Nicest win of World Championship 2011

Round 13 of the Wch 2011 included Erdenebileg Dul (Mongolia)- Edvard Buzinsky.
The organizers as well as Dul himself can be satisfied with his playing during this tournament.
Below I present the vital part of this game in a special way. You will see three Applets with the same start position. This saves me some work, but the main reason is that I show you three different ways of playing from that moment on, where Dul played 38-32. It is true that 39-34 would have been much better, but I do not show that here.
First I show you a dream, that is what I would have played against Dul, with a very strange move (4-10) at first sight.

Second I show you what Buzinsky has calculated by playing (36-41), that was his dream so to say.

Finally we will be back in reality and that is how Dul presented a very big surprise for Buzinsky.

All three are quite unusual variants.

That was a narrow escape for Dul. 4 x 36 is better of course, but also a draw. Next is how Buzinsky thought forcing a draw

Nice idea, but Dul found a brilliant win after (36-41).

The move 3-12!! crowns this excellent forcing.

Grandmasters, very good and terrible moves

The World Championship 2011 is at the moment that I write this about halfway. Looking for nice fragments close to the end of the game I was pleased with Buzinsky-Baljakin. As usual the forced win of Alexander Baljakin starts after a failure of Buzinsky, but the way how Alexander profits is a perfect example of an efficient win. A fast reduction of the number of pieces leading to a position winning without any doubt. It is very likely that Baljakin calculated the complete variant before (19-23) or even earlier.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W21,26,28,29,31,33,36,38,45,48:B3,11,12,15,17,18,19,20,22,24."] 1. 38-32 11-16 2. 32-27 20-25 3. 29x20 15x24 4. 48-42 19-23 5. 28x30 25x34 6. 45-40 34x45 7. 33-29 22-28 8. 27-22 18x27 9. 21x23 45-50 10. 29-24 16-21 11. 24-20 12-18 12. 23x12 17x8 13. 26x17 50x11 14. 20-15 3-9

A beautiful kind of forcing win, but there was no reason at all for Buzinsky playing 38-32. Looking at other Buzinsky games during WC 2011, I found that he missed two very easy wins, against Valneris and Gantwarg. Together with the Baljakin game Buzinsky could have had 3 points more, leading to a position high on the list. The next Applet is of round 3, Valneris-Buzinsky, where Buzinsky plays the terrible move(14-20),instead of the easy winnig (24-29) as shown by the Applet. Buzinsky really played a terrible move, because (18-23) wins even more easily!!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W26,30,31,35,36,37,43,46:B14,16,17,18,19,22,24,27."] 1... 24-29 2. 43-38 29-33 3. 38x29 27-32 4. 37x28 22x24 5. 46-41 24-29 6. 41-37 29-33 7. 37-32 33-39 8. 32-27 17-22 9. 26-21 39-44 10. 21-17 22x11 11. 27-21 16x27 12. 31x24 44-50

The next one, round 6 Gantwarg-Buzinsky, contains not understandable bad moves from both sides. Gantwarg has an inferior position, but that is insufficient reason for playing 40-34?? However, Buzinsky replies with (13-18!) 34-29 (25-30??) leading to a draw. It is almost a waste spending an Applet on it, so easy is the missed combination.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,27,32,33,35,37,38,40,47,48:B2,4,7,11,12,13,14,17,24,25."] 1. 40-34 13-18 2. 34-29 24-30 3. 35x24 14-19 4. 24x22 17x39

The above might give the reader the impression that Edvard Buzinsky is not a strong player. However, that is not my intention and not my opinion. Buzinsky is a strong player with a high rating and he is also a composer of interesting practical combinations, published in books. He is also able of winning against Gantwarg. See the next two Applets with a fragment of the European Championship 2008 in Tallinn.
Buzinsky has the better position also in this case, but Gantwarg could have made it easier for himself by playing 30-25(19-24)43-39. This forces Black to play (12-17) or (1-7 or 6) and the draw is guaranteed.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W21,26,27,30,43,44:B1,12,18,19,23,28."] 1. 43-39 19-24 2. 30x19 23x14 3. 44-40 14-20 4. 21-16 12-17 5. 27-21 17-22 6. 16-11 28-32

What Gantwarg is doing next is very difficult to understand. Every draughts player makes mistakes and that is fine because otherwise we would only see draws. However in this case 21-16 is so obviously lost that it seems that Gantwarg did not calculate at all. It is so obvious because there is no doubt whatsoever what Black will play. So calculating is extremely easy in this case. The alternative 21-17 leads to a draw, without much complcations.
After 21-16 Buzinsky is practically forced to win!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W11,21,26,39,40:B1,18,20,22,32."] 1. 21-16 32-37 2. 11-7 1x12 3. 16-11 37-41 4. 11-6 41-46 5. 6-1 22-27 6. 39-34 20-25 7. 1-6 27-32

