Victor Nicod still inspires, inspireert nog steeds

The famous position of Victor Nicod gives Black the choice between (18-23) or (19-23). After (18-23) 29 x 18 White has three ways to win, I give the two nicest. The main variant is (19-23) 28 x 19 leading to the climax 50-44 !!! the move that made Victor unforgettable.

De beroemde positie van Victor Nicod laat zwart de keus tussen (18-23) of (19-23). Na (18-23) 29 x 18 kan wit op drie manieren winnen, daarvan geef ik de twee mooiste aan. De hoofdvariant is (19-23) 28 x 19 wat leidt tot de climax 50-44 !!! de zet die Victor onvergetelijk maakte.

Victor Nicod



The edition of DP (De Problemist) December 2001 contains an article about Nicod that I wrote, with 27 compositions of Derk Vuurboom or of me. Vuurboom made hundreds of Nicod compositions, because he was the first to find that the diagram above can be reached by many simple end games. Where different combinations can be added to each of those end games. He also considered it a challenge to bring the Black to 45, instead of already there in the initial position. The first Applet shows an example. Notice the sacrifice 45-40! and the fully sharp end game. The forcing is convincing, after (31-37) White has even two combinations, with 26-21 or 40-35.

DP van December 2001 bevat een artikel van mij over Nicod, met 27 composities van Derk Vuurboom of van mij. Vuurboom heeft honderden Nicod composities gemaakt. Hij was de eerste die uitvond dat het diagram hierboven bereikt kan worden via vele eenvoudige eindspelletjes. Waarbij op ieder van deze eindspelen weer een aantal probleem-bewerkingen mogelijk bleken. Hij vond het ook een uitdaging om ervoor te zorgen dat het zwarte stuk op 45 daar niet al in de aanvangsstand staat. De eerste Applet laat een voorbeeld zien. Let op het offer 45-40! en het volledig scherpe eindspel. De forcing is overtuigend, na (31-37) heeft wit zelfs twee combinaties, met 26-21 of 40-35.

Before showing recent compositions I give you another example (out of the DP article) of how to force Black to go to 45. The surprise in my composition is the move 39-33!!

Now is the time for the recent compositions. The first is a forcing with a very different way to reach the position after (19-23) 28 x 19. White does his very best to reach the promotion line as quickly as possible, but has to stop his strategy unexpectedly.

Het wordt nu tijd voor de recente composities. De eerste is een forcing met een heel andere manier om de positie na (19-23) 28 x 19 te bereiken. Wit doet er alles aan om zo snel mogelijk de promotielijn te bereiken, maar moet dit plan onverwachts onderbreken.

The last move of Black (25-30!) is a bad surprise for White, because 17-11 now appears to be a draw!

De laatste zet van zwart (25-30!) is een streep door de rekening van wit. Immers 17-11 blijkt nu remise te zijn! Zie boven.

However, White has another opportunity. The move 33-29! (see the Applet) is also required before White can finally proceed with the Man on 17!
Wit heeft echter nog een andere mogelijkheid. De zet 33-29! (zie de Applet) moet ook nog eerst voordat wit eindelijk weer met het stuk op 17 verder kan!

The inspiration by the brilliant invention of Victor Nicod brought another idea. I found that it is possible to extent the final with more Black pieces and still remains thematic! And the initial position of the composition does not have to suffer of it.

De inspiratie door de prachtige vondst van Victor Nicod bracht nog een ander idee. Ik ontdekte dat het mogelijk is het slot uit te breiden met meer zwarte stukken terwijl het toch scherp blijft tot en met het eind! De aanvangsstand van het probleem hoeft daaronder niet te lijden.

The next one has even three more Blacks at the moment of 50-44!! The initial position is not so nice as the previous one, but 45 is brought to his position. Remarkable is the false solution!

De volgende heeft nog meer zwarte stukken op het moment van 50-44!! De aanvangsstand is niet zo mooi, maar het stuk op 45 wordt wel op zijn plaats gebracht. Opmerkelijk is de schijn-oplossing!

After 17-11!! both (6 x 17) and (7 x 16) lead to the same thematic solution!

It is a bit a pity that not so many other composers than Vuurboom and me got insprired by Victor Nicod. Most of the few that tried were not very successful. However, K.W. Kruijswijk brought something really beautiful as an end game. I extended his composition a bit, because it brought some interesting positions, also relevant for the practical play. I consider the very smart final of Kruijswijk as the ideal conclusion of this article.

