The Mirror Variation

My previous article is based upon the final 26 x 42, 42-24, 35 x 24. The mirror variation is 25 or 30 x 43, 43-27, 36 x 27.
The first Applet of this next article contains the main variant of my first attempt to reach the mirror variation. This main variant is correct, but did not fully satisfy my goals. This will be explained later.

De eerste Applet van dit volgende artikel laat de hoofdvariant zien van mijn eerste poging de gespiegelde variatie te bereiken. Deze hoofdvariant is in orde, maar bracht niet helemaal wat ik wilde. Zoals ik later toelicht.

Before playing the second important variant it is good to know that two other attempts of Black to reach a draw fail. White has to play very precisely. See below, starting from the position after the combination.
- (28-33) 48-43 (13-18) 21-17 (14-20) 27-21! (16 x 27) 17-11 (20-24) 11-7 (24-29) 7-2! (29-34) 2-11! (34-39) 43 x 34 (33-38) 11-16! w+.

Voordat de tweede belangrijke variant gespeeld wordt is het goed om te weten dat andere pogingen van zwart de remise te bereiken ook falen. Wit moet wel heel precies spelen. Zie hierboven, te beginnen met de positie na de combinatie.

This looks very good, two variants with the climax at the end. However, let us have a look at the position after 5. (24-29).
Dit ziet er heel goed uit, twee varianten met de climax aan het einde. Laten wij echter de positie na 5. (24-29) bekijken.



Unfortunately there is a second solution! With the Black 16 on 26 there are even two second solutions!!
Helaas is er een bij-oplossing! Met de zwarte 16 op 26 zijn er zelfs twee bij-oplossingen!!

- 12-7 (29-34) 7-1 (33-39) 1 x 45! (39 x 48) 27-22 w+.
- 16 ---> 26: 12-7 (29-34) 43-38! (33 x 22) 7-2 w+.

These second solutions of the variant can be avoided by replacing the Black on 13 to 19. But then, as you can see above, both 12-8-2 and 12-7-2 lead to the same win. This is called a dual. So we come to the conclusion that it is impossible to combine these two variants 3 x 25 x 43 and 2 x 30 x 43 in one composition, at least without second solution or dual. Because the 2 x 30 is the most spectacular part of both I switched my goal into trying to find a fully sharp composition with the 2 x 30 climax. The two next Applets show the result.

Deze bij-oplossingen van de variant kunnen vermeden worden door de zwarte van 13 naar 19 te verplaatsen. Maar dan, zoals je hierboven zien kan, leiden zowel 12-8-2 als 12-7-2 tot dezelfde winst. Dit wordt een dual genoemd. Zo komen we tot de conclusie dat het onmogelijk is deze twee varianten 3 x 25 x 43 en 2 x 30 x 43 in één compositie te verenigen, althans zonder bij-oplossing of dual. Omdat de 2 x 30 de meest spectaculaire van de twee is, heb ik mijn doel zo bijgesteld dat ik probeer een volledig scherpe compositie met de 2 x 30 climax te bereiken. De volgende Applets laten het resultaat zien.

A nice extra is that Black cannot avoid the 2 x 30 effect, because of the variant given below.

Een leuk detail is dat zwart het 2 x 30 effect niet kan ontlopen, zie de variant hierboven aangegeven.

The next miniature brings the ultimate effect. Now we have two fully thematic variants after the surprising 41-36!!. See the Applet and the diagram below the Applet.

These sensational variants are forced as well from the initial position after 25-20 (10-14).

An Exercise (Oefening) and a Composition

The two main parts of this article are:

- an exercise concerning your imagination (imaginative faculty) as a draughts player. This has to do with your ability to calculate variants with quite a number of moves. For Grandmasters this exercise is too easy, but for others it might be a nice challenge. I also suggest a possibility to make such a calculation a bit easier.
- a composition based upon the same final, but with a solution that has much more to offer. With considerable choices for both Black and White, as well as thematic variants and a surprising false solution.

