Gifts by the Endgame Database

As explained at my previous article Ed Gilbert and I are trying to select extraordinary endgames out of the billions of positions of the endgame database. Now we can show some more results. For this article I have selected two very different endgames without Kings in the initial position. The first one starts with diagrams in order to explain a very remarkable aspect of the first two moves of the composition. Of course the analyses and the false solutions are not included at the endgame database. These can only be found manually.

The variants of this endgame start with 12-7 (28-32 or 26-31) a Wite move (26-31 or 28-32). In the case of 12-7 (28-32) the winning move is 7-1. So it seems to be logical that after 12-7 (26-31), 7-1 is the right one as well. However this proves to be an extraordinary false solution as shown below. Almost all the Black moves are the only ones bringing a draw!! The second diagram proves the draw.

-12-7 (26-31) 7-1 ? (31-37!) 18-13 (28-32!) 11-6 (3-9!) 13-8 (37-42) 8-3 (32-38) 3 x 25 (4-9!) 25 x 3 (38-43!) 1-34

- (43-49!) 6-1 (49x29!) 1x34 (42-47) =. (42-48?) 6-1 (43-49) 3-25 w+.

How to win after (26-31) will be explained later. First the shortest variant, "only" 12 moves! Pay attention to 44-39! and 18-12!
Hoe na (26-31) te winnen wordt later uitgelegd. Eerst de kortste variant, "slechts" 12 zetten! Let op 44-39! en 18-12!

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W11,12,18,44:B3,4,26,28"] 1. 12-7 28-32 2. 7-1 26-31 3. 44-39 3-8 4. 11-7 31-37 5. 18-12 8x17 6. 7-2 17-22 7. 1-45 4-9 8. 2-24 9-13 9. 24x2 22-28 10. 2-24 37-41 11. 24-38 32x34 12. 45x46 *

The longest variant has 15 moves! Black gets a King twice with (41-46)! However, is at the end one move too late.

Impressive variants, but the climax is still to come. It is about how to win after 12-7 (26-31).
Indrukwekkende varianten, maar de climax komt nog. Zo blijkt hoe te winnen na 12-7 (26-31).

A completely new way to reach 46/5.
Een volledig nieuwe manier om 46/5 te bereiken.

A simple position with incredible contents. Een eenvoudige stand met ongelofelijke inhoud.

There is a lot to say about the extraordinary quality of this endgame, but the moves are even more convincing than words. Not only the White moves, but also the Black moves making the solution very difficult for White. This becomes clear already at the first moves. It seems to be logical that White plays 39-33 and 32-27, with a flexible position. However, with very precise moves Black forces a draw.

- 33 (20) 27? (9!) 28 (13!) 28-22 (24!!) 17 (29!) 11 (33!) 43 (18) 6 (7!)=.

Zie boven.

The Applet shows the first moves of the solution.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W32,39,40,49:B2,4,5,15"] 1. 39-33 4-9 2. 33-28 15-20 3. 28-22 20-24 4. 22-18 2-7 5. 32-27 7-11 *

Again White has to take a difficult decision. Again after the wrong move of White, all moves of Black are forced to reach a draw!

- 18-12? (9-13!) 21 (17!) 16, 11 (12!) 6 (29!) 35 (19!)=.

Now is the time for White to play a number of brilliant moves!

The climax of the endgame. White can do so much wrong!

- 49-43? (19-23) 26-42 (27-31!, 31-36!) 3-14 (23-29)=.
- 26-8? (24-30, 27-31) 35-24 of 19 (9-13!)=.

I suppose that no Grandmaster would be able to win this endgame from the initial position (if Black would play like the main variant). And I am almost sure that nobody would be able to compose this one. Endgames like this are an enrichment for draughts.
However, most important is that draughts lovers can enjoy the always again surprising beauty of our game.

Stef Keetman, Truus, Ton Sijbrands and Jaap Bus cooperating independently

The title of this article needs some explanation. Stef Keetman is the author of the well known computer-program called Truus. Ton Sijbrands used this program a long time ago when anylyzing a game. To the big suprise of Ton, Truus came with an unexpected win. A program does not make any difference between plain or special, good or bad or whatever, but for a draughts lover the endgame is interesting. It is original, starts with an astonishing move and contains two fully thematic variants. The position was BLack 23, 28, 32. White 14 and a King on 42. Truus found that 42-31 !! is the (only) way to win. See for further explanation below.
With the purpose of giving the endgame more depth I later in 2003 changed the position a bit, with 14 to 12. This makes room for trying to get to an initial position without Kings. I also tried to add an other interesting variant. A bit of luck is required in such cases. The result is shown by the Applets.
So Stef, Truus, Ton and me all contributed to the composition, but in a totally different way! It is all a long time ago, but now I have another look at it. It is the start of something modern.

