A very interesting game of the Computer Olympiad 2015

In addition to the previous article about the Computer Olympiad 2015, with superficial analyses, I present to you a profound analyses of the game between Scan and Moby Dam. The game was full of surprising moves and combinations, with a quite astonishing outcome of the analysis at the end.
The first Applet starts at the moment Mody Dam considered it the right moment to attack.

Scan-Moby Dam
[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "B:W30,31,32,33,34,36,37,38,39,40,41,42,43,48,49:B2,3,4,6,8,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,23"] 1. ... 23-28 2. 33x22 17x28 3. 32x23 19x28 4. 38-32 13-19 5. 32x23 19x28 6. 43-38 8-13 7. 38-32 13-19 8. 32x23 19x28 9. 42-38 11-17 *

The game is analysed at the Forum and the conclusion was reached that (11-17) was the error leading to losing the game.
The next Applet shows how Black is forced to play the move (28-32), after which it is explained why White played 48-42 and Black (12-18). Please notice that after 37-31 Black cannot play (12-17) because of 31-26!, with the threat 27-22 (28-32) 36-31, 31- 27, 26 x 6.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W30,31,34,36,37,38,39,40,41,48,49:B2,3,4,6,12,14,15,16,17,18,28"] 1. 31-27 6-11 2. 38-33 18-23 3. 33x22 17x28 4. 37-31 11-17 5. 27-22 28-32 6. 22x11 16x7 7. 48-42 12-18 *

The reason that White should not play 49-43 instead of 48-42, is the same as why Black played (12-18) after 48-42. Because from the end of the Applet above Black forces a draw after 49-43 with (23-28!) 40-35 (18-23) 42-38 (14-19, 28-33, 23 x 21)=. After (23-28) 42-38 should have lost in a spectacular way, in particular because (3-8 or 9) and (7-12, 12-18, 18-23) are the only winning moves! After 36-31 or 27-21 Black wins by (33-38).

De reden dat wit geen 49-43 moet spelen i.p.v. 48-42, is dezelfde als waarom zwart (12-18) speelde na 48-42. N.l_ dat vanaf het eind van de Applet hierboven zwart remise forceert na 49-43 door (23-28!) 40-35 (18-23) 42-38 (14-19, 28-33, 23 x 21) =. Na (23-28) 42-38 zou wit op spectaculaire wijze verloren hebben, in het bijzonder omdat zowel (3-8 of 9) als (7-12, 12-18, 18-23) de enige zetten zijn die winnen. Zowel na 36-31 als 27-21 volgt (33-38) z+!

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W30,31,34,36,39,40,41,42,49:B2,3,4,7,14,15,18,23,32"] 1. 49-43 23-28 2. 42-38 3-8 3. 38x27 18-22 4. 27x18 8-13 5. 18x20 15x33 6. 34-30 7-12 7. 31-27 12-18 8. 41-37 18-23 9. 36-31 33-38 10. 43x32 28-33 11. 27-21 2-7 *

Scan was aware of all this and switched to another way to win the game. First of all we show an alternative way of defending the Black man on 32. This was not what was played by Moby Dam, but it shows a totally different way of playing that also had to be taken into acoount by the programs.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W30,31,34,36,39,40,41,42,49:B2,3,4,7,14,15,18,23,32"] 1. 31-26 3-8 2. 49-43 7-12 3. 30-25 18-22 4. 42-37 23-28 5. 26-21 2-7 6. 37-31 *

The way Moby Dam choose is different. To start with, after 31-26 (2-8) 36-31 (7-12) is 49-43 (23-28) still a draw. Two other combinations shown by the two Applets below seem to be a good defense.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W30,31,34,36,39,40,41,42,49:B2,3,4,7,14,15,18,23,32"] 1. 31-26 2-8 2. 36-31 7-12 3. 40-35 15-20 4. 49-43 23-28 5. 42-38 4-10 6. 38x27 28-33 7. 39x28 20-24 8. 30x19 14x21 9. 26x17 12x21 *

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W30,31,34,36,39,40,41,42,49:B2,3,4,7,14,15,18,23,32"] 1. 31-26 2-8 2. 36-31 7-12 3. 40-35 15-20 4. 49-43 23-28 5. 26-21 18-23 6. 42-38 20-25 7. 38x27 28-32 8. 27x38 23-29 9. 34x23 25x34 10. 39x30 12-18 11. 23x12 8x46 *

Of course avoiding the combinations is the easiest thing for Scan, but finding the way to win requires deeper calculations. With the right moves on both sides of the board Scan decides the game. Remarkable is that Scan does not win a piece with 42-38 in this case, but brings Black in a hopeless position.

