Is one of the two the best?

My composition of the first Applet was published on Internet sites, periodicals, etc. It is very well known now in the small world of draughts, including a number of very strong players. The composition seems to be the perfect one for presenting the idea. The initial position is ideal. It was proven that the position could happen in a well played game. Though the number of pieces is very limited, the solution shows a strategic attack by White,a smart defence by Black, but insufficient because of a surprise at the end.
However, is it really the best possible? There might be doubt because of the following Applets, a different way of presenting the idea, with even less pieces.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W28,33,34,35,38:B4,13,14,18,20."] 1. 34-30 14-19 2. 33-29 20-25 3. 30-24 19x30 4. 35x24 4-9 5. 28-23 18-22 6. 23-19 22-28 7. 19x8 9-13 8. 8x19 28-33 9. 24-20 25x34 10. 38x40

As opposed to the one above, the second composition has an interesting, though not thematic, variant containing a false solution with a surprising sacrifice, demonstrated by the next Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W24,29,39,47:B2,3,13,25."] 1. 47-42 2-8 2. 39-33 8-12 3. 29-23 12-17 4. 42-37 3-8 5. 33-28 25-30 6. 24x35 8-12 7. 35-30 13-18 8. 23-19 18-23 9. 37-32 23x14 10. 30-24 12-18 11. 24-19 14x23 12. 28x19 17-21 13. 19-14 18-22 14. 14-10 22-27 15. 32-28 27-31

After 28 x 19 the only one to reach a draw is (17-21). Other moves than 35-30 do not win either. How to win is shown by the third Aplet

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W24,29,39,47:B2,3,13,25."] 1. 47-42 2-8 2. 39-33 8-12 3. 29-23 12-17 4. 42-37 3-8 5. 37-32 17-22 6. 23-18 22-27 7. 18x9 27x20 8. 9-3 8-13 9. 3-12

A nice variant for in a real game, but not thematic. The main thematic variant is played with the last Applet. Playing (17-21) instead of (17-22) leads to an unusual 4 piece opposition.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W24,29,39,47:B2,3,13,25."] 1. 47-42 2-8 2. 39-33 13-18 3. 33-28 8-13 4. 42-38 3-9 5. 28-23 18-22 6. 23-19 22-28 7. 19x8 9-13 8. 8x19 28-33 9. 24-20 25x34 10. 38x40

One of the remarkable things of this composition is that White has to play alternatively with the piece on 47 in the initial position or with the one that starts on 39.
Does it make sense to argue about which of the two compositions is the best? It is easier to like them both. The second one requires a bit more time for fully understanding. It will give a nice feeling finding out why White has to play 42-38 in the main variant, instead of 42-37.

Johan Bastiaannet

Johan Bastiaannet is a very well known endgame composer and expert in that field. He wrote books about it and was very successful in endgame composition contests, in particular those organized in Eastern Europe. He is a supporter of the view of trying to achieve many so called thematic variants in one composition.
Some people might not know that Johan belonged to the best Dutch players in the seventies, with successes in the Dutch National Championships and even a fourth place at the World Championship of 1978/79.
All this resulted in that Johan Bastiaannet is International Grandmaster, both as a player and as draughts composer (of end games).

Johan has sent me a nice endgame for my Internet site. It was composed 26-6-2009. You will find the main variant at the first Applet, with the surprising sacrifice 37-32, 27-22, leading to two thematic finals, after (37-42) and after (38-42).
As might be expected from Johan, the composition contains other thematic variants:
- 6-1 (27-49 or 27-36) 37-32 or 37-31 (x27) 16-11, 1 x 21, 9-4, etc.
- 6-1 (22-28) 9-4 (27-32) 4-31 (32 x 46) 31-37, 16-11, 1 x 27, etc.

Zie hierboven.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,9,16,37:B7,12,22,K27,33."] 1. 6-1 22-28 2. 9-4 27-49 3. 4-27 49x21 4. 16x27 33-38 5. 37-32 28x37 6. 27-22

A good composition, but for the first FMJD Personal World Championship Endgame composition (PWCE) Johan had to do better of course. For all the endgames participating in three categories, the solutions, the points given by the members of the jury and the final result see Eric´s Damsite.
Below two endgames are shown of Category A (no Kings in the initial position). One of Johan Bastiaannet, the other one composed by me. Followed by one more of Johan, this time Category B (Man and Kings).