After the first move of White, Black is forced to play (10-14 or 10-15). Because (10-15) is a dull variant, irrelevant because winning in several ways, I do not show it here. After (10-14) White has to play very precise. Playing 12-8 instead of 13-8 means that White comes one move too late too win. The first Applet leads us to the main choice Black has to make.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W12,18,35,36,37,42,47:B10,16,23,26,28,29,32"] 1. 47-41 10-14 2. 18-13 29-33 3. 42-38 33x31 4. 36x38 26-31 5. 13-8 31-37 6. 41x32 28x37 7. 38-32 37x28 8. 8-3 *

The best choice for Black seems to be (28-32-37), because White cannot prevent that Black achieves reaching promotion to a King. However, White has a surprise available with 46-28 !!

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "B:WK3,12,35:B14,16,23,28"] 1. ... 28-32 2. 3x20 32-37 3. 20-14 23-29 4. 14x46 29-33 5. 12-8 33-39 6. 46-28 39-43 7. 8-3 16-21 8. 3x26 *

A nice way to win, but the main variant is still to come. Though (16-21) seems to be slower than (28-32) it is much more difficult for White to find the right moves. It starts with that after (16-21) 3 x 25 followed by 35-48 seems to be the best move. However, Black survives with (21-26!!). So White plays 3 x 20 ! Enjoy the moves to the finish.

Wit speelt dus 3 x 20 ! Geniet van de zetten naar het eindpunt.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "B:WK3,12,35:B14,16,23,28"] 1. ... 16-21 2. 3x20 21-27 3. 20-42 27-32 4. 42-31 32-38 5. 12-8 38-43 6. 8-3 *

Now we have reached the final with the two thematic variants. The second one is the nicest.

- (43-49) 31-18, 3 x 44, 35 x 44

- (43-48) 3-26 !! (48-25) 35-30 (25 x 43) 31-22, 26 x 48.

Selection

Truus knew how to win when the position Black 23, 28, 32. White 12, 35, King 42 was reached (even earlier). Every computer-program, in particular when it has at least a 6 piece endgame database, finds the winning moves. All positions with 6 pieces or more are already there, in the databases of all the many computers using these programs. However, we do not know how to find the interesting ones. By far most of the many billions positions in the databases are not interesting as a composition. I got the idea that it should be possible that a new program selects the positions out of the endgame database where all the moves are the only ones winning, till the moment that Black cannot play anymore, with only one White left. So I contacted Ed Gilbert USA, the author of Kingsrow. He was very quick with building the basic program. We discussed some ideas how to reach a useful selection. The first steps are successful, but it seems that there are millions of positons with fully thematic variants! So there is still work to do, but I can show you a concrete spectacular result already achieved.

Selectie

The endgame of the diagram was selected out of the endgame database. Ed Gilbert found a number of other interesting ones, but I give this one as an example.
White has to take care that Black cannot play (18-22-27), so plays as till the next diagram. Black has to play such that White cannot attack the one on (22).

- 2-11 (4-10) 11-33 (1-7) 33-38 (18-22) 29-23 (10-14) 39-33 (3-9)

With (3-9) Black made it impossible for White to attack with 38-47 (22-27) 47-36. So White has to switch to another plan. The solution is really amazing.
Met (3-9) maakt zwart het wit onmogelijk aan te vallen met 38-47 (22-27) 47-36. Wit moet dus wat anders bedenken. De oplossing is werkelijk verbazingwekkend.

- 38-43 (14-20) 33-29 ! (20-25) 43-39!
- 38-43 (14-20) 33-29 ! (7-11) 23-18 !, 43-25!
- 38-43 (7-11) 43-48! (22-27) 23-19 !, 48-34!
- 38-43 (7-11) 43-48! (5-10) 33-28!! 48-42 (33-39) 42-15!!

Black finds a way to defend himself much longer, with a long fully thematic variant. This is shown by the Applet below, starting with a combination I added to the endgame in order to get a complete composition. The total solution takes 29 thematic moves, with a bit of cooperation of Black in a clearly losing position at the end !
It is a very promising result of the programming by Ed and our cooperation.

