 12-8 wint natuurlijk ook niet en 7-1 verliest zelfs!

The third false solution is not so clean, Black can chose different ways making a draw. The Applet shows the nicest way, which is also the fastest. The two sacrifices at the end are a must.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,28,29,30,33:B4,7,9,14,15."] 1. 28-22 15-20 2. 22-17 20-25 3. 30-24 14-20 4. 24x15 25-30 5. 23-18 30-35 6. 17-12 7-11 7. 12-8 35-40 8. 8-3 40-44 9. 3x25 4-9 10. 25x3 11-17 11. 3x26 44-50

The fourth false solution requires a sacrifice of Black in order to survive. At the end we see that White is missing a piece on 25, this is one of the reasons that 30-25 is the right second move.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,28,29,30,33:B4,7,9,14,15."] 1. 28-22 15-20 2. 30-24 7-12 3. 24x15 9-13 4. 29-24 4-10 5. 15x4 14-19 6. 4x7 19x39

After all these draws it is time to show how to win. The first variant leads to a three-fold opposition requiring precise moves of White.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,28,29,30,33:B4,7,9,14,15."] 1. 28-22 15-20 2. 22-18 9-13 3. 18x9 14x3 4. 30-25 4-9 5. 25x14 9x20 6. 33-28 3-9 7. 23-19 7-12 8. 28-22

Maybe you think that after (9 x 20) White cannot do it wrong anymore.
Well, White can, as is shown by the next Applet!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,29,33:B3,7,20."] 1. 23-18 3-9 2. 33-28 20-25 3. 28-23 7-11 4. 29-24 11-17

This false solution would hardly be worth mentioning, if not Black could lose in an interesting way when he does not play the right moves in the right order! Not thematic, but White can choose a nice way to win.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,29,33:B3,7,20."] 1. 23-18 20-25 2. 29-24 3-9 3. 33-29 9-14 4. 18-13 7-12 5. 29-23 14-20 6. 24x15 25-30 7. 15-10 30-34 8. 10-5 12-17 9. 13-9 34-39 10. 9-4 17-21 11. 4-22 39-43 12. 22-17 21x12 13. 23-18 12x23 14. 5x49

Now we come to the main variant. Below the solution is shown starting from the initial position. I explained all variants and false solutions, but one more remark is required for fully understanding the composition. At the 6th move Black could also play (17-21) instead of (17-22). After (17-21) White wins by playing 23-19!15-10 (21-26) 24-20!! and not 10-4 because of (23-28!)=.

(17-22). Na (17-21) wint wit door 23-19!15-10 (21-26) 24-20!! en niet 10-4 vanwege (23-28!)=.

It is a lot of information for one end game / forcing, but now understanding every move you can relax and enjoy this rich composition, I hope.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,28,29,30,33:B4,7,9,14,15."] 1. 28-22 15-20 2. 22-18 9-13 3. 18x9 4x13 4. 30-24 7-12 5. 24x15 12-17 6. 29-24 17-22 7. 24-20 14x25 8. 15-10 13-19 9. 23x14 25-30 10. 10-4 30-34 11. 4x27 34-40 12. 27-49 40-45 13. 49-40 45x34 14. 33-29

I am sorry, but I confused you a bit. This was not the main variant of course, a composition should have a fully sharp principal variant, preferably. So please, play the last Applet that shows the real main variant!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,28,29,30,33:B4,7,9,14,15."] 1. 28-22 15-20 2. 22-18 9-13 3. 18x9 4x13 4. 30-24 7-12 5. 24x15 12-17 6. 29-24 17-22 7. 24-20 14x25 8. 15-10 25-30 9. 23-19 13x24 10. 10-4 30-34 11. 4x27 34-40 12. 27-22 40-45 13. 33-29 24x33 14. 22x50

It is possible to reach the 5 x 5 position from a 7 x 7 minature. However, I definitely prefer the pure 5 x 5 version.

Keep Sharp in 2012. Blijf Scherp in 2012

First of all my best wishes for all of you. I hope 2012 be a nice year for you and your family. The main thing is your health of body and mind. Maybe the composition presented here can help a bit to keep a sharp mind.