Dit artikel bestaat uit twee delen:

- een oefening betreffende jouw voorstellings-vermogen als dammer. Dat heeft te maken met het vermogen varianten met een flink aantal zetten te berekenen. Voor Grootmeesters is deze oefening te eenvoudig, maar voor anderen kan het een leuke uitdaging zijn. Ik geef ook een suggestie een dergelijke berekening wat eenvoudiger te maken.
- een compositie gebaseerd op hetzelfde slot, met een oplossing die veel meer te bieden heeft. Met nogal wat verschillende mogelijkheden, zowel voor zwart als voor wit. Met spannende varianten en een verrassende schijn-oplossing.

Exercise



The only way to try to win is 44-39. Black has a difficult choice now: (11-17) or (12-17). In both cases all the next moves of both Black and White are obvious. So these two variants have only a minor difference. Also almost the same position is reached. However, the solution at the end is very different.

De enige winstkans is 44-39. Zwart moet dan een moeilijke beslissing nemen: (11-17) of (12-17). In beide gevallen zijn de daarop volgende zetten van zowel zwart als wit vanzelfsprekend. De varianten zijn dus nauwelijks verschillend en de positie die bereikt wordt ook. De oplossing echter is aan het eind heel verschillend.

- 44-39 (11-17) of (12-17) 39-33 (17-21) 37-32 (27 x 38) 33 x 42 (21-27) 29-24 (18-23) 25-20 (23-28) 20-14 (27-31) 14-9 (28-32).

Try to play these moves in your mind, starting from the diagram and with (12-17) as first move of Black. The challenge is to "see" the position at the end of the variant given above. When you "see" this position with your eyes closed you can calculate the best and winning moves of White. The position you have to have in mind is given below. When it were a diagram, finding the winning moves would be very easy.

- Black 11,15, 31, 32. White 9, 24, 34, 35, 42. White to move. Wit aan zet.

Probeer de bovenstaande zetten, beginnend vanaf het diagram met 44-39 en (12-17), als een blind-speler na te spelen. De uitdaging is de positie te "zien" die aan het eind van de gegeven spelgang wordt bereikt. Als je die positie "ziet" met gesloten ogen dan kan je de beste en winnende zetten voor wit vinden. De positie die je dan in gedachten hebt is hierboven in cijferstand gegeven. Als het een diagram zou zijn, dan zou het vinden van de winnende zetten heel eenvoudig zijn.

So far the variant starting with 44-39 and (12-17). The other variant starting with 44-39 and (11-17) is even more interesting. It is good to know that it is easier now, because there is no need now to play again the whole variant in your mind. It is much easier to remind the final position of the first variant and simply replace the Black on 11 to 12, with your eyes closed. Then you can quickly find the winning move of White, with a very nice final.

Tot zover de variant die begint met 44-39 en (12-17). De andere variant die begint met 44-39 en (11-17) is nog interessanter. Het is goed om te weten dat het nu makkelijker is, want het is niet meer nodig de hele variant zonder bord na te spelen. Het is veel handiger de laatste positie van de eerste variant in gedachten te nemen en eenvoudig met gesloten ogen de zwarte van 11 op 12 te plaatsen. Dan kan je snel de winnende zet van wit vinden, met een heel leuk slot.

Composition

The excercise above might be found interesting, but a composition should offer more. One of the goals of the composer is to get active and intelligent play from both colours. Preferable with more than one interesting variant. At the initial position of the first Applet it is clear that 24-19 is not the way to win. Because (22-27) 19-14 (15-20!) brings a draw immediately. The first Applet shows a variant that is not thematic at all, but gives White the opportunity to choose a nice way to win. It is also gives the proof that the first two moves of the main solution (8-13) and (22-27) are forced.

De oefening hierboven vindt men wellicht interessant, maar een compositie moet meer brengen. Wat een componist graag wil bereiken is actief en intelligent spel van beide kleuren. Bij voorkeur met meer dan één interessante variant. Vanaf de aanvangs-stand van de eerste Applet is het duidelijk dat wit met 24-19 niet winnen kan. Immers na (22-27) 19-14 (15-20!) is het direct remise. De eerste Applet laat een variant zien die helemaal niet scherp is, maar wit de gelegenheid geeft om op een leuke manier te winnen. Het is tevens het bewijs dat de beide eerste zetten van de hoofd-variant (8-13) en (22-27) gedwongen zijn.