Simple Forcings

About half a year earlier I published an article called Simple Endgames and got some nice reactions. This article contains a few simple forcings. To be honest, I prefer the more complicated ones. In particular because I like an active, sometimes even an ingenious, defense of Black. Such that the game, though it is only a fantasy, gives the impression of two strong players in a real battle. A beautiful game is mostly between two strong players challenging the opponent.
I present the forcings with hardly any comments. Obviously all moves of White are the only winning and for the reader it will be clear that every other move of Black is losing as well, as a rule easier for White.
The numbers above the Applets help me to find my compositions back later, with the complete solution and remarks.

World Championship Draughts 2015 Emmen

The World Championship Draughts 2015 was extremely well organized, with a very high level of players. It was exciting, in particular the last few rounds. Also for the spectators at the venue as well as all over the world. Modern information technology, including computer-analyses, contributed a lot to real time information during the games. The presentations and comments of Harm Wiersma and Auke Scholma were also much appreciated.

This article contains games of the players reaching the five best positions of the final ranking. Alexsey Chizhov, the ten times World Champion, reached place 5, which was a bit of a disappointment for him. When we waited for the closing ceremony Alexsey told me that he was not in a good shape during the first half of the tournament. Indeed he missed a number of opportunities in particular in the endgame phase, but he was also quite unlucky at least in one of the games. It could have happened as well at he game presented below, but this time it went all right for Alexsey and he got the well deserved victory.

The first move is really surprising. After 39-33, 43 x 34 (21-26) 29-24, 24-20, 30 x 10 is a draw of course, but Alexsey has a better combination in mind as shown by the Applet. Ainur Shaibakov saw the combination and was convinced that is is loosing for him. However, the Applet proves a difference.

So Black did not play (21-26), but (14-20) that seems to be the only one to survive. However, Chizhov went straightforward to win.

Though he has a high rating it was surprising that Artem Ivanov from Ukraine reached the fourth place, only one point behind Roel Boomstra and Jan Groenendijk. The game below is one example of his strength. Ndiaga Samb from Senegal played something very unusual. Ivanov found a convincing reply. Long before the excecution of the combination the position was already winning for Ivanov. After (18-22) Samb gave up, but the Applet shows the complete combination.

The game at round 8 between Roel Boomstra and Jan Groenendijk seemed to be of vital importance for the competition. The first Applet below contains a simpler way to win than as played in the game. Winning against the opponent with the same number of points at the end of the competition could have been decisve for the World Title. However, it came different.

Obviously the main competitor for everybody was the World Champion Alexander Georgiev. The difficulty for a World Champion is that most of the other players are satisfied with, or even play only for, reaching a draw. When strong players are focussed on keeping things as neutral as possible it is very hard to win. However, Alexander is used to that and he manages to get advantage even at very dull games. The main thing is that Alexander Georgiev is better at endgames than most of the other competitors. He is the World Champion because he is not only a strong player as most of the Grandmasters, but is better in endgames. One of many examples is given below, it was rewarded by the FMJD as the best endgame of the World Championship 2015. Look at the moves, 27-21!, 6-1!, 1-34! and 48-26! His opponent was Arnaud Cordier, who played very well during this tournament and even caused the final decision of the World Championship!

The final round. De laatste ronde

Before the start of the final round Alexander Georgiev had 24 points and 6 victories. Jan Groenendijk 23 points and also 6 victories. Roel Boomstra 23 points as well, but "only" 5 victories. So it was very unlikely that Roel could win the World Title. In particular because Wouter Sipma got the instruction from the Dutch team to play for a draw against Georgiev. The chance to become World Champion was much bigger for Jan Groenendijk. When he should win and Georgiev playing a draw, Jan would become the youngest World Champion Draughts ever, at the age of seventeen!!
By playing a draw Roel would be sure to reach the third place, even when Chizov and Ivanov should win the last game, what they both did by the way.

Ganjargal Ganbaatar-Roel Boomstra ended in a draw, soon followed by a draw between Alexander Georgiev-Wouter Sipma. So now Jan Groenendijk had the chance to become Worldchampion. Arnaud Cordier played at the initial position of the next Applet an exciting move, in particular while after (13-18) 11-7 is not possible because of the variant below. That is why Arnaud played 45-40 and after (1-6) it seemed that Georgiev was Worldchampion again as the Applet shows.

- 16-11 (13-18) 11-7 ? (22-27, 12-17, 3-8, 1 x 12, 23 x 41).

