A selection out of my ancient and modern 46/5 compositions

It is about 55 years ago that I made my first 46/5 and/or 5/46 compositions. This article first shows a number of old ones, followed by more recent compositions. Though I, as contrast with the first one, give a second Applet with a miniature forcing, you will see a trend of reducing material in recent years.

The first Applet shows a very heavy one. To my surprise I could not find the same construction and final capture in Turbo Dambase among the many thousands of 46/5 compositions of about hundred years! There is a similar construction by Jaap Viergever, but with another final and combination.

The second one is totally different. After a clear forcing the endgame is a quite surprising way to achieve 46/5.

With the next one I participated at the International KvD Championship of 1961. At that moment of time there were hardly any draughts composers outside Europe of the same level. So one could consider it as an European Championship, or even WC if you like. I give you my two participating compositions. The theme was 5/46, a more difficult final to reach than 46/5. We need two Applets for the first one, because the final has two thematic variants, what a jury is supposed to estimate.

Anyway, the winner was the next one. Both Aart Miedema from England and I had sent this composition to the jury! It is too long ago to bother you with the serious failure the jury made. Instead of that I give an improvement of the composition, by a small extension. Now it is even more one of the best 5/46 ever. A pity that Aart Miedema cannot see this version anymore. Miedema has won the KvD contests more than anybody else. I explain the forcing by the next Applet. After (13-19) there is only one way to win!

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W25,26,29,31,33,35,37,38,39,42,44,47:B7,9,12,13,14,17,18,20,22,23,24,27,36"] 1. 39-34 13-19 2. 38-32 27x38 3. 44-40 36x27 4. 35-30 24x44 5. 34-30 23x34 6. 30x50 38x29 7. 37-32 27x38 8. 42x4 *

After 39-34 (7-11) White has several winning combinations. Na 39-34 (7-11) heeft wit verschillende winnende combinaties.

The solution is. De oplossing is:

1961 /2016

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W25,26,29,31,33,35,37,38,39,42,44,47:B7,9,12,13,14,17,18,20,22,23,24,27,36"] 1. 39-34 23-28 2. 29-23 18x49 3. 35-30 49x41 4. 30x10 28x39 5. 25x3 41x5 6. 47-41 36x38 7. 26-21 17x37 8. 3x46 *

The next composition is a kind of curiosity. All the fields of the line 5 to 46 are occupied, so in order to reach a 46/5 all these pieces have to be removed!! Finally only the Men on 5 and 46 are left. The famous end game of Romanov takes care that these Men of Black and White are replaced by the Kings of 46/5. Notice the move 3-21! After that there is another thematic variant (31-36) 21-32 (5-10, 22-27) 5-37 (36-41) 37-31, 46 x 37.

Also starting with 19-13, but without any other ressemblance, is the one below leading the combination to an endgame where Black has a lot of choice, but the main variant is the best though it has a so called dual. One dual is allowed according to the official rules for endgame contests.

.
The selection would not be sufficient without an endgame containing more than two thematic variants. The first Applet starts with the moves 13-8 (38-43) 8-2 (28-32). Black gives three Men away in order to get room to attack with his King. The goal is to reduce the number of White to three. Black reaches this goal indeed, but the White Kings are exactly right at 41 and 35!

The question of course is what will happen when Black does not give away his Men. Black seems to have a far better plan with 47-33-50 with blocking and catching the White King at 5. However, White has a big suprise available with 5-19!! and gets a winning position with one King and two Men for both Black and White!! After 7-1 Black has no escape. The final is an unusual thematic position.

As a kind of encore, another variant leads to 5/46 or 46/5 as well.

In order to complete this selection dignified, the final composition of this article is an extraordinary miniature. It contains an amazing number of interesting finals and a spectacular way to reach 46/5.

Starting with the initial position of the diagram it seems very easy to win as the following variants show.

- 41-37 (31-36) 44-39 w+ or
- 41-37 (24-29) 37 x 26 (13-18) 40-35 (30-34) 44-39, 38 x 50 w+.

However, Back has a big suprise:

- 41-37 (24-29) 37 x 26 (13-18) 40-35 (29-34!, 23-29, 34-39)=.

The first Applet has a second solution, but a nice final worth to have a look at.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W16,32,38,40,41,42,44:B13,14,23,24,30,31"] 1. 16-11 24-29 2. 11-7 31-36 3. 41-37 13-18 4. 7-1 29-33 5. 38x29 23x45 6. 1x9 45-50 7. 9-4 50x47 8. 4-15 36-41 9. 37x46 47-36 10. 15-4 36-47 11. 46-41 47x36 12. 32-27 36x22 13. 4x27 *

The next is also not thematic, but the final is spectacular, with three Kings, one of White against two of Black!!

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W16,32,38,40,41,42,44:B13,14,23,24,30,31"] 1. 16-11 24-29 2. 11-7 31-36 3. 41-37 30-34 4. 40-35 34-40 5. 7-2 40x49 6. 2x28 29-34 7. 28x5 49-44 8. 5-23 34-39 9. 23-5 44-50 10. 37-31 36x27 11. 32x21 39-44 12. 5-28 44-49 13. 38-33 49x16 14. 42-38 16x49 15. 28-6 50x17 16. 6x44 49x40 17. 35x44 *

For a miniature the one below has a quite impressive capture. The double sacrifice 42-37!! is the only way to win! Do not mind the extra White left! It is only a variant.

Now back to the theme of this article. The goal is reached in a fully original way. Also here the move 42-37!! is the key to win!