Now we come to the real variants. Black obviously has to try to play (22-27-31) followed by (32-37). The way for White to prevent that is to play 33-28 at the right time. When it is not the right time we get one of the biggest surprises of this composition. With (15-20!!) Black prevents both 9-3 and 9-4 because of a combination. White still has a chance, but Black has an amazing escape.
We komen nu tot de echte varianten. Zwart moet natuurlijk proberen (22-27-31) te laten volgen door (32-37). De manier van wit om dat te verhinderen is op het juiste moment 33-28 te spelen. Is het niet het goede moment dan volgt één van de grootste verrassingen van deze compositie. Met (15-20!!) weet zwart zowel 9-3 als 9-4 door combinaties te verhinderen. Wit heeft toch nog een kans, maar zwart heeft een verbazingwekkende ontsnapping.

Now it seems to be difficult for White, because after 14-9 (15-20) 33-28 is also a draw of course and after 14-9 (27-31) 9-3 as well. However, White can do it the opposite way! See the short variants below:
Het lijkt nu moeilijk te worden voor wit. Immers na 14-9 (15-20) 33-28 is het natuurlijk ook remise en na 14-9 (27-31) 9-3 ook. Echter wit kan het precies omgekeerd doen. Zie de korte varianten hieronder.

- 14-9 (15-20) 9-3! (20-25) 3 x 17!! of course not 3-26?
- 14-9 (27-31) 33-28!! (32 x 23) 9-3 (31-36) 3 x 21! (36-41) 35-30! (24 x 44) 42-37 (41 x 32) 21 x 18.

Very subtle variants. In particular because White can play 33-28 at the wrong or the right moments. Because of the variants given above, Black has to prevent 33-28 by playing (24-29) 33 x 24. This leads to continuing the main variant that is given again from the start in order to avoud confusion. The climax is the amazing move 40-34!!
Heel subtiele varianten. In het bijzonder omdat wit 33-28 kan spelen op de verkeerde en de goede momenten. Vanwege de varianten hierboven gegeven, moet zwart verhinderen dat wit 33-28 spelen kan door (24-29) 33 x 24. Dit leidt tot het vervolg van de hoofdvariant die weer vanaf het begin wordt gegeven om te vermijden dat het niet duidelijk is. De climax is de fantastische zet 40-34!!

Black can play an act of dispair now, but White does not have a problem of getting a winning majority endgame. For instance like below.
Zwart kan nu een wanhoopsdaad plegen, maar het kost wit geen moeite een gewonnen overmachts-eindspel te bereiken. Bijvoorbeeld zoals hieronder aangegeven.

These two variants are fully thematic. There is a third, not thematic, variant where White can choose to win with the same final! That is quite unusual.

Memories / Herinneringen

Studying games you played long ago is not always only a pleasure, at least in my case. Most of us will find a large number of wrong moves, if not real stupid. It takes a while before you can laugh about yourself. Fortunately our game is so beautiful that it brings a lot of surprises. Sometimes you can be even fully satisfied about a game, still years later. Some of your games you will remember forever, though played very many years ago.

Partijen bekijken die je lang geleden gespeeld hebt is niet altijd alleen maar leuk, tenminste in mijn geval. Velen van ons zullen een groot aantal slechte zetten vinden, soms zelfs rampzalige. Het duurt even voordat je om jezelf kan lachen. Gelukkig is ons spel zo mooi dat het steeds weer verrassingen geeft. Soms kan je zelfs vol tevreden zijn over een partij, zelfs jaren later nog. Je zult je vast wel enige partijen herinneren die je heel lang geleden gespeeld hebt.

The first example I give is a rather complicated so that it requires three Applets to explain. My opponent was Theo Tielrooij. He was well known for his attractive style of playing. Each year a tournament is organized in Haarlem that bears the name of Theo Tielrooij in commemoration.
Theo with Black considered first to play (8-13). The first Applet shows why he did not play it. Obviously in such a position he wanted to win. This was my goal as well, so I was pleased that he played what he did. Anyway, the (8-13) variant is quite unusual.