J. Bastiaannet Category A World Championship 2005

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W7,17,32:B16,26,33,35."] 1. 7-1 33-39 2. 17-11 16x7 3. 1x48 35-40 4. 48-39 40-45 5. 39-6 26-31 6. 32-27 31x22 7. 6x50

According to the jury this end game deserved a very high score, because besides the main variant it has 7 more variants fittng to the definition that a thematic variant should be sharp, or has no more than 1 dual. This is of course an achievement by the composer.
However, in this case all other variants than shown by the Applet have a dual! This is not my personal prefence, so I consider the end game of Johan of Category B, shown below, much better!
I suppose the reader can find all the other variants (as well as each dual) himself.

J.C.R. Bus Category A World Championship 2005

The next one is mine and also Category A, of the PWCE. I first give one of the main variants. Very important is to understand that after 25-20 (24 x 15) 8-3 (29-33) White should not play 3 x 43?? because it is an immediate draw after (4-9) 7-1 (28-32, 33-38) =. So White has to play 3 x 48!! and then the variant (28-32) is chosen.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W7,8,25,45:B4,9,24,28,29,34,35."] 1. 25-20 24x15 2. 8-3 29-33 3. 3x48 28-32 4. 7-2 33-39 5. 48x25 4-9 6. 25x3 32-37 7. 2-24 15-20 8. 3x25 37-41 9. 45-40 35x44 10. 25-39 44x33 11. 24x36

However, there is another important, totally different, variant. We start after White has played 3 x 48 and continue with (15-20).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W7,45,K48:B4,15,28,33,35."] 1... 15-20 2. 7-1 33-38 3. 1-29 28-33 4. 29x15 4-10 5. 15x4 33-39 6. 48x34 38-42 7. 4-22 42-48 8. 22-39

Beautiful variant, but something is wrong! After 7-1 Black can force an amazing draw, more beautiful than many winning variants!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W7,45,K48:B4,15,28,33,35."] 1... 15-20 2. 7-1 28-32 3. 1-7 33-38 4. 7-16 4-10 5. 16-21 35-40 6. 45x34 38-43 7. 21x4 43-49

A very interesting draw, but when the end game does not win it could not get so many points from the jury of the World Championship. So there must be a way to win.You will remember that White has to take 3 x 48 instead of 43. The amazing effect is that, immediately after the next move (15-20), the only winning move is 48-43!!! As opposed to one move before, (4-9) does not lead to a draw, the difference is (4-9) 7-1 (28-32, 33-38) 4-15!.
The Applet starts with the splendid moves 3 x 48!! (15-20) 48-43!!! and continues with the winning variant.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK3,7,45:B4,9,15,28,33,34,35."] 1. 3x48 15-20 2. 48-43 20-24 3. 7-1 24-30 4. 43x25 4-9 5. 25x3 33-38 6. 1-29 38-43 7. 29-38 43x32 8. 3-14 28-33 9. 14x37 33-39 10. 37-32 39-44 11. 32-28 44-49 12. 28-44 49x40 13. 45x34

J. Bastiaannet Category B World Championship 2005

The next world class end game has a very large number of variants and false solutions. However, a lot of these variants and false solutions have a dual or are even not thematic. Anyway, enough interesting variants remain, in particular those shown in the next two Applets. The surprise at the start is that 10-5 does not win. The first Applet contains a lot of nice moves of the White Kings.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W10,18,K43:B17,24,31,33."] 1. 10-4 17-21 2. 43x16 31-36 3. 16-43 36-41 4. 43-32 41-46 5. 32-5 24-30 6. 4-9 46-41 7. 5x46 30-34 8. 9-4 34-40 9. 46-28 33x13 10. 4x45

This is a good start of demonstrating this end game, but the real good variant is the next one. This variant also contains fully sharp sub-variants. For instance:
- 4 (36) 12, 15 (39) 2 (41) 19.
- 4 (36) 12, 15 (29) 32 (34) 42 (41) 46 (39) 33, 2.
The most important thing that has to be understood is that after (36) White has to play the sacrifice 18-12 because 4-15 is a draw by (17-21!).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W10,18,K43:B17,24,31,33."] 1. 10-4 31-36 2. 18-12 17x8 3. 4-15 24-29 4. 43-32 29-34 5. 15x42 34-39 6. 32-16

Three thematic variants at the end:

- (41) 37, 2
- (44) 31, 2
- (43) 49 (41) 37, 3

Drie scherpe varianten tot slot.