[White ""] [Black ""] [Result "*"] [FEN "W:W26,30,31,34,35,39,41,42,43:B3,4,8,12,14,18,20,28,32"] 1. 34-29 12-17 2. 30-24 20-25 3. 42-38 25-30 4. 38x27 30x19 5. 41-36 17-22 6. 26-21

The position is clearly losing for Black and the game was completed after a few moves.

So far what seems to be a quite complete analyses. However, we kept a surprise to the end of this article. The analyses at the Forum concluded that in the position shown at the end of the first Applet (11-17) was the one that lost the game. However, a closer look at the position at the end of the second Applet, learns that (15-20/4-10) is a real alternative for (12-18). What happens then shows the final Applet.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "B:W30,31,34,36,39,40,41,42,49:B2,3,4,7,12,14,15,23,32"] 1. ... 15-20 2. 49-43 4-10 3. 30-25 20-24 4. 40-35 23-28 5. 42-38 24-30 6. 35x24 10-15 7. 38x27 14-20 8. 25x14 3-9 9. 14x3 15-20 10. 3x33 20x49 11. 27-22 2-8 12. 41-37 49-27 13. 22-17 27-18 14. 34-30 18-23 *

So a draw and I found no better moves for White after (15-20). The conclusion at the Forum seems to be wrong. Moby Dam could have escaped. Moby Dam played well during the Olympiad, won 4 games. The game against Scan was the only one Moby Dam lost of 11 games!!
Scan played this game without any mistake, simply used the opportunity to win.

I hope this game was interesting for players. Anyway, it proves again the complexity of draughts. The former World Champion Isodore Weiss said " Le jeu est plus fort que nous". The game is stronger than we are.

Computer Olympiad 2015 Draughts Championship

A separate MS Word article, distributed to the readers of my Blog, describes the organisation of the Computer Olympiad 2015 held at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands. Many different mind sports programs participated, with programmers from all over the world. The article gives details about the Draughts Championship that, with 12 particpating programs, was the largest tournament of the Computer Olympiad. The MS Word article gives the names of the programs and of the programmers / operators, as well as the final results.
The Blog article you find here is about the games with a selection made in such a way that all participating programs are involved. The idea is to illustrate the difference in strength of the programs, from rather low to world championship level.

We start with the final part of the game between the two programs finished at the low end of the list of competitors, Cerberus and Slagzet. It is not a surprise that the game contains a number of errors by the programs. Slagzet first missed the winning move (22-28!), finally made it even worse by playing after 33-29 the unlucky move (9-13??). Cerberus did not miss the opportunity to win.
Leo Nagels and I are organizing Computer Draughts tournaments over more than 25 years now. One of the goals is to contribute to the development of draughts programs. For a new program like Slagzet there is a lot to learn during such a tournament. In particular because, as opposed to draughts played by humans, there are open discussions between the programmers during the games.
Maurits Meijer, the author of Slagzet, also contributed to the tournament by organizing the draughts-boards and clocks.

Cerberus-Slagzet

GWD finished at place 10. Slagzet played the game against GWD quite well, but with 32-28, x 28, instead of the much safer 30-25, he came into trouble. GWD continued strongly with a well deserved victory resulting.

The next participant is a special one. Andrew Lin from Seatle, USA, with his program Deep Nikita, is a professional from Microsoft. For further information see the MS Word article. It was the first time that he participated in a world-class Draughts competiton. One of his best games was against Cerberus. Enjoy the attacking style. He finished as 9th.