After 29-24 (7-12) or 30-24 (7-12) 28-22 (9-13) White does not have any chance to win.
However after 30-25 (7-12) White wins.

In tegenstelling to 29-24 of 30-24 wint wit door 30-25 (7-12) als volgt:

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,28,29,30,33:B4,7,9,14,15."] 1. 30-25 7-12 2. 28-22 9-13 3. 29-24 15-20 4. 24x15 4-10 5. 15x4 14-19 6. 4x7 19x39 7. 7-34

This of course was not difficult at all. The next variant even wins in several ways, but we prefer the nice way.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,28,29,30,33:B4,7,9,14,15."] 1. 30-25 7-11 2. 29-24 11-17 3. 24-19 4-10 4. 33-29 17-21 5. 19-13 9x18 6. 23x12 21-27 7. 12-7 27-31 8. 28-23 31-37 9. 7-2 37-42 10. 23-19 14x34 11. 25-20 15x24 12. 2x5

I suppose you want me to present something better than this. Indeed there is a better variant, not brilliant, but at least fully original and sharp.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,28,29,30,33:B4,7,9,14,15."] 1. 30-25 15-20 2. 28-22 9-13 3. 22-17 13-19 4. 33-28 19-24 5. 17-11 24x22 6. 11x2 22-27 7. 23-19 14x23 8. 25x14 27-31 9. 14-9 4x13 10. 2x26

However, the composition is not that simple. When Black plays the moves (15-20) and (7-11) in the right order he escapes in a quite spectacular way.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,28,29,30,33:B4,7,9,14,15."] 1. 30-25 15-20 2. 28-22 7-11 3. 33-28 9-13 4. 23-18 11-16 5. 18x9 4x13 6. 22-17 13-18 7. 28-23 14-19 8. 23x12 19-24 9. 25x14 24x33 10. 14-9 33-38 11. 9-4 16-21

In order to keep your mind fit you can try to find the right solution after 28-22 (15-20) 22-18 (9-13) 18 x 9 ( 4 x 13).
When you give the right solution, including the main false solutions, there will be a prize to win and everybody who reads this blog will admire you.

Happy New Year!

Computer Olympiad 2011

The International Computer Games Association (ICGA)is active for many years, publishes a periodical with professional articles about computer programming concerning a wide variety of mind sport games. The ICGA, like the FMJD, manages finding opportunities of organizing international tournaments, in particular the Computer Games Olympiad.
The Computer Olympiad 2011 was organized by Professor v.d.Herik of the University of Tilburg, The Netherlands, very well assisted by Joke Hellemons.
The Computer Olympiad was held for the 16th time, during those years at many places world-wide.
About twenty different mind games with a large number of programs participated, like three versions of Go (9 x 9, 13 x 13, 19 x19), Chess, Chinese Chess, Connect-6,Backgammon and many other.

Our international 10 X 10 draughts was also represented at the Computer Olympiad. As we already do for over 25 years the draughts tournament was organized by Leo Nagels and me. Leo also participated with his program Cerberus and I conducted the tournament acting as referee.
First we show a very interesting game between Cerberus (White) against TD King. The computer program Cerberus finds a way out of a difficult position, by preparing a sacrifice. TD King was forced to equalize the material, because otherwise he would have lost the game as the first Applet shows.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W27,28,29,30,32,33,34,36,37,41,42,46:B3,4,6,11,13,16,17,18,19,21,25,26."] 1. 29-24 3-9 2. 36-31 17-22 3. 28x17 11x22 4. 33-29 6-11 5. 42-38 11-17 6. 38-33 19-23 7. 24-20 25x14 8. 29-24 4-10 9. 30-25 10-15 10. 33-29 14-19 11. 32-28 19x39 12. 28x8 21x32 13. 37x28 22x24 14. 8-3 26x37 15. 3x43

Good computer programs always see such combinations, so immediately after the sacrifice 24-20 (25 x 14) 29-24 TD King played (23-28) keeping his positional advantage. The next Applet gives the moves till the decisive moment of the game.