Comparing my end game with the last one of Johan you see a difference of style. The first one aims at a very unusual solution with a big surprise. The second one is composed with getting as many thematic variants as possible. Such a fundamental difference is hard to deal with for a jury. However, these two were in a different category of the World Championship so these two end games were not competing directly. They both got very high scores by the jury.
In this article I do not say anything about the place at the ranking or the points given by the individual jury members.
In my view it is not so important and maybe even better not to know to fully enjoy such outstanding end games.

Auke Wiersbrands-Alexei Shwarzgiev

It was round 19, the last round of the World Championship 2013, with 20 players. The games were followed by more than 12.000 people on Internet, half of them from China. About 800 visitors were present at the last round of the tournament, including a number of well known players and draughts composers. The members of the FMJD Board and a number of people of the FMJD Assembly were in another room , because they were discussing a protest of Belarus against a protest of Ukraine.
Most of the visitors were in the demonstration room, where Hein Meijer and Paul Oudshoorn commented the games. However, nobody listened to them when Ron Boommeurs was close to concluding his game against Shang Haiping with a brilliant fully thematic forcing. In particular the first move 46-41 and later the sacrifice 34-30 impressed. See the first Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W22,25,30,33,39,46:B3,10,12,15,19,23."] 1. 46-41 3-8 2. 30-24 19x30 3. 25x34 23-28 4. 22-18 12x23 5. 33x22 15-20 6. 22-17 23-28 7. 17-11 8-12 8. 11-6 20-24 9. 34-30 24x35 10. 39-34 28-32 11. 6-1 32-37 12. 1x5 37x46 13. 34-29 35-40 14. 29-23 46x14 15. 5x45

Shang declared later that the People-Republic of China ordered that their best 8000 players have to study the forcings of Mr. Bus from Germany.
In spite of the win of Ron Boommeurs it was no longer possible for him to become the new World Champion, because Alexei Shwarzgiev and Auke Wiersbrands played against each other in the final round. See the list below after round 18.

1. Auke Wiersbrands, 8 wins, 9 draws, one lost, 25 points.
2. Alexei Shwarzgiev , 7 wins, 10 draws, one lost, 24 points.
3. Ron Boommeurs , 6 wins, 11 draws, one lost, 23 points.

The game of Alexei (White) against Auke gave no advantage for either player, to the satisfaction of Auke. However, the game could still take long. So Auke looked for a way to force the draw that would bring him the World Title. After long and concentrated calculating he concluded that (12-17) would bring the draw soon. Below his main calculations are shown in writing and the most important one by the second Applet.

- (12-17) 35-30 (26-31)=.
- (12-17) 32-27 (3-9) 27-21 (17-22, 18-23. 13 x 11) =.
- (12-17) 28-23 (17-22, 22-27, 26 x 8) 35-30 (13-18) 33-28 (14-19) followed by a combination, that even wins after 42-37.
- (12-17) 28-23 (17-22, 22-27, 26 x 8) 29-23 (13-18, 8 x 17)=.
For one more variant see the Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W28,29,32,33,35,40,42:B3,12,13,14,18,20,26."] 1... 12-17 2. 28-23 17-22 3. 23x12 22-27 4. 32x21 26x8 5. 33-28 14-19 6. 28-22 19-24 7. 29-23 13-18 8. 22x2 20-25 9. 2x30 25x45

The commentators showed the same variant of the Applet. After Alexei shrugged his shoulders with a hard to hear sigh and played 28-23 the Dutch visitors in the demonstration room started celebrating that the World title would be won by Auke Wiersbrands.