In the examples above we have seen "only" one "terrible" move per player, but World Championships have more to offer than that. See the next example from WCh 2011, round 2, Getmanski-Moglianski. As a comment to the moves of the Applet I give the notation of the moves indicating with Z, Y and X where Getmanski could have won much easier. Finally the Applet shows the final error 5-10?? and the draw resulting from it. Moglianski was a long time in a clearly lost position, but from his his experience he knows that even strong players quite often do not know how to reach winning(standard) majority positions. From that point of view he deserved the draw.

25-20 (44-50) 20-15 (50 x 22) 5-19 Z (17-21) 15-10 (21-26) 42-37 (16-21) 10-5 Y (11-16) 19-8 ! (21-27) 5-10?? X etc. Applet.

The important thing is not that players make mistakes, but what to learn from it. There is a difference between insufficient calculating and a lack of knowledge of end games. The less pieces on the draughts board, the more insufficient calculating is dangerous. In the end games phase understanding of finesse and of the (standard) majority endgames is of vital importance. In particular taking the opportunity of reaching winning majority end games where applicable.
Even the very best players of the world still can improve in that respect. Two of the very best players of the world are of course Alexei Chizhov, ten times World Champion and Alexander Georgiev with the highest rating of all players of this World Championship. Alexei Chizhov is also a man of high moral standards and with Alexander Georgiev exemplary for all draughts players. However, fortunately enough for other players, they as well do not always play the best moves.

The example is from the Wch 2007 in Amsterdam and I have seen it live. More than that, look at the foto on this blog where I give the FMJD price for the best end game to Alexander Georgiev. The interesting thing is that both Chizhov and Georgiev made a mistake during this end game. I told only a very few people at that time, we kept it secret, because it remains a very good win by Georgiev. Now, it is no secret anymore.
The point concerning this article is that both Chizhov and Georgiev did not make the right judgment of a majority end game. Their end game is a real battle. Look at the first move. That Chizhov is playing well is shown by the first move 18-40 that is the only one besides 18-7 that keeps the draw. For instance 18-1 or 4 are loosing.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK18,28,50:B6,8,20,24,K48."] 1. 18-40 48-31 2. 40-49 20-25 3. 28-23 31-4 4. 49-21 4-10 5. 21x3 10x28 6. 3-12 6-11 7. 12-21 11-16 8. 21-12 28-39 9. 12-7 16-21 10. 7-2 24-29 11. 2-7 29-33 12. 7-2 39-48 13. 50-44 48-37 14. 44-40 33-38 15. 40-34 21-26 16. 2-7 37-19 17. 7-2 19-35 18. 34-29 35-44 19. 29-23 44-22 20. 2-24 38-43 21. 24-15 43-49 22. 23-19 22-4

Played very well by Georgiev. For example the moves (39-48) and later (21-26) and (37-19) are the only ones winning. He deserved the price. However, the analyses below shows that after the second move (20-25) of the Applet Chizhov played a loosing move, but Georgiev did not see the winning majority end game and did it wrong. Immediately after that Chizhov forced himself the same majority end game! From that moment on Georgiev played a winning game, but was only later aware of it.

Applet: 18-40! (48-31) 40-49 (20-25)28-23?? //49-40=// (31-4??) //(31-37)+// 49-21?? (4-10).

A known majority-system. Black reaches a second King and can avoid exchanges. As always, when you know, it is easy.

All in One Composition

The composition presented here contains a forcing, a combination with economical majority captures, an interlude and two full sized end games complete with variants and thematical false solutions. In particular the interlude resulting in the two end games is something special. In order to fully understand the composition the difference between the two end games is explained first, before showing the symbiose leading to the complete composition.

The first diagram shows the essential moment of the first of the two end games. White has to play here 41-37!! with a very beautiful win,(based upon a final of Fabre). See later the complete solution at the end of this article.
White should not play 41-36, because it leads to a surprising draw. See the first Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK18,41:B1,21,30."] 1. 41-36 1-6 2. 18-7 21-27 3. 7-16 27-31 4. 36x27 30-34 5. 27-22 34-39 6. 22-17 6-11