Goede computer programma´s zien zulke combinaties altijd.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W24,27,29,30,31,32,33,34,37,41,46:B4,9,13,16,17,18,21,22,23,25,26."] 1. 24-20 25x14 2. 29-24 23-28 3. 32x12 17x8 4. 27x18 13x22 5. 34-29 22-28 6. 33x22 21-27 7. 41-36 27x18 8. 31-27 8-12 9. 30-25 12-17 10. 46-41 4-10

Here Cerberus missed a rather surprising draw. Hier miste Cerberus een nogal verassende remise. 24-20! (9-13, 13 x 4) 29-24!(10-14 A) 37-32 (17-21) 41-37 (4-9) 36-31 (9-13) 24-20 =. A (18-23) 25-20! (23-28) 36-31 (28-33) 41-36 =.

Below you can see how TD King won the game. Please notice that after (44-50) White could not play 24-15 because of (14-19, 50-22, 19-23, 21-27).
That is why Cerberus played 41-37 giving TD King the opportunity for a sensational climax of the game. TD King of Ton Tillemans finished at third place, as usual at Olympics he received the bronze medal. The silver medal was for the program Sjende Blyn of Jelle Wiersma.

Computer programms are not aware of beauty, but are playing very beautiful moves occasionally!

The program Maximus of Jan-Jaap van Horssen won the tournament and became the Olympic Champion Computer Draughts 2011. Not all very strong programs participated, but Maximus belongs to the best of the world. The game shown below against the well known program Dam 2.2. does not show any spectacular combination. In the initial position of the next Applet Dam 2.2. should have played (19-23) to survive, but choosed (22-28). Maximus proved that this is loosing without any chance for Black. This is the way strong computer programs play! What Maximus plays looks so easy and obvious, but White could have done it wrong in many ways!

If you want to know more about computer draughts, feel free to ask via email. I will reply anyway, but if required I will send your question to one of the programmers.

Is one of the two the best?

My composition of the first Applet was published on Internet sites, periodicals, etc. It is very well known now in the small world of draughts, including a number of very strong players. The composition seems to be the perfect one for presenting the idea. The initial position is ideal. It was proven that the position could happen in a well played game. Though the number of pieces is very limited, the solution shows a strategic attack by White,a smart defence by Black, but insufficient because of a surprise at the end.
However, is it really the best possible? There might be doubt because of the following Applets, a different way of presenting the idea, with even less pieces.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W28,33,34,35,38:B4,13,14,18,20."] 1. 34-30 14-19 2. 33-29 20-25 3. 30-24 19x30 4. 35x24 4-9 5. 28-23 18-22 6. 23-19 22-28 7. 19x8 9-13 8. 8x19 28-33 9. 24-20 25x34 10. 38x40

As opposed to the one above, the second composition has an interesting, though not thematic, variant containing a false solution with a surprising sacrifice, demonstrated by the next Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W24,29,39,47:B2,3,13,25."] 1. 47-42 2-8 2. 39-33 8-12 3. 29-23 12-17 4. 42-37 3-8 5. 33-28 25-30 6. 24x35 8-12 7. 35-30 13-18 8. 23-19 18-23 9. 37-32 23x14 10. 30-24 12-18 11. 24-19 14x23 12. 28x19 17-21 13. 19-14 18-22 14. 14-10 22-27 15. 32-28 27-31

After 28 x 19 the only one to reach a draw is (17-21). Other moves than 35-30 do not win either. How to win is shown by the third Aplet

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W24,29,39,47:B2,3,13,25."] 1. 47-42 2-8 2. 39-33 8-12 3. 29-23 12-17 4. 42-37 3-8 5. 37-32 17-22 6. 23-18 22-27 7. 18x9 27x20 8. 9-3 8-13 9. 3-12

A nice variant for in a real game, but not thematic. The main thematic variant is played with the last Applet. Playing (17-21) instead of (17-22) leads to an unusual 4 piece opposition.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W24,29,39,47:B2,3,13,25."] 1. 47-42 2-8 2. 39-33 13-18 3. 33-28 8-13 4. 42-38 3-9 5. 28-23 18-22 6. 23-19 22-28 7. 19x8 9-13 8. 8x19 28-33 9. 24-20 25x34 10. 38x40

One of the remarkable things of this composition is that White has to play alternatively with the piece on 47 in the initial position or with the one that starts on 39.
Does it make sense to argue about which of the two compositions is the best? It is easier to like them both. The second one requires a bit more time for fully understanding. It will give a nice feeling finding out why White has to play 42-38 in the main variant, instead of 42-37.