However, suddenly somebody in the demonstration room shouted: "Kingsrow and Sjende Blyn say that White will win!!". At the same time Auke made the calculation shown by the the third Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W29,33,35,40,42:B3,8,13,14,20."] 1. 35-30 13-18 2. 33-28 14-19 3. 40-35 19-24 4. 30x19 18-23 5. 29x18 8-13 6. 19x8 3x32 7. 35-30

Auke Wiersbrands was shocked by this result of the calculation and even more after Alexei Shwarzgiev had played 35-30, because Auke found that (13-18) was lost in all variants and that (8-12) would lead to a positional disaster.
He concluded that he had to play as shown in the next Applet and then had to make the choice between (8-12) or (13-18).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W29,30,33,40,42:B3,8,13,14,20."] 1... 20-25 2. 30-24 14-19 3. 40-35 19x30 4. 35x24

It was very silent in the demonstration room when the commentators showed all the winning variants, but suddenly when playing one of those variants a very strong player present found a brilliant draw as shown below.
The visitors woke up and joined the analyses actively.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W24,29,33,42:B3,8,13,25."] 1... 8-12 2. 29-23 12-17 3. 42-37 3-8 4. 33-28 25-30 5. 24x35 8-12 6. 35-30 13-18 7. 23-19 18-23 8. 37-32 23x14 9. 30-24 12-18 10. 24-19 14x23 11. 28x19 17-21 12. 19-14 18-22 13. 14-10 22-27 14. 32-28 27-31

A superb draw. Please notice that after 28 x 19 only (17-21) is not loosing and that after 24 x 35 (8-12) white cannot win by 37-31 either.
Auke did not see all of this, but he saw something far more important. After (3-8) White should not play 33-28, but wins by 37-32 as in the sixth Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W24,29,33,42:B3,8,13,25."] 1... 8-12 2. 29-23 12-17 3. 42-37 3-8 4. 37-32 17-22 5. 23-18 22-27 6. 18x9 27x20 7. 9-3 8-13 8. 3-12

Auke did not give up. He was tired, but calculated anyway that (13-18) 33-28 (8-13) 28-23 (18-22) 23-19 (25-30) or 42-37(22-27) 23-19 (25-30) would still give the so much needed draw.

Auke gaf niet op. Hij was moe, maar berekende toch dat (13-18) 33-28 (8-13) 28-23 (18-22) 23-19 (25-30) or 42-37(22-27) 23-19 (25-30) toch nog de zo begeerde remise gaf.

However, it went differently. Auke was schocked by the move 42-38 !! The Applet shows the final moves of the game, though Auke congratulated Alexei already before he played (28-33).

Later that night after the ceremonies, a draughts composer joined a table with Auke and Alexei. He said to them: " Maybe you have noticed that after 28-23 it is still a draw". Yes, said Alexei I was aware of that when I played 28-23, but it was the only chance to win. Then the rescue variant was blind-played for Auke. The same as the last Applet.

Better and much better than the First Prize, beter en veel Beter dan de eerste prijs

In 1967 I reached the First Prize of Category A (miniatures), of the KvD Championship. Two years later a committee consisting of Ir. J. Viergever, P. v.d. Kwartel and me as Chairman of the KvD, (re)-formulated the "Scherpe Regels" of Gortmans /Monsma and explained them somewhat in detail. Though the committee made some moderating remarks and was fully aware of that ideas might change over the years, those SR were applied by the draughts composers all over the world very much like a law for more than forty years. These rules are still considered valid to a very large extent today.
In 1967, without any good draughts program available, many "positional" second solutions remained unnoticed or were considered irrelevant.
That was lucky for me, because my First Prize miniature contained a very clear positional second solution by playing 34-29, but nobody noticed that for many years.
The initial position and the main solution with a surprising final are shown by the first Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W22,26,28,33,34,37,39:B11,12,14,17,19,21,24."] 1. 28-23 19x28 2. 22-18 12x23 3. 33x22 17x28 4. 26x6 14-19 5. 34-30 24x35 6. 6-1 28-32 7. 1x40 35x33 8. 37x39