Everybody thought now that Jan Groenedijk would become the new World Champion. A large number of spectators went to the playing room in order to be there at the moment that Arnaud would gratulate Jan with his Worldtitle. However, Jan got time trouble (as usual for him), what made it even more exciting for the spectators. This contributed to the most spectacular finish of a World Championship Draughts ever. See the last move of the Applet.

The result is that Alexander Georgiev kept his Worldtitle. With 9 Worldtitles he is very close now to the fabulous record of 10 by Alexey Chizhov. Of course it was a disappointment for Jan and for his Dutch fans, but finally everybody respected the victory of Alexander Georgiev. Moreover, it is not sure that Jan Groenendijk would have won the game when he had played a better move than (17-8 ??). Strong computer programs have no doubt that the position was winning, but playing the right moves to win is something else. Below I will give the system to win, the programs do not show us what the right way is.

Though it looks quite simple, we cannot be sure that Jan would have found this way to win. More important is that Jan played a splendid tournament and was rewarded with the Grandmaster title. He is seventeen years of age. Only Harm Wiersma was still a few month younger when he became Grandmaster. With his second place Jan has the right to Challenge the World Champion Georgiev in a match. We wish Jan all the best, not only concerning draughts.

World Class Games at Players against Programs Match

My previous article announced the Feike Boomstra Match. The meeting at November 15, 2015 was a great success. Hijken DTC proved again that it is a very strong team. The programs were not able to win against the Grandmasters Auke Scholma and Aleksej Domtsjev (though one of two games of a test-match before was a victory for Kingsrow). Michiel Kroesbergen managed to reach a draw against the very strong programs Kingsrow and Dragon. In the second group Wouter Wolff and Henk Kalk even reached a victory and a draw.
Nevertheless the programs finally proved to be a bit stronger. Scan, Kingsrow (with Hilko Koning as operator), JDraughts, Maximus and Moby Dam all had one draw and one win. Sjende Blyn was the most successful of all participants with two impressive victories of which one is shown by the first Applets. However, the climax of the tournament was the fabulous game of Scan against Grandmaster Hans Jansen.

White did not play 34-30, 39 x 30 now, probably because of variants like below. However, analyses show that White could survive. White played 34-29 and Sjende Blyn took his chance to win in style.
- 34 x 30, 39 x 30 (18-23) 24-19 (14-20) 15 x 24 (23 x 14) 30-25 (2-8) 24-20 (14-19) 20-15 (19-24).

The lower level (part of the second group) was also interesting for the public. They could be witness of unexpected moves, that proved to be not wrong. In the position of the next Applet there was no need at all for the program to take the combination and most of all no need to play the crazy move (25-30!). After (25-30) 35 x 24 (44-49) 27-22 Black cannot play (49-38?), but keeps the draw after (49-32). That was already for a long time clear to the program.

After this intermezzo, back to the top games. Scan and Hans Jansen played a most interesting game. Scan brought a really superb strategy, crowned by a brilliant forcing, resulting in a 10 piece endgame. This endgame was calculated far before and had to be played very precise. Arguably this is one of the most beautiful draughts games ever.
The next Applet gives the opening and the very challenging play by both. The Applet next to that starts when it gets even more exciting. Finally the endgame is explained shortly.

Scan-Hans Jansen

[White ""] [Black ""] 1. 34-30 17-21 2. 32-28 21-26 3. 40-34 16-21 4. 45-40 20-24 5. 50-45 12-17 6. 37-32 26x37 7. 42x31 21-26 8. 47-42 26x37 9. 42x31 17-21 10. 30-25 21-26 11. 32-27 26x37 12. 41x32 7-12 13. 36-31 11-17 14. 31-26 6-11 15. 48-42 11-16 16. 42-37 17-21 17. 26x17 12x21 18. 34-30 2-7 19. 40-34 7-12 20. 44-40 1-6 21. 46-41 21-26 22. 41-36 *

When Black plays (18-23) now, White has a lot of choices. Not 49-44? because Black has a combination with (16-21, 24-29, etc.) Better is 34-29, 40 x 20, 37-31, 32 x 41, with a more flexible position for White. Hans Jansen chooses a more exciting approach with (15-20) that prevents 34-29 by (18-23, 24-29, 8-12, 13 x 22) with clear advantage. However, Scan has an impressive answer.

Black played (11-16) here. After (18-23) Scan wins as shown below. Marvellous!