Gradually we come to the programs participating successfully since the early start of the computer draughts tournaments. Tornado is one of those and with the next game he proves to be too strong for the newcomer Deep Nikita. This one applies a very original, but wrong defense with 44-39, 33-29. For Tornado it was not at all difficult to win.

TD King was also successful at many previous tournaments. His game against Cerberus proves the quality of his program. In fact the result was already clear at the moment the Applet starts. TD King reached place 7, a sign that this competition was tough.

The program Dam 2.2. by Harm Jetten is very well known. Now he came with a new program called Moby Dam. It finally shared place 5 and 6 with Dragon. The game against Deep Nikita is also an example of a clear difference in strength between the two programs. Moby Dam does not only win very convincingly, but also concludes with a nice combination.

The next game contained a big suprise. Dragon is a very strong program, in addition to that the only one participating with a 8 piece endgame database. It was considered as one of the favourites for winning this tournament and indeed has not lost one game. It was clear that he should win against Slagzet. He did reach a winning position after executing an original forcing. However, at the very end something went wrong. His endgame database showed that there was not any doubt left that his position was winning and after every move the position remained so according to the database. However, the program could not find the right moves in order to finalize the end game, because the program repeated his moves, instead of finding the way to proceed.
Finally the referee ( happens to be me) has to decide that the game was a draw, because of the repeating moves. Immediately after this game Michel Grimminck found the bug of the program and repaired it so that it will never happen again!

See the forcing with 33-28!! and the repeating moves after 7-1 (32-49). Also notice 44-40, 43-39, 49 x 38 in order to reach a 8 piece endgame data base position.

Sjende Blyn is also a well known program now and one of the strongest programs as well. During this tournament it did not lose one game. I come back to that later. Sjende Blyn reached place 4. The win against GWD seems to be obvious, hard to find where GWD did something wrong.

Sjende Blyn bereikte plaats 4. De winst tegen GWD lijkt vanzelfsprekend, moeilijk te zien waar GWD iets fout doet.

JDraughts did not play at the computer tournaments for many years, but made his comeback at the Computer Olympiad 2015. A very convincing comeback because he reached 16 points, the same as number two Damage, but only got the bronze medal because of the Sonnenborg Berger system. We see a splendid victory against GWD. White could have played 48-43, but that seems to be not so attractive because of (18-22) 38-33 (14-20) 28-23 (13-18, 26-31, 21-26, 16 x 49). So White played 48-42. J Draughts won the game after a few powerful moves.

Wit speelde daarom 48-42. JDraughts won na een paar krachtige zetten.

Damage also revised his program, but invested in hardware as well. It is not usual to measure the power of a computer in kilograms, but you will believe that his computer of 30 Kg is very powerful. Damage was also a favorite and confirmed it with his second place with 16 points. The game against Tornado is of special interest, because Damage reached an unusual majority position with a King of Black and White quite a number of moves away from promotion. A nightmare for players, but it proved not to be a problem at all for the computer program. Please notice that both 38-33 and 27-22 are the only winning moves!!

The very convincing winner of the Computer Olympiad 2015 Draughts is the program Scan from Fabien Letouzey, France, with the fantastic score of 18 points in 11 rounds. We knew that he also is the author of a famous chess program, but we did not know about the real strength of his draughts program. The game shown here is only one example of the strength of Scan. Within a few moves the position of GWD is hopeless. More than that, after most of the possible Black moves White can win in several ways. Scan builds a position that is solid and flexible at the same time. This is playing draughts at a very high level. The program has some features that bring new dimensions to computer programming, not only for mind sports.

This tournament proved what we expected to happen soon. The best draughts programs become unbeatable. All the best five draughts programs of this Computer Olympiad did not lose any game. Together they played 55 games without any defeat. Not only they will not lose against other progams, it is very unlikely that they will lose against human players including the World Champion. In a match against very strong players they will not lose one game and occasionally win one or more games. In other words the computer programs are definitely stronger now than the best players. This is not a real problem, the game remains very interesting for players and the programs will discover new beautiful aspects of the game.

Simple End Games. Playing Applets step by step recommended

Most of the time I present on my Blog rather complex compositions or difficult decisions players had to be made, where a lot of explanation is required. This article is easier to read, because the selection of end games does not have many variants and no long false solutions.