The end is very beautiful, but a positional second solution reduces the quality of the composition of course. At that moment of time in 1967 I already had a better one, though not a miniature at all. In any case 44-40 as first move is not winning.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W15,20,24,26,35,37,39,44,46,48,50:B4,11,13,17,21,23,28,29,32,33,45."] 1. 15-10 4x15 2. 44-40 45x43 3. 48x39 33x44 4. 24x22 17x28 5. 26x6 15x24 6. 50x39 32x41 7. 46x37 13-19 8. 35-30 24x35 9. 6-1 28-32 10. 1x40 35x33 11. 37x39

This large one looks good enough, but recently I tried improving it with a minimum of material. The result can be seen on the very first article I wrote on this blog. You will find it under "oudere berichten". No doubt that the one published there is an improvemnet compared with the original miniature of 1967. However, later I found a very much better one as shown in the next Applets.

16-11 as first moves fails, an easy draw for Black. The first Applet shows a very interesting completely sharp variant. However, there is a big surprise. The third Applet of this very special composition leads to the same end of the original of 1967.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W16,26,32,35,44,48:B18,19,22,23,24,25."] 1. 32-27 22x31 2. 26x37 24-29 3. 16-11 29-34 4. 11-7 34-40 5. 48-43 40x38 6. 35-30 25x34 7. 7-2 38-42 8. 2x48 42x31 9. 48x26 23-28 10. 26-3 28-33 11. 3-9 18-23 12. 9-14 23-29 13. 14-20 29-34 14. 20x38 34-40 15. 38-33 40-45 16. 33-50

The surprise is that this variant contains another sharp solution, even with more than one thematic variant. After the sacrifice 35-30, White can also sacrifice another one with 37-32, 7-2. After (21-26) this leads to the same final, but after (23-29) there are a few more different thematic variants, as you can find out yourself. This is a remarkable effect, it is a second solution of a variant, but so beautiful that it can also be considered as an additional aspect of beauty of the composition!

The next Applet gives the main variant, leading to the original final.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W16,26,32,35,44,48:B18,19,22,23,24,25."] 1. 32-27 22x31 2. 26x37 25-30 3. 16-11 30-34 4. 44-39 34x43 5. 48x39 18-22 6. 11-7 22-28 7. 35-30 24x35 8. 7-1 28-32 9. 1x40 35x33 10. 37x39

To be complete please notice that after 11-7 Black can also play (22-27). The sacrifice 35-30, 7-1 then fails, but another sacrifice 37-32, 7-2 wins!

This composition is incomparably better than the price winning one of 1967. However, when the jury did not see the second solution of the one of 1967, would they have fully understand this composition of 2011??

Missed opportunities of the World Championship 2011

Below a number of the most interesting positions during Wch 2011 where the opportunity to win was missed. Two nice combinations, one at the start of this article, the other one at the end. Three end games in between, with missed opportunities by both players.

Roel Boomstra missed a beautiful forcing in round 18 against Getmanski. He actually played 42-38? though it is quite clear that after 37-31, 42 x 31 Black is forced to play (21-26). All other moves are lost either by a simple combination or by 28-22 followed by 31-26, if not directly.
Obviously Boomstra did not see the combination after (21-26), though for composers it is a very well known idea. Studying compositions would benefit his playing.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W25,27,28,32,33,37,39,40,42,44,48:B6,8,9,10,16,18,19,21,23,24,26."] 1. 37-31 26x37 2. 42x31 21-26 3. 27-21 16x29 4. 40-35 26x37 5. 44-40 23x32 6. 48-42 37x48 7. 39-34 48x30 8. 25x5

The second example is from round 13, Guntis Valneris-Alexander Mogilianski.
First is shown how Mogilianski missed a surprising and complicated draw. He played (18-23?) instead of (44-50!) 16-11 (18-22!!). See the Applet for the analyses. Each move of Black till 8-2! is the only one reaching the draw!

