Old and New

The rest of the year I have hardly time for draughts, so I show you now a number of draughts compositions, some old published before and rather recent ones.

De rest van het jaar heb ik nauwelijks tijd voor dammen, daarom laat ik jullie nu een aantal dam-problemen zien, een paar oude eerder gepubliceerd en een stel kort geleden gemaakt.

The first move of the Applet is all right, but the majority capture is more than that. Except one capture of two, four different captures of three!!, but to take four is the rule!

De eerste zet van de Applet is mooi, maar de meerslag is meer dan dat. Behalve een slag van twee, vier verschillende slagen van drie!!, maar vier slaan volgens de spelregels!

It looks like that 28-23 (8-12) 43-39 wins as well. As a matter of fact it is winning, e.g. (37-41) 24-19! However, Black does not play (8-12). The Apllet shows how Black escapes. A very peculiar false solution!

Het ziet er naar uit dat 28-23 (8-12) 43-39 eveneens wint. Dat is ook zo, b.v. (37-41) 24-19! Echter, zwart speelt geen (8-12). De Applet laat zien hoe zwart ontsnapt. Een heel ongewone schijnoplossing!

When White takes 5. 36 x 27 Black even wins with (46-28!!) 22 x 13 (28 x 2). A capture of 9 pieces!!
Als wit 5. 36 x 27 slaat, wint zwart zelfs met (46-28!!) 22 x 13 (28 x 2). Een slag van 9 stukken!!

White could also play 3. 3 x 25 leading to a different, also nice, false solution!
Wit kon ook 3. 3 x 25 spelen hetgeen tot een andere, ook mooie, schijn-oplossing voert!

The next one is less spectacular. What this one makes a bit extraordinary is that the 11 x 12 half way becomes a 4 x 5 miniature!
De volgende is minder spectaculair. Wat het een beetje ongewoon maakt is dat de 11 x 12 halfweg een 4 x 5 miniatuur wordt!

Roel Boomstra, the current World Champion, showed me a nice small endgame (could be called a "motief" as well). The pointe of it is that White plays 7-40 and after (19-24) goes back with 40-7 again! I made six combinations based upon this endgame. The Applet below shows the one Roel likes the most. Black gets three Kings!
Roel Boomstra de huidige Wereldkampioen liet mij een leuk eindspelletje zien (kan ook een motief genoemd worden). De pointe ervan is dat wit 7-40 speelt en na (19-24) weer terug gaat met 40-7! Ik heb er zes combinaties op gemaakt. De Applet hieronder laat die zien welke Roel de beste vond. Zwart krijgt drie dammen!

The next one is a forcing. After 43-39 Black is forced to play (10-14), because (12-17) is losing immediately. See the variant below.
- 43-39 (12-17) 41-36! (17-21) 24-20.
De volgende is een forcing. Na 43-39 is zwart gedwongen (10-14) te spelen, omdat (12-17) direct verliest. Zie de variant hierboven.

It is also good to know that 43-39 (10-14) 24-20 (35 x 24) 20 x 38 wins immediately because of the threat 34-29! So we can concentrate on the main solution, with the famous final position of L. Schut.
Het is ook goed te weten dat 43-39 (10-14) 24-20 (35 x 24) 20 x 38 onmiddellijk wint vanwege de dreiging 34-29! Zo kunnen wij ons concentreren op de hoofdvariant, met het beroemde slot van L. Schut.

With three thematic variants. Met drie scherpe varianten. (24-30) or (24-29) or (31-36).

Finally a 6 x 6 miniature, where the solution seems very simple.
Tot slot een 6 x 6 miniatuuur met een schijnbaar eenvoudige oplossing.

Looks Ok, but Black has to play as below:

Lijkt goed, maar zwart moet zo spelen als hierboven aangegeven.

The way to win is totally different. One of the surprises is that White allows Black to play (38-43) because 31-27! captures the Black King.
De manier om te winnen is heel anders. Een van de verrassingen is dat wit toelaat dat zwart (38-43) speelt omdat 31-27! de zwarte dam vangt.