Het eerste voorbeeld is enigzins gecompliceerd. Er zijn drie Applets nodig om de belangrijkste mogelijkheden te laten zien. Mijn tegenstander was Theo Tielrooij. Hij was bekend vanwege zijn attractieve speel-stijl. Jaarlijks wordt het Theo Tielrooij toernooi georganiseerd door de Haarlemsche Damclub ter nagedachtenis.
Theo overwoog (8-13) te spelen. De eerste Applet laat zien waarom hij dat niet speelde. De positie ziet er naar uit dat hij wilde winnen. Dat wilde ik ook en daarom was ik blij met wat hij speelde. Hoe dan ook, de zet (8-13) laat een zeer ongebruikelijke afwikkeling zien.

It is understandable that Theo decided to play (9-13). However, it proved to be a fatal error. Before giving the moves that were actually played in the game, the next Applet proves that there was no escape either when Black had played (17-22) as fourth move instead of (18-22).
Het is te begrijpen dat Theo besloot om (9-13) te spelen. Het bleek echter de verliezende zet te zijn. Voordat het partij-verloop wordt getoond, wordt in de volgende Applet aangegeven waarom zwart met (17-22) als vierde zet in plaats van (18-22) ook niet kon ontsnappen.

See for the moves of the game the next Applet. One more remark to be complete: Instead of (4-9) at the fifth move (22-28, 17 x 37) 41 x 32 would be winning for White as well.

Another nice memory is my game against T. Wemer, played in 1980. With his 26-21? he gave me the opportunity to execute a forcing with a sacrifice included.
Een andere partij die ik mij herinner is die tegen T.Wemer, gespeeld in 1980. Met zijn 26-21? gaf hij mij de gelegenheid een forcing uit te voeren waarin ook nog een offer voorkomt.

The next games are from the Championship of Noord-Holland (Amsterdam. Haarlem, Alkmaar, etc.). Long ago 1959. In the fities and sixties the Championship of Noord-Holland was considered on average stronger than the Dutch Championship, with players such as:
- Wim de Jong (several times Dutch Champion), Wim van der Sluis, Baris Dukel, Henk Laros, Jan Metz, Piet van Heerde, Henk Beeke, Alex den Doop, Theo Tielrooij, Ed Holstvoogd and from 1963 on Ton Sijbrands. Ton lost two games in 1963 at this championship! Later of course he was close to unbeatable.

De volgende partijen zijn van het Kampioenschap van Noord-Holland in 1959. In de vijftiger en zestiger jaren werd het Kampioenschap van Noord-Holland gemiddeld sterker beschouwd als het Kampioenschap van Nederland met spelers zoals hierboven opgesomd. Ton Sijbrands verloor tweemaal toen hij in 1963 voor de eerste keer aan dit kampioenschap meedeed. Later overkwam hem dat natuurlijk zeer zelden.

The game against R. Berk had a thunderous final. It was a nice game anyway, though maybe Berk could have survived the endgame. Anyway, after (25-30) White forces the combination.
De partij tegen R. Berk had een daverend slot. Het was sowieso een mooie partij, hoewel Berk zich wellicht nog had kunnen redden in het eindspel. Na (25-30) is het in ieder geval geforceerd uit.

After this game I was on top of the list, together with Wim de Jong. Later it went wrong as the diagram of the game against Piet van Heerde shows.
Na deze partij stond ik samen met Wim de Jong op de eerste plaats. Later ging het fout zoals het diagram van de partij tegen Piet van Heerde laat zien.



I played 44-40, saw that it was wrong and gave up after two irrelevant moves. It later proved to be the reason that I missed the Dutch Championship!
Ik speelde 44-40, zag dat het fout was en gaf het na twee irrelevante zetten op. Later bleek dat ik hiermee de deelname aan het Kampioenschap van Nederland miste!

It took ten years before I got the opportunity to play against Piet van Heerde again. Though I met him several times before, also at his home. I studied at the Amsterdam University at that time.
I arranged the position a bit in order to get a nice final.

Het heeft 10 jaar geduurd voordat ik de kans kreeg weer tegen Piet van Heerde te spelen. Hoewel ik hem enige malen ontmoette, ook bij hem thuis. In die tijd studeerde ik aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam.
Ik heb de positie een beetje aangepast om zo een leuk slot te krijgen.

Victor Nicod still inspires, inspireert nog steeds

The famous position of Victor Nicod gives Black the choice between (18-23) or (19-23). After (18-23) 29 x 18 White has three ways to win, I give the two nicest. The main variant is (19-23) 28 x 19 leading to the climax 50-44 !!! the move that made Victor unforgettable.

