A few outstanding compositions

Just for something special, I show you a few compositions with exceptional solutions. These compositions are totally different from each other, they have hardly anything in common. Most of them I composed many years ago, but I conclude with a new one.

J.C.R. Bus,February 2006

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W25,26,31,33,38,39,42,50:B12,13,14,20,23,24,35,45"] 1. 33-29 23x32 2. 31-27 32x21 3. 26x10 24-29 4. 25x14 29-33 5. 10-5 35-40 6. 50-44 40x49 7. 42-38 49x10 8. 5x50 *

This is the shortest variant. The next one is more interesting. We start now at the 5th move of Black.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "B:WK5,14,42,50:B33,35,45"] 1. ... 33-39 2. 42-38 35-40 3. 5-10 39-44 4. 50x39 45-50 5. 38-32 50x37 6. 10-5 37x10 7. 5x45 *

The third variant brings the climax with 50-44!!
De derde variant brengt de climax met 50-44!!

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "B:WK5,14,38,50:B35,39,45"] 1. ... 35-40 2. 5-10 40-44 3. 10-5 44-49 4. 50-44 49x10 5. 5x28 39x50 6. 28-6 *

The second composition shows a 10 to 9 majority of White. White is forced to play 35-30, but it is the start of a spectactular way to win, with a double-sacrifice!

J.C.R. Bus, mei 1962

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W15,21,29,32,33,34,35,36,39,41:B2,4,11,12,13,18,19,23,25"] 1. 35-30 2-7 2. 15-10 4x15 3. 33-28 11-17 4. 41-37 17x26 5. 39-33 *

Followed by 30-24. Gevolgd door 30-24.

However, Black has a different plan. A thrilling way to reach a draw after a long range of forced moves!

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W15,21,29,32,33,34,35,36,39,41:B2,4,11,12,13,18,19,23,25"] 1. 35-30 11-16 2. 32-27 19-24 3. 30x17 25-30 4. 34x25 23x43 5. 25-20 43-48 6. 20-14 48-26 7. 14-10 26-31 8. 27-22 16x27 9. 22x13 4-9 10. 13x4 31-26 11. 4x31 26x5 12. 17-11 5x46 13. 11-6 2-7 14. 6-1 7-11 *

A very narrow escape. Even the last moves of Black are forced. Without playing (2-7-11) as soon as possible, Black would have lost!!

Because it is a White plays and wins, White is supposed to do so! The winning move is a sacrife again!! After 36-31 Black is forced to take the combination, because otherwise Black will be blocked.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W15,21,29,32,33,34,35,36,39,41:B2,4,11,12,13,18,19,23,25"] 1. 35-30 11-16 2. 21-17 12x21 3. 36-31 21-27 4. 31x22 18x38 5. 29x9 38x40 6. 15-10 25x43 7. 10-5 4x13 8. 5x35 2-7 9. 35x11 16x7 10. 41-37 7-12 11. 37-32 12-18 12. 32-28 *

Eric van Dusseldorp manages Erics Damsite, the most extended Internet site concerning draughts composition. Erics Damsite contains a wealth of information. One of the many topics is called "Top Problemisten in aktie". Quite a lot of draughts-composers all over the world are represented, most of them with only a few compositions, a small number of them 10 or more. I selected one of mine for this Blog article. Eric gave comments on all of these compositions, both the strong sides of the compositions as well as not ideal aspects. His comment for this one of me was only one word:Impressive.
Besides that, he explained that the solution contains two endgames, not variants, but real endgames!!

Erics Damsite is zeer informatief.

A few words about this particular composition. Starting with a nice 13 x 13. The solution contains four Kings, two of both colours. A very peculiar intermezzo appears, leading to a split into two different endgames. At the right moment of the first endgame White has to play 41-36!!, not 41-37? leading to a draw. The second endgame is the other way around! The right move is 41-37!! and not 41-36?
The two endgames have a totally different final position.

Twenty-four moves! The moves 13. 24-8! and 14. 8-30! I like the most.
Vierentwintig zetten! De zetten 13.24-8! en 14. 8-30! vind ik de mooiste.

The other endgame is at least as interesting, with the moves 15.41-37 ! and the classical 19. 16-21! as key moves.

To conclude a brand new miniature, extraordinary because it has five different thematic variants!!

It seems that 17-12 is the simple solution, but that proves to be false.

17-12, 12 x 3, 3 x 48 (35-40)48-34, 25 x 14 (15-20, 7-12) 25-20 (12-18) 20-14 (18-23) 14-10 (23-28) 10-5 (28-33) 5-32 (33-39) 32-49 (2----->21)=.