Hij speelde (18-23?) i.p.v. (44-50!) 16-11 (18-22!!).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W7,16,17,27,37:B18,26,44."] 1... 44-50 2. 16-11 18-22 3. 27x18 50-28 4. 7-2 28x41 5. 2-24 26-31 6. 24-47 41-19 7. 11-7 19-8 8. 18-12 8-2

Valneris played well until move 67 of the game (move 5 of the Applet). Then he should have played for example 30-25 to win, but played 16-11 ??. The Applet shows the way Mogilianski forced the draw for which he got the FMJD price for the best played end game.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W7,16,17,27,37:B18,26,44."] 1... 18-23 2. 7-2 23-29 3. 2-30 44-50 4. 27-22 50-44 5. 16-11 44-35 6. 30-48 35-19 7. 48-42 19x41 8. 42x15 41-14 9. 22-18 26-31 10. 11-6 31-37 11. 15-47 14-3 12. 18-12 3-9 13. 12-8 9-36 14. 8-3 37-41 15. 17-12 41-46 16. 6-1 36-18 17. 12x23 46x5

Another real end game battle was Schwarzman-Buzinsky in the very last round of the Wch. The Applet starts with 27-22 (28-33??). It is not so easy to see that (28-33) is loosing while (28-32)remains the draw. In order to understand this end game we have to look at the position after the 6th move 7-1 of the Applet. With Black on 33, White can prevent (30-34) by playing 23-19! (34-39) 1-6! clearly winning. This is not the case when Black had played (28-32).
After 7-1 (30-35) Schwarzman should have continued with 1-6! (33-38) 6-44! and the win is guaranteed. However he played as shown in the Applet, with a for Schwarzman disappointing draw.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W16,27,30,31,34,35:B17,20,23,25,28."] 1. 27-22 28-33 2. 22x11 23-29 3. 34x23 25x34 4. 35-30 34x25 5. 11-7 25-30 6. 7-1 30-35 7. 23-18 35-40 8. 1-6 33-38 9. 18-13 40-45 10. 13-9 38-42 11. 6-50 42-48 12. 31-26 20-24 13. 9-4 24-29 14. 4-22 29-34 15. 22-44 48-42 16. 16-11 42-24 17. 44-40 24-29 18. 40-49 29-24 19. 11-7 24-35 20. 26-21 34-39 21. 50x6 35-8 22. 21-16 45-50 23. 7-2 8-17 24. 6x22 50x17

At least as thrilling was the battle between Ndjofang and Georgiev, round 14. With a win Ndjofang would come very close to Georgiev on the list of the competition. Ndjofang played 15-33 at the start position of the first Applet below. After (46-41) 33 x 6 (41-36) 6-22 (12-17) Black does not have so much to fear. However, Ndjofang prepared a very beautiful trap for Georgiev, who has to prove his World Championship capabiltities at that moment. Otherwise Ndjofang would have reached a winning 4 x 2 end game, because Black cannot prevent forever 15-10 with a second White King.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK15,25,26,27,35,48:B9,12,13,16,17,K46."] 1. 15-33 46-41 2. 33x6 41-36 3. 26-21 36x18 4. 6-33 16x27 5. 33-24 27-32 6. 24x38 18-23 7. 38-27 9-14 8. 27-38 23-41 9. 38-20 14-19 10. 20-47 41-32 11. 25-20 19-23 12. 20-15 23-28 13. 47-24 32-46 14. 24-29 28-32 15. 29-42

Georgiev has a lot of knowledge of 4 x 2 end games and saw the trap prepared by Ndjofang. However, the next moves showed a number of serious mistakes by both Grandmasters!I comment the moves as shown in the Applet after the text in Dutch. Comment between / /.

15-33 (46-23) 33 x 6 (23-45??)/(23-18!)=/ 6-50?? / 6-33! (14) 24 (19) 38 w+/ (12-18??) /(45-18!)=/.

So we see that Georgiev misses the draw, immediately followed by Ndjofang missing the win, immediately followed by Georgiev missing the draw again.
However, the climax came at the and of the game shown by the Applet. Ndjofang thought he was in a time squeeze and played the terrible move 27-22?? instead of 30-25, that would have prevented the Black King to move. Georgiev took the chance and was from that moment on with his outstanding talent very close to be sure of his fifth World Title.

Mourodoullo Amrillaev played a very good tournament and became Vice-Worldchampion. One of his victories was against Buzinsky. In the start position of the Applet he played 34-29, a winning move. However, he could have done it far more quicker and more beautiful. One of the most interesting aspects is that this combination is only correct because White can take the capture 3 x 8!!