- (18-23) 34-29! (23 x 34) 40 x 29 (19-23) 28 x 19 (14 x 34) 30 x 19 (13 x 24) 39 x 19 (9-13) 25 x 14 (13 x 24) 33-28! (10 x 19) 27-21 (26 x 17) 28-22 (17 x 28) 32 x 14.

Zwart speelde hier (11-16). Prachtig!

However, the most impressive forcing comes now. Maar de meest indrukwekkende forcing komt nu.

Scan-Hans Jansen

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "B:W25,27,28,30,32,33,34,35,36,37,38,39,40,43,45:B3,5,6,8,9,10,11,13,14,15,18,19,20,24,26"] 1. ... 11-16 2. 36-31 6-11 3. 34-29 19-23 4. 28x19 14x34 5. 30x19 13x24 6. 39x19 9-13 7. 25x14 13x24 8. 33-29 24x42 9. 37x48 26x28 10. 43-39 10x19 11. 39-33 28x39 12. 40-34 39x30 13. 35x2 *

The amazing thing is that Scan found long before that this endgame is winning. It was reduced to a position with only three White pieces against five Black. If the position would be slightly different with 5 at 4, or 3 at 4, or 15 at 10 or 25, it would be a draw. Moreover, White has to play very precise. After (11-17) the only win is 2-24!! because otherwise (17-22) would bring a draw. I suppose not every player would see that (11-17) 2-24 (17-22) 24-42 ! (22 x 31) 42 x 26 wins. Hans Jansen did see it, but after (17-21) Scan won as well.

Computer-programs are not a threat for draughts, but a very valuable tool to learn much about draughts. Also for training, for getting acces to hundreds of thousands games and compositions, as well as thanks to Applets making all of this more convenient. On top of that computer-programs show very surprising, sometimes real beautiful, combinations and endgames.

This match has contributed to the understanding of the importance of computer-programs.

Feike Boomstra and his son Roel

As Chairman of the Dutch Lymph Gland Cancer Association Feike Boomstra was much esteemed. He got of a lot of praise for his vision and involvement. Via his Internet Blog he described the development of his serious disease and how he handled it. It was a comfort and support for other patients. Feike died at 6-3-2010, a shock not only for his family, but for many friends and acquaintances as well.
Living in Germany I heard of his decease, his illness and his activities described above much later, at the end of 2010.
I had met Feike because of our computer-draughts tournaments. Feike was the author of the program Boomstradam (later a new version was called Horizon). The program Boomstradam was quite successful. It won the Open Championship at 14-12-2008, with other strong programs participating, from France, Switserland and The Netherlands. The Applet gives an idea of the strentgh of Boomstradam extending his advantage move by move till the position of Black became hopeless.

In commemoration of Feike an unique event will be organized at November 15, 2015. At the same venue of the World Championship Draughts at Emmen, The Netherlands. Ten of the worlds best Computer Programs will play a match of two rounds against a strong team mainly from Hijken DTC. Including Grandmasters and other strong players like Hans Jansen, Auke Scholma, Alexsej Domtsjev, Michiel Kroesbergen, etc. In addition to that, there will be a match "Fries draughts" between the program FCerberus and Martin Walinga.
The Feike Boomstra match between teams of computer programs and players is the very first time world wide that such an event is organized.

With such an exemplary father it is not suprising that Roel Boomstra started playing draughts at a young age. Soon his talent became clear. Now he is a Grandmaster and between the worlds strongest players. He is also interested in draughts composition, in particular forcings and endgames. This contributes to his strength as a player. He had a combination published in DP resulting in a simple, but nice and original, endgame. Below I show the endgame of Roel starting with a variant that is well known by strong players and endgame experts, but good to know for all players.

This is obviously a draw. Another attempt of White is a draw as well. See the variant below.
2-35 (6-11) 35-44 (11-16) 44-49 (15-20!) =.
The solution is totally different. Quite surprising are the moves (2-7), (7-40!) and back with (40-7). After that the thematic variant is (6-11, 3-9) 16-2 (24-29) 2-24, 25 x 3. However, in a game it would be played as given by the Applet.

The challenge for me was trying to improve the combination Roel published in DP. I discussed a few possiblities with Roel, but I was not satisfied. Finally I came up with two acceptable ones.
The forcing of the first one is Ok as the variant below proves.
- (34-40) 22, 20, 7 (12, 38) 29 (20) 13, 24, 7, 2.

However, Roel and I prefer the next one, in spite of a minority for White and an uneconomical move. With so many pieces it is not always easy to avoid that.