Johan Bastiaannet

Johan Bastiaannet is a very well known endgame composer and expert in that field. He wrote books about it and was very successful in endgame composition contests, in particular those organized in Eastern Europe. He is a supporter of the view of trying to achieve many so called thematic variants in one composition.
Some people might not know that Johan belonged to the best Dutch players in the seventies, with successes in the Dutch National Championships and even a fourth place at the World Championship of 1978/79.
All this resulted in that Johan Bastiaannet is International Grandmaster, both as a player and as draughts composer (of end games).

Johan has sent me a nice endgame for my Internet site. It was composed 26-6-2009. You will find the main variant at the first Applet, with the surprising sacrifice 37-32, 27-22, leading to two thematic finals, after (37-42) and after (38-42).
As might be expected from Johan, the composition contains other thematic variants:
- 6-1 (27-49 or 27-36) 37-32 or 37-31 (x27) 16-11, 1 x 21, 9-4, etc.
- 6-1 (22-28) 9-4 (27-32) 4-31 (32 x 46) 31-37, 16-11, 1 x 27, etc.

Zie hierboven.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,9,16,37:B7,12,22,K27,33."] 1. 6-1 22-28 2. 9-4 27-49 3. 4-27 49x21 4. 16x27 33-38 5. 37-32 28x37 6. 27-22

A good composition, but for the first FMJD Personal World Championship Endgame composition (PWCE) Johan had to do better of course. For all the endgames participating in three categories, the solutions, the points given by the members of the jury and the final result see Eric´s Damsite.
Below two endgames are shown of Category A (no Kings in the initial position). One of Johan Bastiaannet, the other one composed by me. Followed by one more of Johan, this time Category B (Man and Kings).

J. Bastiaannet Category A World Championship 2005

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W7,17,32:B16,26,33,35."] 1. 7-1 33-39 2. 17-11 16x7 3. 1x48 35-40 4. 48-39 40-45 5. 39-6 26-31 6. 32-27 31x22 7. 6x50

According to the jury this end game deserved a very high score, because besides the main variant it has 7 more variants fittng to the definition that a thematic variant should be sharp, or has no more than 1 dual. This is of course an achievement by the composer.
However, in this case all other variants than shown by the Applet have a dual! This is not my personal prefence, so I consider the end game of Johan of Category B, shown below, much better!
I suppose the reader can find all the other variants (as well as each dual) himself.

J.C.R. Bus Category A World Championship 2005

The next one is mine and also Category A, of the PWCE. I first give one of the main variants. Very important is to understand that after 25-20 (24 x 15) 8-3 (29-33) White should not play 3 x 43?? because it is an immediate draw after (4-9) 7-1 (28-32, 33-38) =. So White has to play 3 x 48!! and then the variant (28-32) is chosen.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W7,8,25,45:B4,9,24,28,29,34,35."] 1. 25-20 24x15 2. 8-3 29-33 3. 3x48 28-32 4. 7-2 33-39 5. 48x25 4-9 6. 25x3 32-37 7. 2-24 15-20 8. 3x25 37-41 9. 45-40 35x44 10. 25-39 44x33 11. 24x36

However, there is another important, totally different, variant. We start after White has played 3 x 48 and continue with (15-20).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W7,45,K48:B4,15,28,33,35."] 1... 15-20 2. 7-1 33-38 3. 1-29 28-33 4. 29x15 4-10 5. 15x4 33-39 6. 48x34 38-42 7. 4-22 42-48 8. 22-39

