Most of the visitors were in the demonstration room, where Hein Meijer and Paul Oudshoorn commented the games. However, nobody listened to them when Ron Boommeurs was close to concluding his game against Shang Haiping with a brilliant fully thematic forcing. In particular the first move 46-41 and later the sacrifice 34-30 impressed. See the first Applet.

Het was ronde 19, de laatste ronde van het Wereldkampioenschap 2013, met 20 spelers. De partijen werden gevolgd door meer dan 12.000 mensen op Internet, waarvan de helft uit China. Ongeveer 800 mensen waren voor de laatste ronde naar de toernooi-zalen gekomen, waaronder een aantal bekende spelers en problemisten. Het FMJD Bestuur en een aantal leden van de Algemene Vergadering zaten in een ander vertrek, om een protest van Wit-Rusland tegen een protest van de Ukraine te bespreken.
De meeste toeschouwers waren in de demonstratie-zaal waar Hein Meijer en Paul Oudshoorn commentaar bij de partijen gaven. Echter niemand luisterde naar ze toen Ron Bommmeurs bezig was zijn partij tegen Shang Haipin met een briljante volkomen scherpe forcing af te sluiten. In het bijzonder de eerste zet 46-41 en later het offer 34-30 maakten indruk. Zie de eerste Applet.
Shang declared later that the People-Republic of China ordered that their best 8000 players have to study the forcings of Mr. Bus from Germany.
In spite of the win of Ron Boommeurs it was no longer possible for him to become the new World Champion, because Alexei Shwarzgiev and Auke Wiersbrands played against each other in the final round. See the list below after round 18.
Later verklaarde Shang dat de Volksrepubliek China hun beste 8000 spelers heeft opgedragen de forcings van Mr. Bus uit Duitsland te bestuderen.
Het was overigens niet meer mogelijk dat Ron Boommeurs Wereldkampioen zou worden, omdat in de laatste ronde Alexei Shwarzgiev en Auke Wiersbrands tegen elkaar speelden. Zie de stand na ronde 18.

The game of Alexei (White) against Auke gave no advantage for either player, to the satisfaction of Auke. However, the game could still take long. So Auke looked for a way to force the draw that would bring him the World Title. After long and concentrated calculating he concluded that (12-17) would bring the draw soon. Below his main calculations are shown in writing and the most important one by the second Applet.
Die partij ging gelijk op tot tevredenheid van Auke Wiersbrands, behalve dan dat deze partij nog lang kon duren. Auke met zwart zocht dus naar een gelegenheid om snel het materiaal te dunnen om zodoende de zo vurig begeerde remise te bereiken die de Wereldtitel zou brengen. Na lang rekenen kwam hij tot de conclusie dat (12-17) snel tot remise zou leiden.

The commentators showed the same variant of the Applet. After Alexei shrugged his shoulders with a hard to hear sigh and played 28-23 the Dutch visitors in the demonstration room started celebrating that the World title would be won by Auke Wiersbrands.
De commentatoren lieten dezelfde variant zien als die van de Applet. Nadat Alexei zijn schouders ophaalde met een nauwelijks hoorbare zucht en 28-23 speelde begonnen de Nederlanders in de demonstratiezaal te vieren dat Auke Wiersbrands de nieuwe Wereldkampioen zou worden.
However, suddenly somebody in the demonstration room shouted: "Kingsrow and Sjende Blyn say that White will win!!". At the same time Auke made the calculation shown by the the third Applet.
Echter, plotseling riep iemand in de demonstratiezaal: " Volgens Kingsrow en Sjende Blyn wint wit!!". Op hetzelfde moment berekende Auke de variant die de derde Applet laat zien.

Auke Wiersbrands was shocked by this result of the calculation and even more after Alexei Shwarzgiev had played 35-30, because Auke found that (13-18) was lost in all variants and that (8-12) would lead to a positional disaster.
He concluded that he had to play as shown in the next Applet and then had to make the choice between (8-12) or (13-18).
Auke Wiersbrands was hevig geschrokken door het resultaat van deze berekening. Het werd er niet beter op toen Alexei Shwarzgiev 35-30 gespeeld had, want Auke stelde vast dat (13-18) in alle varianten verloren was en dat (8-12) tot een positionele catastrofe zou leiden. Hij concludeerde dat hij zo moest spelen als de volgende Applet en dan moest kiezen tussen (13-18) of (8-12).

It was very silent in the demonstration room when the commentators showed all the winning variants, but suddenly when playing one of those variants a very strong player present found a brilliant draw as shown below.
The visitors woke up and joined the analyses actively.
Het was heel stil in de demonstratiezaal toen de commentatoren al de winnende varianten toonden. Plotseling echter toen een van de varianten werd gedemonstreerd vond een aanwezige zeer sterke speler een fantastische remise, zoals hieronder aangegeven. De zaal werd weer wakker en men analyseerde luid mee.

A superb draw. Please notice that after 28 x 19 only (17-21) is not loosing and that after 24 x 35 (8-12) white cannot win by 37-31 either.
Auke did not see all of this, but he saw something far more important. After (3-8) White should not play 33-28, but wins by 37-32 as in the sixth Applet.
Een geweldige remise. Merk s.v.p. op dat na 28 x 19 alleen (17-21) tot remise leidt en dat na 24 x 35 (8-12) wit met 37-31 ook niet winnen kan.
Auke zag dit niet, hij zag iets veel belangrijkers n.l. dat wit na (3-8) geen 33-28, maar 37-32 moet spelen en dat het dan zo verliest als in de zesde Applet.

Auke did not give up. He was tired, but calculated anyway that (13-18) 33-28 (8-13) 28-23 (18-22) 23-19 (25-30) or 42-37(22-27) 23-19 (25-30) would still give the so much needed draw.
Auke gaf niet op. Hij was moe, maar berekende toch dat (13-18) 33-28 (8-13) 28-23 (18-22) 23-19 (25-30) or 42-37(22-27) 23-19 (25-30) toch nog de zo begeerde remise gaf.
However, it went differently. Auke was schocked by the move 42-38 !! The Applet shows the final moves of the game, though Auke congratulated Alexei already before he played (28-33).
Het liep echter anders. Auke werd verbijsterd door de zet 42-38 !! Het liep zo als de voorlaatste Applet aangeeft, zij het dat hij Alexei al feliciteerde voordat hij (28-33) speelde.

Later that night after the ceremonies, a draughts composer joined a table with Auke and Alexei. He said to them: " Maybe you have noticed that after 28-23 it is still a draw". Yes, said Alexei I was aware of that when I played 28-23, but it was the only chance to win. Then the rescue variant was blind-played for Auke. The same as the last Applet.
Later op de avond, na de huldigingen, zette een problemist zich aan een tafel met Auke en Alexei. Hij zei tegen ze: " Mogelijk is het jullie opgevallen dat het na 28-23 nog steeds remise is". Ja, zei Alexei ik was mij dat bewust toen ik 28-23 speelde, maar het was de enige kans om te winnen. De remise variant werd vervolgens blind gespeeld voor Auke. Dezelfde variant als van de laatse Applet.