The first Applet starts with a threat, that Black seems to avoid by playing (13-19). However, 48-42!! is the killer.

The next one leads straightforward to a final where both (35-40) as well as (22-27) are fully thematic.

A famous final of Isodore Weiss is the climax of the one below.

A very different final, fully original around 1960, is reached both after 3-14 (40-45) and also after (40-44), showed by the Applet.

Honestly, I made a far better one than the next, but the latter is an easier way to reach the final. Both (37-41) as well as (35-40, 37-41) are thematic.

A position like the next one does not look like a 46/5 composition, but the main variant is. After 45 x 34 Black could also play (10-14). The reader will find easily how to win in that case.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W19,K24,K41,45:B5,10,K27,34"] 1. 19-13 27x4 2. 41-36 34-40 3. 45x34 10-15 4. 34-30 4-10 5. 30-25 10-28 6. 36-41 28x46 7. 25-20 *

A number of computer programs have difficulties with excecuting a capture where White has the choice between two captures with the same start and landing, but capturing different Black pieces. An Applet needs precise commands in order to make the right choice. This problem has been solved as the next Applet shows. See the capture 45 x 25.

Understanding the next end game is understanding why 1-23 !! is the only way to win. The whole solution aims at preparing the marvelous move 47-42 !!. After 39 x 28 it does not make a difference if Black plays (11-16) or (11-17).

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W21,44,47,K49:B2,7,14,22,29,36"] 1. 21-17 22x11 2. 44-39 29-33 3. 39x28 11-17 4. 49-40 17-21 5. 40x1 21-26 6. 1-23 14-20 7. 23-34 2-7 8. 34x1 26-31 9. 47-42 36-41 10. 42-37 41x23 11. 1x15 31-37 12. 15-47 *

To conclude, an end game with a final of Russian origin. It is still not clear to me who is the author of this spectacular combination of thematic variants. The other highlights of the composition are the moves 47-36! and 36-31!! forcing Black to play (33-38) because of :
- (23-28) 31-48 (32-38) 48-30
- (33-39) 35-30, 15 x 44 (32-38) 31-27 (38-42) 27-38

An instructive majority endgame. Een leerzaaam overmachts-eindspel.

All the Black moves of the first Applet are forced, until after 15 moves the 4 x 2 majority endgame is reached. Then we see how White gets the opportunity of playing the moves 49-40-35, with a standard winnig majority position resulting.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:WK1,15,30,39,44,49:B4,5,8,13,22,28,35,41,45"] 1. 1-18 35x24 2. 18x20 8-12 3. 20-33 12-18 4. 33x6 18-22 5. 6x28 5-10 6. 28x5 45-50 7. 5-28 50-45 8. 28-6 45-23 9. 6-1 13-18 10. 1-6 23-14 11. 39-34 18-23 12. 6-33 14-3 13. 33-22 3-12 14. 22-18 12-17 15. 18x29 17x50 16. 29-23 50-33 17. 34-30 33-39 18. 30-24 39-25 19. 49-44 25-43 20. 44-40 43-39 21. 40-35 *

However, the instructive matter is that Black should not play 17. (33-39?), because he can make a draw at that moment.

17. (33-50) 30-24 (50-39!) 23-41 (39-25) 41-32 (48) 24-19 (4-9!)=.

White played 33-22 at move 13. See the diagram below. Another try would be 34-30. This would be winning, if Black did not have a surprising reply.

34-30 (23-29!!) 33 x 24 (3-25!)=.

Finally a third attempt of White to win, starting again from the position of the first Applet. This variant also explains why the move (8-12!) is the only way to force a draw.