De beroemde positie van Victor Nicod laat zwart de keus tussen (18-23) of (19-23). Na (18-23) 29 x 18 kan wit op drie manieren winnen, daarvan geef ik de twee mooiste aan. De hoofdvariant is (19-23) 28 x 19 wat leidt tot de climax 50-44 !!! de zet die Victor onvergetelijk maakte.

Victor Nicod



The edition of DP (De Problemist) December 2001 contains an article about Nicod that I wrote, with 27 compositions of Derk Vuurboom or of me. Vuurboom made hundreds of Nicod compositions, because he was the first to find that the diagram above can be reached by many simple end games. Where different combinations can be added to each of those end games. He also considered it a challenge to bring the Black to 45, instead of already there in the initial position. The first Applet shows an example. Notice the sacrifice 45-40! and the fully sharp end game. The forcing is convincing, after (31-37) White has even two combinations, with 26-21 or 40-35.

DP van December 2001 bevat een artikel van mij over Nicod, met 27 composities van Derk Vuurboom of van mij. Vuurboom heeft honderden Nicod composities gemaakt. Hij was de eerste die uitvond dat het diagram hierboven bereikt kan worden via vele eenvoudige eindspelletjes. Waarbij op ieder van deze eindspelen weer een aantal probleem-bewerkingen mogelijk bleken. Hij vond het ook een uitdaging om ervoor te zorgen dat het zwarte stuk op 45 daar niet al in de aanvangsstand staat. De eerste Applet laat een voorbeeld zien. Let op het offer 45-40! en het volledig scherpe eindspel. De forcing is overtuigend, na (31-37) heeft wit zelfs twee combinaties, met 26-21 of 40-35.

Before showing recent compositions I give you another example (out of the DP article) of how to force Black to go to 45. The surprise in my composition is the move 39-33!!

Now is the time for the recent compositions. The first is a forcing with a very different way to reach the position after (19-23) 28 x 19. White does his very best to reach the promotion line as quickly as possible, but has to stop his strategy unexpectedly.

The last move of Black (25-30!) is a bad surprise for White, because 17-11 now appears to be a draw!

De laatste zet van zwart (25-30!) is een streep door de rekening van wit. Immers 17-11 blijkt nu remise te zijn! Zie boven.

However, White has another opportunity. The move 33-29! (see the Applet) is also required before White can finally proceed with the Man on 17!
Wit heeft echter nog een andere mogelijkheid. De zet 33-29! (zie de Applet) moet ook nog eerst voordat wit eindelijk weer met het stuk op 17 verder kan!

The inspiration by the brilliant invention of Victor Nicod brought another idea. I found that it is possible to extent the final with more Black pieces and still remains thematic! And the initial position of the composition does not have to suffer of it.

De inspiratie door de prachtige vondst van Victor Nicod bracht nog een ander idee. Ik ontdekte dat het mogelijk is het slot uit te breiden met meer zwarte stukken terwijl het toch scherp blijft tot en met het eind! De aanvangsstand van het probleem hoeft daaronder niet te lijden.

The next one has even three more Blacks at the moment of 50-44!! The initial position is not so nice as the previous one, but 45 is brought to his position. Remarkable is the false solution!

De volgende heeft nog meer zwarte stukken op het moment van 50-44!! De aanvangsstand is niet zo mooi, maar het stuk op 45 wordt wel op zijn plaats gebracht. Opmerkelijk is de schijn-oplossing!

After 17-11!! both (6 x 17) and (7 x 16) lead to the same thematic solution!

It is a bit a pity that not so many other composers than Vuurboom and me got insprired by Victor Nicod. Most of the few that tried were not very successful. However, K.W. Kruijswijk brought something really beautiful as an end game. I extended his composition a bit, because it brought some interesting positions, also relevant for the practical play. I consider the very smart final of Kruijswijk as the ideal conclusion of this article.

Het is een beetje jammer dat er maar weinig andere componisten dan Vuurboom en ik door Victor Nicod geinspireerd zijn. De meesten die een poging publiceerden waren niet zo succesvol. Echter, K.W. Kruijswijk bracht iets werkelijk moois als een eindspel. Ik heb zijn compositie een beetje uitgebreid, omdat enige interessante posities opleverde, die ook relevant zijn voor het praktische spel. Het slot van Kruijswijk zie ik als een fraaie afsluitng van dit artikel.