Beautiful variant, but something is wrong! After 7-1 Black can force an amazing draw, more beautiful than many winning variants!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W7,45,K48:B4,15,28,33,35."] 1... 15-20 2. 7-1 28-32 3. 1-7 33-38 4. 7-16 4-10 5. 16-21 35-40 6. 45x34 38-43 7. 21x4 43-49

A very interesting draw, but when the end game does not win it could not get so many points from the jury of the World Championship. So there must be a way to win.You will remember that White has to take 3 x 48 instead of 43. The amazing effect is that, immediately after the next move (15-20), the only winning move is 48-43!!! As opposed to one move before, (4-9) does not lead to a draw, the difference is (4-9) 7-1 (28-32, 33-38) 4-15!.
The Applet starts with the splendid moves 3 x 48!! (15-20) 48-43!!! and continues with the winning variant.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK3,7,45:B4,9,15,28,33,34,35."] 1. 3x48 15-20 2. 48-43 20-24 3. 7-1 24-30 4. 43x25 4-9 5. 25x3 33-38 6. 1-29 38-43 7. 29-38 43x32 8. 3-14 28-33 9. 14x37 33-39 10. 37-32 39-44 11. 32-28 44-49 12. 28-44 49x40 13. 45x34

J. Bastiaannet Category B World Championship 2005

The next world class end game has a very large number of variants and false solutions. However, a lot of these variants and false solutions have a dual or are even not thematic. Anyway, enough interesting variants remain, in particular those shown in the next two Applets. The surprise at the start is that 10-5 does not win. The first Applet contains a lot of nice moves of the White Kings.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W10,18,K43:B17,24,31,33."] 1. 10-4 17-21 2. 43x16 31-36 3. 16-43 36-41 4. 43-32 41-46 5. 32-5 24-30 6. 4-9 46-41 7. 5x46 30-34 8. 9-4 34-40 9. 46-28 33x13 10. 4x45

This is a good start of demonstrating this end game, but the real good variant is the next one. This variant also contains fully sharp sub-variants. For instance:
- 4 (36) 12, 15 (39) 2 (41) 19.
- 4 (36) 12, 15 (29) 32 (34) 42 (41) 46 (39) 33, 2.
The most important thing that has to be understood is that after (36) White has to play the sacrifice 18-12 because 4-15 is a draw by (17-21!).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W10,18,K43:B17,24,31,33."] 1. 10-4 31-36 2. 18-12 17x8 3. 4-15 24-29 4. 43-32 29-34 5. 15x42 34-39 6. 32-16

Three thematic variants at the end:

- (41) 37, 2
- (44) 31, 2
- (43) 49 (41) 37, 3

Drie scherpe varianten tot slot.

Comparing my end game with the last one of Johan you see a difference of style. The first one aims at a very unusual solution with a big surprise. The second one is composed with getting as many thematic variants as possible. Such a fundamental difference is hard to deal with for a jury. However, these two were in a different category of the World Championship so these two end games were not competing directly. They both got very high scores by the jury.
In this article I do not say anything about the place at the ranking or the points given by the individual jury members.
In my view it is not so important and maybe even better not to know to fully enjoy such outstanding end games.

Auke Wiersbrands-Alexei Shwarzgiev

It was round 19, the last round of the World Championship 2013, with 20 players. The games were followed by more than 12.000 people on Internet, half of them from China. About 800 visitors were present at the last round of the tournament, including a number of well known players and draughts composers. The members of the FMJD Board and a number of people of the FMJD Assembly were in another room , because they were discussing a protest of Belarus against a protest of Ukraine.
Most of the visitors were in the demonstration room, where Hein Meijer and Paul Oudshoorn commented the games. However, nobody listened to them when Ron Boommeurs was close to concluding his game against Shang Haiping with a brilliant fully thematic forcing. In particular the first move 46-41 and later the sacrifice 34-30 impressed. See the first Applet.

Shang declared later that the People-Republic of China ordered that their best 8000 players have to study the forcings of Mr. Bus from Germany.
In spite of the win of Ron Boommeurs it was no longer possible for him to become the new World Champion, because Alexei Shwarzgiev and Auke Wiersbrands played against each other in the final round. See the list below after round 18.