An interesting, well-organized World Championship, with a clear winner. It is a good thing for draughts that even the strongest players make mistakes occasionally. However, it would be even better when more use would be made of the opportunities to win.

Nicest win of World Championship 2011

Round 13 of the Wch 2011 included Erdenebileg Dul (Mongolia)- Edvard Buzinsky.
The organizers as well as Dul himself can be satisfied with his playing during this tournament.
Below I present the vital part of this game in a special way. You will see three Applets with the same start position. This saves me some work, but the main reason is that I show you three different ways of playing from that moment on, where Dul played 38-32. It is true that 39-34 would have been much better, but I do not show that here.
First I show you a dream, that is what I would have played against Dul, with a very strange move (4-10) at first sight.

Second I show you what Buzinsky has calculated by playing (36-41), that was his dream so to say.

Finally we will be back in reality and that is how Dul presented a very big surprise for Buzinsky.

All three are quite unusual variants.

That was a narrow escape for Dul. 4 x 36 is better of course, but also a draw. Next is how Buzinsky thought forcing a draw

Nice idea, but Dul found a brilliant win after (36-41).

The move 3-12!! crowns this excellent forcing.

Grandmasters, very good and terrible moves

The World Championship 2011 is at the moment that I write this about halfway. Looking for nice fragments close to the end of the game I was pleased with Buzinsky-Baljakin. As usual the forced win of Alexander Baljakin starts after a failure of Buzinsky, but the way how Alexander profits is a perfect example of an efficient win. A fast reduction of the number of pieces leading to a position winning without any doubt. It is very likely that Baljakin calculated the complete variant before (19-23) or even earlier.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W21,26,28,29,31,33,36,38,45,48:B3,11,12,15,17,18,19,20,22,24."] 1. 38-32 11-16 2. 32-27 20-25 3. 29x20 15x24 4. 48-42 19-23 5. 28x30 25x34 6. 45-40 34x45 7. 33-29 22-28 8. 27-22 18x27 9. 21x23 45-50 10. 29-24 16-21 11. 24-20 12-18 12. 23x12 17x8 13. 26x17 50x11 14. 20-15 3-9

A beautiful kind of forcing win, but there was no reason at all for Buzinsky playing 38-32. Looking at other Buzinsky games during WC 2011, I found that he missed two very easy wins, against Valneris and Gantwarg. Together with the Baljakin game Buzinsky could have had 3 points more, leading to a position high on the list. The next Applet is of round 3, Valneris-Buzinsky, where Buzinsky plays the terrible move(14-20),instead of the easy winnig (24-29) as shown by the Applet. Buzinsky really played a terrible move, because (18-23) wins even more easily!!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W26,30,31,35,36,37,43,46:B14,16,17,18,19,22,24,27."] 1... 24-29 2. 43-38 29-33 3. 38x29 27-32 4. 37x28 22x24 5. 46-41 24-29 6. 41-37 29-33 7. 37-32 33-39 8. 32-27 17-22 9. 26-21 39-44 10. 21-17 22x11 11. 27-21 16x27 12. 31x24 44-50

The next one, round 6 Gantwarg-Buzinsky, contains not understandable bad moves from both sides. Gantwarg has an inferior position, but that is insufficient reason for playing 40-34?? However, Buzinsky replies with (13-18!) 34-29 (25-30??) leading to a draw. It is almost a waste spending an Applet on it, so easy is the missed combination.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,27,32,33,35,37,38,40,47,48:B2,4,7,11,12,13,14,17,24,25."] 1. 40-34 13-18 2. 34-29 24-30 3. 35x24 14-19 4. 24x22 17x39

The above might give the reader the impression that Edvard Buzinsky is not a strong player. However, that is not my intention and not my opinion. Buzinsky is a strong player with a high rating and he is also a composer of interesting practical combinations, published in books. He is also able of winning against Gantwarg. See the next two Applets with a fragment of the European Championship 2008 in Tallinn.
Buzinsky has the better position also in this case, but Gantwarg could have made it easier for himself by playing 30-25(19-24)43-39. This forces Black to play (12-17) or (1-7 or 6) and the draw is guaranteed.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W21,26,27,30,43,44:B1,12,18,19,23,28."] 1. 43-39 19-24 2. 30x19 23x14 3. 44-40 14-20 4. 21-16 12-17 5. 27-21 17-22 6. 16-11 28-32