My composition has two main variants:
1. A variant relevant for the practical game. In particular because White can only win by first controlling the line 46/5, followed by forcing Black to move to (45). This is the only way to reach a standard majority endgame (4 against 2).

2. The thematic variant based upon the final of K.W.Kruijswijk. Also here Black is forced to move to (45), but what happens then is amazing. See the final Applet, where 25-20!! is the key to win.

Mijn compositie heeft twee hoofdvarianten:
1. Een variant van belang voor het praktische spel. In het bijzonder omdat Wit alleen maar kan winnen door eerst de lange lijn te bezetten, om vervolgens zwart te dwingen naar (45) te spelen. Dit is de enige manier om een standaard overmachts-eindspel te bereiken (4 tegen twee).

2. De scherpe variant gebaseerd op het slot van K.W. Kruijswijk. Ook hier wordt zwart gedwongen naar (45) te spelen, maar wat daarna gebeurd is subliem. Zie de laatste Applet, waar 25-20!! de sleutel is tot de winst.

Please do not play the first Applet automatically, but step by step. Notice that after (34-40) White cannot play 24-35 or 16-11 or 25-20, beacause of (40-44!) =. Black tries to prevent both 16-11 and 25-20. With success thanks to the threat (40-44), but only till White has reached the standard majority endgame.

Speel de eerste Applet s.v.p. niet automatisch af, maar zet voor zet. Na (30-34) kan wit geen 24-35 of 16-11 of 25-20 spelen omdat dan steeds volgt (40-44!)=. Zwart probeert zowel 16-11 als 25-20 te verhinderen. Dat lukt ook dankzij de dreiging (40-44), maar niet meer als wit de standaard overmachts-winst bereikt heeft.

Preferably do not to play the last Applet automatically. Otherwise you cannot understand that 24-47 fails, which means that the surprising 25-20!! is the only way to win. This also applies for the move 11-6!, instead of 11-7?.

Het verdient ook hier aanbeveling de laatste Applet niet automatisch af te spelen. Anders ontgaat het je dat 24-47 faalt. Dat betekent dat het verrassende 25-20!! de enige winst is. Dat geldt ook voor de zet 11-6!, i.p.v. 11-7?.

Improved end game

Recently I had a look at some of my end games that I composed and had published many years ago. That inspired me to try to do better and I present you one of the results in this article.
This one is in my view a quite substantial improvement. That has mainly to do with the move 20-15!! The move 31-26! is surprising as well, but was already included in the older versions.
First I explain below why 20-15!! is the only one to win. Then I give two Applets with both the main variants.

Een paar dagen geleden bekeek ik een aantal eindspelen die ik vele jaren geleden gemaakt heb en die toen gepubliceerd zijn. Dat inspireerde mij om te proberen ze te verbeteren en één van de resultaten laat ik in dit artikel zien.
Deze is naar mijn smaak een duidelijke verbetering. Dat heeft vooral te maken met de zet 20-15!! Ook de zet 31-26 is verrassend, maar die was er al in de oudere versies.
Zie het diagram van de eerste Applet. Hierboven laat ik zien waarom 20-15!! de enige winst is. Voor de beide hoofdvarianten zie de twee Applets.

When Black as first move, after 28, plays (13), then 23! (10) 27! wins easily. However, 26 ? would be a rather nice false solution.

Als zwart als eerste zet, na 28, (13) speelt, dan is 23! (10) 27! eenvoudig gewonnen. Maar na 26 ? zou het nog fout gaan. Zie hierboven.

The second main variant shows that the classic finals 37/47 and 45/50 are combined in this end game.
De tweede hoofdvariant laat zien dat de klasssieke slotstanden 37/47 en 45/50 zijn gecombineerd in dit eindspel.

Lokzetten. Pièges. Traps.

The Dutch word "Lokzet" (in French Piège) means a kind of trap, where a seemingly winning combination is offered to the opponent in the hope that he does not see the deadly reply. Long ago it was a popular genre of draughts composition and it was quite often as well applied in games in particular by strong players.
In this article we show in all cases the first move and the combination that seems to be winning. Then finding the reply is up to the reader.
The first example is a classic one. The positon after the Black combination has been an inspiration for many draughts composers. The version showed is from H.M.Roos who made a number of very nice compositions.

