A very interesting game of the Computer Olympiad 2015

In addition to the previous article about the Computer Olympiad 2015, with superficial analyses, I present to you a profound analyses of the game between Scan and Moby Dam. The game was full of surprising moves and combinations, with a quite astonishing outcome of the analysis at the end.
The first Applet starts at the moment Mody Dam considered it the right moment to attack.

In vervolg op het vorige artikel over de Copmuter Olypiade 2015, met oppervlakkige analyses laat ik jullie een grondige analyse zien van de partij tussen Scan en Moby Dam. De partij had geen gebrek aan verrassende zettten en combinaties, met een nogal verbazingwekkend resultaat van de analyse aan het eind.
De eerste Applet begint op het moment dat Moby Dam de tijd gekomen achtte om aan te vallen.

The game is analysed at the Forum and the conclusion was reached that (11-17) was the error leading to losing the game.
The next Applet shows how Black is forced to play the move (28-32), after which it is explained why White played 48-42 and Black (12-18). Please notice that after 37-31 Black cannot play (12-17) because of 31-26!, with the threat 27-22 (28-32) 36-31, 31- 27, 26 x 6.

De partij werd geanalyseeerd op het Forum en de conclusie was dat (11-17) tot verlies leidt.
De volgende Applet laat zien hoe zwart gedwongen wordt tot (28-32), daarna wordt uitgelegd waarom wit 48-42 speelde en zwart (12-18). Zie dat na 37-31 zwart geen (12-17) kan spelen wegens 31-26!, met de dreiging 27-22 (28-32) 36-31, 31-27, 26 x 6.

The reason that White should not play 49-43 instead of 48-42, is the same as why Black played (12-18) after 48-42. Because from the end of the Applet above Black forces a draw after 49-43 with (23-28!) 40-35 (18-23) 42-38 (14-19, 28-33, 23 x 21)=. After (23-28) 42-38 should have lost in a spectacular way, in particular because (3-8 or 9) and (7-12, 12-18, 18-23) are the only winning moves! After 36-31 or 27-21 Black wins by (33-38).

De reden dat wit geen 49-43 moet spelen i.p.v. 48-42, is dezelfde als waarom zwart (12-18) speelde na 48-42. N.l_ dat vanaf het eind van de Applet hierboven zwart remise forceert na 49-43 door (23-28!) 40-35 (18-23) 42-38 (14-19, 28-33, 23 x 21) =. Na (23-28) 42-38 zou wit op spectaculaire wijze verloren hebben, in het bijzonder omdat zowel (3-8 of 9) als (7-12, 12-18, 18-23) de enige zetten zijn die winnen. Zowel na 36-31 als 27-21 volgt (33-38) z+!

Scan was aware of all this and switched to another way to win the game. First of all we show an alternative way of defending the Black man on 32. This was not what was played by Moby Dam, but it shows a totally different way of playing that also had to be taken into acoount by the programs.
Scan was zich van dit alles bewust en schakelde over op een andere manier om de partij te winnen. Eerst laat ik een alternatief zien om de zwarte op 32 te verdedigen. Dat werd zo niet door Moby dam gespeeld, maar computer programma´s rekenen zo ongeveer alles door.

The way Moby Dam choose is different. To start with, after 31-26 (2-8) 36-31 (7-12) is 49-43 (23-28) still a draw. Two other combinations shown by the two Applets below seem to be a good defense.
Moby dam Kiest een andere weg. Om te beginnen is het na 31-26 (2-8) 36-31 (7-12) 49-43 (23-28) nog steeds remise. Twee andere combinaties die de volgende twee Applets laten zien lijken een goede verdediging te zijn.

Of course avoiding the combinations is the easiest thing for Scan, but finding the way to win requires deeper calculations. With the right moves on both sides of the board Scan decides the game. Remarkable is that Scan does not win a piece with 42-38 in this case, but brings Black in a hopeless position.

De combinaties vermijden is natuurlijk geen probleem voor Scan, maar de goede weg naar de winst te vinden vereist diepere berekeningen. Met de goede zetten aan beide zijden van het bord beslist Scan de partij. Opmerkelijk is dat Scan nu geen stuk wint met 42-38, maar zwart in een hopeloze positie brengt.

The position is clearly losing for Black and the game was completed after a few moves.

De positie is duidelijk verloren voor zwart en de partij was spoedig afgelopen.

So far what seems to be a quite complete analyses. However, we kept a surprise to the end of this article. The analyses at the Forum concluded that in the position shown at the end of the first Applet (11-17) was the one that lost the game. However, a closer look at the position at the end of the second Applet, learns that (15-20/4-10) is a real alternative for (12-18). What happens then shows the final Applet.

Tot zover wat een redelijk complete analyse lijkt te zijn. Echter, een verrassing is bewaard voor het eind van dit artikel. De analyse op het Forum kwam tot de conclusien dat in de positie aan het eind van de eerste Applet (11-17) de beslissende fout was. Echter, het wat nader bekijken van het eind van de tweede Applet leert dat (15-20/4-10) een mogelijk altenatief is voor (12-18). Hoe het dan verder gaat, laat de laatste Applet zien.

So a draw and I found no better moves for White after (15-20). The conclusion at the Forum seems to be wrong. Moby Dam could have escaped. Moby Dam played well during the Olympiad, won 4 games. The game against Scan was the only one Moby Dam lost of 11 games!!
Scan played this game without any mistake, simply used the opportunity to win.

Dus (15-20) op het goede moment brengt de remise. Ik kon geen betere zetten voor wit vinden. De conclusie van het Forum lijkt dus onjuist te zijn. Moby Dam kon nog ontsnappen. Moby Dam speelde goed tijdens de Olympiade, won 4 partijen. De partij tegen Scan was de enige die Moby Dam verloor van 11 partijen !!

Scan speelde deze partij foutloos, benutte eenvoudig de kans om te winnen.

I hope this game was interesting for players. Anyway, it proves again the complexity of draughts. The former World Champion Isodore Weiss said " Le jeu est plus fort que nous". The game is stronger than we are.

Ik hoop dat de partij interessant is voor spelers. Hoe dan ook, het laat weer eens zien hoe complex dammen is. De vroegere Wereldkampioen Isodore Weiss zei "Le jeu est plus fort que nous". Het spel is sterker dan wij.