These variants are a demonstration of the complexity and beauty of our game and contain a practical majority endgame, but what is the relevance for draughts-composers? Well, these variants are part of a composition. Not the main part, because a composition is as a rule supposed to be winning. So we have to look at which moment of the solution White missed the winning moves. When playing the Applet we come to the point where White has the choice between 25 x 1 or 25 x 3. That is the moment where White misses the win by playing 25 x 1, as proven by all the variants given above. The way to win is 25 x 3 with a solution containing only one way to win. The solution is rather surprising, but does not have a thematic final position. The fully thematic solutions are found in the main variant.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "B:W15,24,25,29,30,33,39,40,42,44,49:B4,5,7,8,13,18,19,22,23,28,32,35,K47"] 1. ... 23x45 2. 42-37 47x20 3. 25x3 32x41 4. 3-9 35x24 5. 9x20 4-9 6. 20x3 28-33 7. 39x28 45-50 8. 28-23 50x19 9. 3-14 19x10 10. 15x4 *

Before playing the Applet with the main variant, the climax of the solution is shown by a diagram. It is about a very rare moment of combining two totally different thematic variants. A sudden death and a very fine endgame composed long ago by Meier, as far as I know. The first variant is of course (35 x 24) 27 x 9 (4 x 13) 15-10 ( 5 x 14) 3 x 19. The other variant is not (24 x 31) 3-20 (35 x 24) 20 x 19 because White lands exactly on a wrong place of the main line, so that (4-9!!) gives a draw! Again we have a surprising false solution. The right solution is given by the Applet.

Now is the time to present the composition in its full splendour. I give the solution without further comments, because everything was explained above.

Because I have more than hundred unpublished compositions I use my Blog this time to publish a number of them. The first one was made nine years ago. The higher the number above the Applet, the more recent they are. The selection contains compositions with combinations leading to not complicated endgames. This article has a minimum of comments.

Endgame and much more

The initial position of the new composition looks quite plain. The tempo-difference is only three (22 to 25) and no direct contact between Black and White. However, White can develop a strong attack, even so that Black is clearly forced during many moves. The first Applet shows how.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W22,27,28,29,37,50:B9,10,12,15,16,40"] 1. 28-23 10-14 2. 29-24 9-13 3. 37-31 14-20 4. 23-19 20x29 5. 19x17 29-33 6. 17-12 33-38 7. 12-8 38-42 8. 8-3 42-47 *

22-18 seems to be the right move now, but Black has a narrow escape by playing as given below:
22-18 (15-20!) 3 x 25 (16-21!) 27 x 16 (47-36) 31-26 (36 x 13) 25-14 (13-22).

However, White has a surprise available instead of 22-18.
Wit heeft echter een verrassing in petto i.p.v. 22-18.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:WK3,22,27,31,50:B15,16,40,K47"] 1. 3-14 47-33 2. 22-18 33-17 3. 14-25 17-3 4. 50-44 40x49 5. 18-13 49x21 6. 13-9 3x14 7. 25x26 *

Surprisingly enough, Black can escape here as well. Verrassend genoeg kan zwart ook hier ontsnappen.

3-14 (47-33) 22-18 (33-17) 14-25 (16-21!!) 27 x 16 (17-3) 25-43 (3-25)=.

Because of the depth with all the moves of Black forced, as well as the different chances for White, it is as far as I know one of the very best false solutions ever.

It is about time now for the real solution. This proves to be a solution with many variants. In order to make it more easy to understand for the reader I use a mix of Applets, diagrams and comments. The solution starts with 37-31. Because of the threat 50-44, 31-26 Black has only the choice between (12-17, 16 x 7) and (40-45). The false solution started with 28-23 with a draw as result. Rather peculiar is that after 37-31 (40-45) 28-23 is winning easily! After (10-14) 29-24 (12-17, 16 x 7) 27-22! the game is over. See the Applet for how Black can make it very much more difficult for White. The highlights of this variant are the moves 23-19!! and at the end 45-7!!

Afer (49) White can choose to win nicely as below.
(44-49) 19-14, 7-16 (49-40) 50-44, 31-27, 16 x 15.

More interesting, but very peculiar, is the way to win after (48). Please notice that White cannot win anymore when he makes a move with his King on 7 and that White has to move from 50 to 35. With the one at 35 White has to play 7-1 ! and then wins after (25) with the very dull 1-18!! In total a variant of 20 moves!

The diagram shows the position after the sacrifice 23-19 and 28-22. Black can try to defend himself in two other ways

- (12) 16-11 (17) 7, 2 (18) 35! (45) 44 w+.