De Nederlandse dammers zal het woord Lokzet bekend zijn, het was vroeger nogal in de mode. Er zijn vrij veel lokzetten gecomponeerd, al dan niet door bekende componisten en er zijn ook enige mooie voorbeelden uit de wedstrijd praktijk bekend.
In dit artikel geven we steeds de eerst zet en de combinatie die winnend lijkt. Er wordt vanuit gegaan dat de lezer de weerlegging ziet.
Het eerste voorbeeld is een klassieker. De positie na de combinatie van zwart was een bron van inspiratie voor menige problemist. Gekozen is voor de versie van H.M.Roos die een aantal mooie composities op zijn naam heeft staan.

One of the funny things of the position above after the combination is that not only Black, but also White cannot make a draw, even if he wants to. White has very many ways to loose and only one way to win.
Een van de grappige dingen van bovenstaande positie na de combinatie is dat niet alleen zwart, maar ook wit geen remise maken kan, ook al zou hij dat willen. Wit kan op veel manieren verliezen en heeft slechts één manier om te winnen.

The next trap is the move by Black (24-30). Play the combination of White and find the best defence of Black.
De volgende lokzet is de zwarte zet (24-30). Speel de combinatie van wit en vind de beste verdediging van zwart.

The last one of this article was sent to me by Alexey Chizhov, the ten times World Champion. The position is derived from a game of the Dutch Team Competition played 16-11-2013. His opponent was Brian Koullen, playing Black. Alexey told me about the possible trap, but did not play it in the game, because he was not sure about the result. Alexey won the game anyway. We changed the position only by moving the Black on 9 to 10 and now the trap 45-40 is Ok. The interesting thing is that it concerns a kind of Laocoon position, that looks so good for Black.

De laatste van dit artikel heeft Alexey Chizov mij toegezonden, de tienvoudige Wereldkampioen. De positie komt voort uit een partij van de KNDB Club Competitie gespeeld 16-11-2013. Zijn tegenstander was Brian Koullen, die met zwart speelde. Alexey vertelde mij over de mogelijke lokzet, maar speelde die niet in de partij, omdat hij niet zeker was over het resultaat. Alexey won de partij overigens wel. Wij hebben de positie alleen maar aangepast door 9 op 10 te zetten, waardoor de lokzet 45-40 nu correct is. Interessant is dat het gaat om een soort Laocoon positie, die er heel goed uitziet voor zwart.

Black is forced to play (42-47) because (14-20) or (16-21) are loosing immediately. See below for the surprising win after(16-21).

Zwart moet wel (42-47) spelen want (14-20) en (16-21) zijn op slag verloren. Zie hierboven voor de verrassende winst na (16-21)

So the question remains why 45-40 is such a convincing and original trap. Enjoy finding the answer!

Nu nog de vraag beantwoorden waarom 45-40 zo´n overtuigende en originele lokzet is. Veel plezier met de ontdekking van het antwoord!

The first article with the improved Applets

However, Black has an impressive plan leading to a sensational draw. Mind (48-26!) and the only way to reach the standard draw (2-7-11-16).
Zwart heeft echter een geniaal plan dat op sensationele wijze de remise brengt. Let op (48-26!) en de enige manier om de standaard remise te bereiken (2-7-11-16).

However, White has an even better plan, a surprising sacrifice giving so much positional advantage that Black is forced to take a combination.
Wit heeft echter een nog beter plan, een verrassend offer dat zoveel positioneel voordeel geeft dat zwart gedwongen is een combinatie te nemen.

This forcing is very convincing. The positional advantage is such that when Black does not play (11-16), White can even afford two sacrifices and still win without any chance for Black to survive for more than a few moves.
Deze forcing is heel overtuigend. Het positionele voordeel is zo groot dat als zwart geen (11-16) speelt, wit zich zelfs twee offers kan veroorloven en nog wint zonder enige kans voor zwart om meer dan een paar zetten te overleven.

Instead of (15-20), after (12-17) or (7-11) the same 30-24 obviously follows as well.
Na (12-17) of (7-11) in plaats van (15-20) volgt natuurlijk ook 30-24.