What Gantwarg is doing next is very difficult to understand. Every draughts player makes mistakes and that is fine because otherwise we would only see draws. However in this case 21-16 is so obviously lost that it seems that Gantwarg did not calculate at all. It is so obvious because there is no doubt whatsoever what Black will play. So calculating is extremely easy in this case. The alternative 21-17 leads to a draw, without much complcations.
After 21-16 Buzinsky is practically forced to win!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W11,21,26,39,40:B1,18,20,22,32."] 1. 21-16 32-37 2. 11-7 1x12 3. 16-11 37-41 4. 11-6 41-46 5. 6-1 22-27 6. 39-34 20-25 7. 1-6 27-32

In the examples above we have seen "only" one "terrible" move per player, but World Championships have more to offer than that. See the next example from WCh 2011, round 2, Getmanski-Moglianski. As a comment to the moves of the Applet I give the notation of the moves indicating with Z, Y and X where Getmanski could have won much easier. Finally the Applet shows the final error 5-10?? and the draw resulting from it. Moglianski was a long time in a clearly lost position, but from his his experience he knows that even strong players quite often do not know how to reach winning(standard) majority positions. From that point of view he deserved the draw.

25-20 (44-50) 20-15 (50 x 22) 5-19 Z (17-21) 15-10 (21-26) 42-37 (16-21) 10-5 Y (11-16) 19-8 ! (21-27) 5-10?? X etc. Applet.

The important thing is not that players make mistakes, but what to learn from it. There is a difference between insufficient calculating and a lack of knowledge of end games. The less pieces on the draughts board, the more insufficient calculating is dangerous. In the end games phase understanding of finesse and of the (standard) majority endgames is of vital importance. In particular taking the opportunity of reaching winning majority end games where applicable.
Even the very best players of the world still can improve in that respect. Two of the very best players of the world are of course Alexei Chizhov, ten times World Champion and Alexander Georgiev with the highest rating of all players of this World Championship. Alexei Chizhov is also a man of high moral standards and with Alexander Georgiev exemplary for all draughts players. However, fortunately enough for other players, they as well do not always play the best moves.

The example is from the Wch 2007 in Amsterdam and I have seen it live. More than that, look at the foto on this blog where I give the FMJD price for the best end game to Alexander Georgiev. The interesting thing is that both Chizhov and Georgiev made a mistake during this end game. I told only a very few people at that time, we kept it secret, because it remains a very good win by Georgiev. Now, it is no secret anymore.
The point concerning this article is that both Chizhov and Georgiev did not make the right judgment of a majority end game. Their end game is a real battle. Look at the first move. That Chizhov is playing well is shown by the first move 18-40 that is the only one besides 18-7 that keeps the draw. For instance 18-1 or 4 are loosing.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK18,28,50:B6,8,20,24,K48."] 1. 18-40 48-31 2. 40-49 20-25 3. 28-23 31-4 4. 49-21 4-10 5. 21x3 10x28 6. 3-12 6-11 7. 12-21 11-16 8. 21-12 28-39 9. 12-7 16-21 10. 7-2 24-29 11. 2-7 29-33 12. 7-2 39-48 13. 50-44 48-37 14. 44-40 33-38 15. 40-34 21-26 16. 2-7 37-19 17. 7-2 19-35 18. 34-29 35-44 19. 29-23 44-22 20. 2-24 38-43 21. 24-15 43-49 22. 23-19 22-4

Played very well by Georgiev. For example the moves (39-48) and later (21-26) and (37-19) are the only ones winning. He deserved the price. However, the analyses below shows that after the second move (20-25) of the Applet Chizhov played a loosing move, but Georgiev did not see the winning majority end game and did it wrong. Immediately after that Chizhov forced himself the same majority end game! From that moment on Georgiev played a winning game, but was only later aware of it.

Applet: 18-40! (48-31) 40-49 (20-25)28-23?? //49-40=// (31-4??) //(31-37)+// 49-21?? (4-10).

A known majority-system. Black reaches a second King and can avoid exchanges. As always, when you know, it is easy.