This Applet and the belonging variants are interesting, but far better is what happens after (9-13) instead of (14-19). It begins with 29-24!! using the situation with the Black on 40. After the remarkable Black reply the position contains two long and fully thematic main variants. The first main variant starts with the move (14-20). As far as I know the simple final is fully original.

The climax is the second main variant and in particular the move 27-21!!! Without further comments the final Applet brings the full solution from the initial position to the final. It is one of those scarce examples of a long and thrilling solution without any King of both sides involved!

Very Old Endgames

The joy that draughts players have by showing nice positions to others is as old as the game itself. In the very old days hardly any endgame was published, but some of them were. Even as far back as the 18th century. Below I present a few. The choice is rather random, but interesting enough for you, I hope, to get an impression of what draughts lovers liked long ago.
For this purpose I looked for very old endgames in "Het Eindspel 2", containing 1620 endgames. The 7 books of Butoschkin, Etudes, 5954 endgames and Kleingoed by Gerhard Bakker and Gerrit de Bruijn, 700 endgames 3 x 3. An interesting and very well prepared book that I recommended earlier. There are not many endgames published before 1900 and of those in "Het Eindspel" many of them have second solutions, etc. So it took a bit of time to find some nice examples.
The first one below is very old (1798), but well suited for learning very young players some of the strategic aspects of draughts, like: Lack of tempo. The strength of the King, dominating the main line. The need to sacrifice two Black Man enabling to cross the line. The sacrifice of the White King as the only way to win. Opposition, one of the basic finals. All of that in a simple, easy to understand, endgame. Only a bit more difficult might be that the move 1-6! is required, because 1-23? is a draw.

The next one published 50 years later, is so good that it can easily compete with most of the endgames published today. At that moment of history the main goal was not to have many thematic variants, but an interesting, preferably deep and surprising, solution. Perhaps the nicest way to win a game.

After these early years a star was born, to become a real famous endgame composer. Cornelis Blankenaar was born 14-12-1876 and published his first "Blankenaar" when he was only 16 years young. A "Blankenaar" is an endgame with 3 White Kings against one Black King and one Black Man (or sometimes two Black Man, after a few moves reduced to one). Over the years he developed these special compositions steadily, resulting in very complex compositions. He only showed the endgames to his friends, but never documented the solutions. Most of them were only published after his death. The strange thing is that by far the most of these compositions have interchangeable moves or second solutions, but finding a solution is still very difficult (without a computer). I show you a very simple one below. It has a fully thematic, but extremely short, variant. However, the main real "Blankenaar" variant has interchangeable moves.

Correct is 47 (36) 46-41 (31) 42, 36.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:WK29,K46,K49:BK4,31"] 1. 29-47 31-36 2. 46-41 4-15 3. 41-37 15-4 4. 49-32 36-41 5. 47x36 4-15 6. 32-27 15-47 7. 27-4 47-33 8. 37-42 33x47 9. 4-15 *

Of course Cornelis Blankenaar was very well able to produce fully sharp endgames. The one below starts quite subtle, while White cannot play 47-42-38 because he has to go in the direction of 26 and cannot play 47-41-37 either, because of (3-9-14).

We conclude this short overview with an idea of Isodore Weiss. He was the World Champion Draughts from 1895-1912 without interruption. Weiss was also an excellent and productive draughts composer, both of combinations and endgames. The idea I mean is the final of the two following compositions. I extended his idea a bit. It requires two Applets. The second one (also two Applets) is not only an endgame, but a surprising forcing.

The other main variant has some extra variants. I give only the main one.

The first move of the forcing is quite surprising, because it looks to give a freeway for the Black that lands on 27. However, a sacrifice changes the situation. After the forced moves (16-21) and 36-31 Black has the choice between (25-30, 19-24) or playing (19-24) right away. The safest way seems to be (25-30), but it is not, as the first of the two Applets shows.

So Black does not play (25-30), but directly (19-24). It is interesting to see that after that it does not make any sense anymore to play (25-30).

The early draughts-composers inspired next generations. We can be thankful for that.

De vroege dam-componisten inspireerden volgende generaties. Wij kunnen daarvoor dankbaar zijn.