1. Auke Wiersbrands, 8 wins, 9 draws, one lost, 25 points.
2. Alexei Shwarzgiev , 7 wins, 10 draws, one lost, 24 points.
3. Ron Boommeurs , 6 wins, 11 draws, one lost, 23 points.

The game of Alexei (White) against Auke gave no advantage for either player, to the satisfaction of Auke. However, the game could still take long. So Auke looked for a way to force the draw that would bring him the World Title. After long and concentrated calculating he concluded that (12-17) would bring the draw soon. Below his main calculations are shown in writing and the most important one by the second Applet.

- (12-17) 35-30 (26-31)=.
- (12-17) 32-27 (3-9) 27-21 (17-22, 18-23. 13 x 11) =.
- (12-17) 28-23 (17-22, 22-27, 26 x 8) 35-30 (13-18) 33-28 (14-19) followed by a combination, that even wins after 42-37.
- (12-17) 28-23 (17-22, 22-27, 26 x 8) 29-23 (13-18, 8 x 17)=.
For one more variant see the Applet.

The commentators showed the same variant of the Applet. After Alexei shrugged his shoulders with a hard to hear sigh and played 28-23 the Dutch visitors in the demonstration room started celebrating that the World title would be won by Auke Wiersbrands.

However, suddenly somebody in the demonstration room shouted: "Kingsrow and Sjende Blyn say that White will win!!". At the same time Auke made the calculation shown by the the third Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W29,33,35,40,42:B3,8,13,14,20."] 1. 35-30 13-18 2. 33-28 14-19 3. 40-35 19-24 4. 30x19 18-23 5. 29x18 8-13 6. 19x8 3x32 7. 35-30

Auke Wiersbrands was shocked by this result of the calculation and even more after Alexei Shwarzgiev had played 35-30, because Auke found that (13-18) was lost in all variants and that (8-12) would lead to a positional disaster.
He concluded that he had to play as shown in the next Applet and then had to make the choice between (8-12) or (13-18).

It was very silent in the demonstration room when the commentators showed all the winning variants, but suddenly when playing one of those variants a very strong player present found a brilliant draw as shown below.
The visitors woke up and joined the analyses actively.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W24,29,33,42:B3,8,13,25."] 1... 8-12 2. 29-23 12-17 3. 42-37 3-8 4. 33-28 25-30 5. 24x35 8-12 6. 35-30 13-18 7. 23-19 18-23 8. 37-32 23x14 9. 30-24 12-18 10. 24-19 14x23 11. 28x19 17-21 12. 19-14 18-22 13. 14-10 22-27 14. 32-28 27-31

A superb draw. Please notice that after 28 x 19 only (17-21) is not loosing and that after 24 x 35 (8-12) white cannot win by 37-31 either.
Auke did not see all of this, but he saw something far more important. After (3-8) White should not play 33-28, but wins by 37-32 as in the sixth Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W24,29,33,42:B3,8,13,25."] 1... 8-12 2. 29-23 12-17 3. 42-37 3-8 4. 37-32 17-22 5. 23-18 22-27 6. 18x9 27x20 7. 9-3 8-13 8. 3-12

Auke did not give up. He was tired, but calculated anyway that (13-18) 33-28 (8-13) 28-23 (18-22) 23-19 (25-30) or 42-37(22-27) 23-19 (25-30) would still give the so much needed draw.

Auke gaf niet op. Hij was moe, maar berekende toch dat (13-18) 33-28 (8-13) 28-23 (18-22) 23-19 (25-30) or 42-37(22-27) 23-19 (25-30) toch nog de zo begeerde remise gaf.

However, it went differently. Auke was schocked by the move 42-38 !! The Applet shows the final moves of the game, though Auke congratulated Alexei already before he played (28-33).

Later that night after the ceremonies, a draughts composer joined a table with Auke and Alexei. He said to them: " Maybe you have noticed that after 28-23 it is still a draw". Yes, said Alexei I was aware of that when I played 28-23, but it was the only chance to win. Then the rescue variant was blind-played for Auke. The same as the last Applet.

This is how Auke missed the World Title, he needed a lot of beer that night!!