Anyway, far more important is what happens in November 2015. The World Championship in Emmen The Netherlands, from November 7 till November 25. Four readers of my Blog are participating. Arnaud Cordier of France has the World Record of Laocoon positions (10 Black against one White King !). Alexey Chizov (10 times World Champion !), Alexander Georgiev, at the moment of writing this article playing against Jean Marc Ndjofang, tries to add another WC victory to his list. Both Alexey and Alexander are honest and reliable gentlemen, very successful, but not spoiled by it. For Roel it would be the first time and that is one of the reasons why I very much wish him to win the title.
Besides that we are looking forward to the unique Feike Boomstra event of course.

An astounding endgame of Eric van Dusseldorp

In his newspaper draughts-column Eric van Dusseldorp published a very remarkable endgame. Eric composed (or maybe discovered ?) it in July 2015.
Looking at the initial position it seems unbelievable that the endgame has so much to offer. Anyway, the initial position is easy to remember and after studying the solution it becomes unforgetable!
The first Applet leads to a classical final.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W46,48,49,50:B12,13,14"] 1. 46-41 12-17 2. 41-37 13-18 3. 48-42 14-19 4. 49-43 19-24 5. 43-39 24-29 6. 42-38 18-22 7. 39-33 29-34 8. 37-31 34-40 9. 31-26 22-27 10. 33-28 17-21 11. 26x17 27-31 12. 17-11 31-37 13. 11-6 37-41 14. 28-22 41-46 15. 6-1 40-45 16. 38-32 46x17 17. 50-44 17x50 18. 1-6 *

This looks good, but it is not right at all. Not only the win is not thematic, but both White and Black did not play the right moves. Black missed the draw. At the 8th move Black should not play (34-40), but (17-21!) 31-26 (21-27) 50-45 (34-39, 22-28)=. More important is that White played 3. 48-42 and 4. 49-43 in the wrong order. The reason to start this article with this (wrong) variant is showing that even a minor careless move of White leads to a draw. The amazing thing of this endgame looking dull, is that though the variants are quite long, every move of White is the only way to win !! The next Applet shows the way to victory. A fully thematic win, with an unusual final!

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W46,48,49,50:B12,13,14"] 1. 46-41 12-17 2. 41-37 13-18 3. 49-43 18-23 4. 48-42 14-19 5. 43-39 23-28 6. 42-38 17-21 7. 38-32 19-23 8. 50-45 21-26 9. 32-27 23-29 10. 39-34 29x40 11. 45x34 28-33 12. 37-32 *

When this was all, it would not be so amazing. However, the endgame that looks so ordinary, contains another variant. Again with every move of White as the only one to win! Only at the very end an extra White is remaining.

[White ""] [Black ""] [FEN "W:W46,48,49,50:B12,13,14"] 1. 46-41 12-17 2. 41-37 13-18 3. 49-43 18-23 4. 48-42 17-22 5. 42-38 14-19 6. 43-39 19-24 7. 39-34 22-27 8. 38-33 24-29 9. 33x24 23-28 10. 34-29 27-32 11. 29-23 28x30 12. 37x28 30-34 13. 50-44 *

Still it is not all. The inital position has even one more fully thematic variant!! To be considered as the main variant. The final Applet contains the main variant of the endgame as a part of the solution of a large composition. The diagram below helps explaining how the initial position of the endgame comes into existence.

From the diagram the endgame of Eric van Dusseldorp is reached after (6-11, 25 x 14). The only difference is that the man on 12 is now on 11, but the solution with the thematic variants remains the same completely. This is not the case when Black plays (13-18) instead of (6-11). After (13-18) 3 x 20 (25 x 14) White has the choice between 49-43 (6-11) 43-38 or 46-41 (6-11) 41-37. Two different ways to win, the first one not thematic. This proves what a miracle it is that the endgame of Eric is fully thematic. After (6-11) 3 x 20 (25 x 14) the main fully thematic variant of the endgame starts as is shown by the solution of the final Applet. The double oppositon is reached after very accurate play.
The large composition was made by me during writing this article.

Of course the draughts literature is full of beautiful endgames with a lot of thematic variants. However, without Kings in the initial position, or without a Man very close to the promotion line, the number with more than two thematic variants is much reduced. Only a very few endgames without a King during the solution are interesting. Of those, a 4 x 3 endgame with all the White pieces at the baseline is unique. When such an endgame has three thematic variants without any King involved it is a miracle.