The decisive moment of the second end game is on the second diagram. It is amazing, but the choice here is the other way around. White has to play 41-36!! now, because 41-37 leads to a draw, even without any chance for White! As opposed to the first end game 41-36 leads to a thematic win, as shown by the Applet. Please notice that after 36 (6) 8! (11)30! there is another thematic variant (17) 48! (20) 31, 25.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK24,41:B1,4,14,26."] 1. 41-36 1-6 2. 24-8 6-11 3. 8-30 14-20 4. 30-19 11-17 5. 19-46 4-10 6. 46x5 17-22 7. 5-37 22-27 8. 37-42 27-32 9. 42x15 32-37 10. 15-10 37-42 11. 10-37 42x31 12. 36x27 26-31 13. 27x36

A bright moment gave me the idea of combining these two end games. At first glance these two have nothing in common, the first end game leads to a final at the Black high left side of the board, the second one down under. Nevertheless, combining these end games is possible, as shown by the Applet with the interlude.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK2,8,46:B1,4,10,16,25."] 1. 8-3 10-14 2. 3x20 25x14 3. 2-24

The miracle is there. Obviously the second end game appears after (16-21) 46-41 (21-26). How to reach the first end game is less obvious. The next Applet shows the first moves, but instead of playing the right move 4-18 another interesting false solution is shown, where Black has to play with ultimate precision.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:WK24,46:B1,4,14,16."] 1... 4-10 2. 24-15 14-19 3. 15x4 19-24 4. 4-22 24-29 5. 22-39 16-21 6. 46-41 21-27 7. 41-37 1-7 8. 39-6 29-34 9. 6-44 7-11 10. 44x6 27-32 11. 37x28 34-39

Now´s the time for showing the full composition with the correct solution. As the reader is now aware of the subtle aspects of the intermezzo and the two end games, the Applets do not need further explanation. The full solution is shown first with the second end game.

These two end games are of equal quality, but the climax of the other end game is a bit more spectacular. The moves 41-37 and at the end 16-21 perfectly demonstrate the beauty of our game.

The position after the move of the White King to 24, with the split into two end games, does not seem so easy to apply as a "motief" of compositions. However, shortly before our recent holidays I tried a number of variations. Four of them with sufficient quality will be shown in a next article of my blog.

Almost All in One

The main thing of the previous article is the position Black 1,4,14,16. White 46 and a King on 24 with Black to move. This position contains two end games, the first one starts with (14-20) 24-15, the second one with (16-21) 46-41.
Below I will give some variations showing different ways of reaching this position. Not All in One this time, but not so many different elements.

First of all I tried extending the interlude keeping it an end game. The Applet shows the solution till the key position is reached. You can take for granted that after 8 (27) 3 (16-21) 13 (32) 25 (38) 48 the position wins for White without doubt.
So you can concentrate on the very unusual solution.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W13,18,26,46:B1,4,5,15,16,17,21."] 1. 13-8 15-20 2. 18-12 20-25 3. 8-2 17x8 4. 26x17 8-12 5. 17x8 5-10 6. 8-3 10-14 7. 3x20 25x14 8. 2-24

The second variation is the result of my effort of getting a minature leading to the key position. As a miniature it is reasonable, but I prefer all the other variations presented on my blog.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W18,19,22,23,24,31,46:B1,4,7,8,12,16,27."] 1. 19-13 8x17 2. 31x2 12x23 3. 24-19 23x14 4. 2-24

I continued my efforts with the goal of making something better, resulting in an extension of the key position. The extension and an additional new variant are shown by the next Applet. The key position is reached of course after (11-16) 33-24. The new variant is (1-6) After that not less than nine moves are the only ones winning, but the final position is not fully thematic.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:WK33,46:B1,4,11,14."] 1... 1-6 2. 33-24 11-17 3. 46-41 6-11 4. 41-37 11-16 5. 24-33 17-21 6. 33-24 4-9 7. 24-8 21-27 8. 8-24 16-21 9. 24-15 14-19 10. 15-4

The challenge now of course was composing a combination resulting in this extension of the key position.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W14,19,20,23,26,29,32,35,38,39,40,46:B1,3,4,8,9,11,12,17,18,21,25,28."] 1. 39-33 28x37 2. 19-13 8x39 3. 29-23 18x29 4. 38-32 37x28 5. 40-34 29x40 6. 35x22 17x28 7. 26x8 3x12 8. 14x3 25x14 9. 3x33

This composition has a lot to offer and it might have been considered very good if I did not compose better ones. So the goal of improving remained, resulting in the one below. The full solution is given, but includes only one of the two end games.

I hope the reader likes these efforts and explanations. The weeks to come I do not have any time available for draughts.

Alexander Moiseyev Grandmaster Player and Composer

In the years before WW II, several of the world´s best players were draughts-composers too, publishing both combinations and end games. Isodore Weiss was the most productve in that respect, but also M. Fabre, M. Bonnard, B. Springer, H. de Jongh and R.C Keller were active in showing the beauty of draughts in this way. R.C. Keller was even a founder of the "Kring voor Damproblematiek".
In Russia, including 64 sq of course, Z. Tzirik, B. Blinder and B. Shkitkin are good examples of strong players who were also well known composers.
Later the split into two separated worlds, players and composers, grew wider and wider unfortunately.
However there are some good exceptions, one prime example is Alexander Moisejev who is a Checkers World Champion and a talented and productive composer on the 100 sq.

The first example is a simple one, but it shows the talent of combining the nice finish, that we saw before at my site in a composition of Aart de Zwart, with a totally different sharp ending.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,23:B7,16,17,22."] 1. 6-1 7-11 2. 23-19 22-28 3. 19-13 28-33 4. 13-8 16-21 5. 8-2 21-26 6. 2x16 26-31 7. 16-2 31-36 8. 1-12 17x8 9. 2x47

This nice end game is one of the "1000 Mini" as the very good book of Miljenko Lepsic is called. It contains 1000 end games with not more than two White pieces, Men and /or Kings. Alexander Moiseyev contributed considerably to the book. It is in Russian and in English.
I can strongly recommend this book both to players and composers. The compositions contain a number of ways to win that can be applied in the practical game.

In order to make clear that composing sharp (thematic) variants is not so easy, look at the position after 16-2. Only (31-36) and (33-39) are really sharp to the end. After (31-37) White has a choice of landing place. After (17-21) or (17-22) or (33-38) there are several ways of winning. That is also the case for all other moves of Black after (7-11) than those given in the Applet.

A price winning composition.

With the above in mind a far more complicated composition is shown. I will do my best explaining it, as easy to follow as possible. I will give in writing a number of other variants than shown in the Applets. So when you play the Applets and wonder what if when Black plays otherwise, you can find it there.
I will give two separate Applets for the main variants 7-1 (24-29) 1-6 (29-33) or 7- 1 (24-29) 1-6 (8-13).

This masterpiece reached the third place of the second FMJD World Championship End Games Composition, category B. It contributed to Alexanders outstanding second place of the total result in a field of 24 participants, including a number of the best end game composers of the world.

Forcings

The next compositions of Alexander are easier to follow, with far less variants, but very interesting solutions. From time to time the way Black is defending himself is as surprising as the winnig moves of White.

The first one is part of a composition of Alexander Moiseyev that he presented as a 9 x 9 in order to meet the conditions of a French contest.
He was right doing so, because he reached the first place of the category with it. However, I prefer presenting the main part of the composition starting with a clear initial position. Look at the very unusual solution and the two similar finals.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W13,29,45,47,49:B2,10,14,15,35,38."] 1. 29-24 35-40 2. 45x34 14-20 3. 24-19 20-25 4. 34-29 25-30 5. 29-24 30-35 6. 24-20 15x24 7. 19x30 35x24 8. 13-9 24-29 9. 9-4 38-42 10. 4x38 42x33 11. 49-43 2-8 12. 43-38 33x42 13. 47x38

The final can be mirrored easily. Het slot kan eenvoudig gespiegeld worden.

I am sorry, but I could not resist making a problem resulting in this end game.

Maybe we will add a few compositions of Alexander Moiseyev later, but for the moment we conclude with a fantastic climax. I suppose I do not need to explain why after 36-31 Black is forced to play (21-26). The amazing aspect of the solution is that there is absolutely no other way to win in a position where White has a majority of four!

False, but Beautiful

Following requests the text below is given in English, but in Dutch as well.

As an introduction to the main message, a famous composition is shown of Jaap Viergever. It is in all respects a great 46/5.(The initial position is arranged slightly by me, because the original position has a naughty second solution). The common factor with the second diagram is the block of white at 11, 17, 18, 21 that is the base of the system 21 x 3 (12 x 21) 3 x 48 (6 x17) 16 x 9. Several compositions were published with this system, but this one is the best. Though, it is perhaps better to say that the two shown here are the best.

Anyway, please play the first Applet and notice the system applied.

After that we have a look at the second one.

Majortiy captures bring a black man to 36 and a black king in a cave. However, there is one minor detail: It does not win!!

Now it is your turn. I assure you that the initial position of the second diagram is correct. However, the Applet does not give the proper solution. As a matter of fact an Applet, as the program is built, is not able to give the proper solution!
You can also be sure that there is a win, because the second composition won the first price in the KvD Championship of 1965, together with the other participating compositions of the same author resulting in the overall Championship.
So there is no excuse for not finding the right solution. However, I am sure that you as a good player will find it yourself.
I sincerely hope you will enjoy it.

The importance of end games