Het is een beetje jammer dat er maar weinig andere componisten dan Vuurboom en ik door Victor Nicod geinspireerd zijn. De meesten die een poging publiceerden waren niet zo succesvol. Echter, K.W. Kruijswijk bracht iets werkelijk moois als een eindspel. Ik heb zijn compositie een beetje uitgebreid, omdat enige interessante posities opleverde, die ook relevant zijn voor het praktische spel. Het slot van Kruijswijk zie ik als een fraaie afsluitng van dit artikel.

My composition has two main variants:
1. A variant relevant for the practical game. In particular because White can only win by first controlling the line 46/5, followed by forcing Black to move to (45). This is the only way to reach a standard majority endgame (4 against 2).

2. The thematic variant based upon the final of K.W.Kruijswijk. Also here Black is forced to move to (45), but what happens then is amazing. See the final Applet, where 25-20!! is the key to win.

Mijn compositie heeft twee hoofdvarianten:
1. Een variant van belang voor het praktische spel. In het bijzonder omdat Wit alleen maar kan winnen door eerst de lange lijn te bezetten, om vervolgens zwart te dwingen naar (45) te spelen. Dit is de enige manier om een standaard overmachts-eindspel te bereiken (4 tegen twee).

2. De scherpe variant gebaseerd op het slot van K.W. Kruijswijk. Ook hier wordt zwart gedwongen naar (45) te spelen, maar wat daarna gebeurd is subliem. Zie de laatste Applet, waar 25-20!! de sleutel is tot de winst.

Please do not play the first Applet automatically, but step by step. Notice that after (34-40) White cannot play 24-35 or 16-11 or 25-20, beacause of (40-44!) =. Black tries to prevent both 16-11 and 25-20. With success thanks to the threat (40-44), but only till White has reached the standard majority endgame.

Speel de eerste Applet s.v.p. niet automatisch af, maar zet voor zet. Na (30-34) kan wit geen 24-35 of 16-11 of 25-20 spelen omdat dan steeds volgt (40-44!)=. Zwart probeert zowel 16-11 als 25-20 te verhinderen. Dat lukt ook dankzij de dreiging (40-44), maar niet meer als wit de standaard overmachts-winst bereikt heeft.

Preferably do not to play the last Applet automatically. Otherwise you cannot understand that 24-47 fails, which means that the surprising 25-20!! is the only way to win. This also applies for the move 11-6!, instead of 11-7?.

Het verdient ook hier aanbeveling de laatste Applet niet automatisch af te spelen. Anders ontgaat het je dat 24-47 faalt. Dat betekent dat het verrassende 25-20!! de enige winst is. Dat geldt ook voor de zet 11-6!, i.p.v. 11-7?.

Improved end game

Recently I had a look at some of my end games that I composed and had published many years ago. That inspired me to try to do better and I present you one of the results in this article.
This one is in my view a quite substantial improvement. That has mainly to do with the move 20-15!! The move 31-26! is surprising as well, but was already included in the older versions.
First I explain below why 20-15!! is the only one to win. Then I give two Applets with both the main variants.

Een paar dagen geleden bekeek ik een aantal eindspelen die ik vele jaren geleden gemaakt heb en die toen gepubliceerd zijn. Dat inspireerde mij om te proberen ze te verbeteren en één van de resultaten laat ik in dit artikel zien.
Deze is naar mijn smaak een duidelijke verbetering. Dat heeft vooral te maken met de zet 20-15!! Ook de zet 31-26 is verrassend, maar die was er al in de oudere versies.
Zie het diagram van de eerste Applet. Hierboven laat ik zien waarom 20-15!! de enige winst is. Voor de beide hoofdvarianten zie de twee Applets.

When Black as first move, after 28, plays (13), then 23! (10) 27! wins easily. However, 26 ? would be a rather nice false solution.

Als zwart als eerste zet, na 28, (13) speelt, dan is 23! (10) 27! eenvoudig gewonnen. Maar na 26 ? zou het nog fout gaan. Zie hierboven.

The second main variant shows that the classic finals 37/47 and 45/50 are combined in this end game.
De tweede hoofdvariant laat zien dat de klasssieke slotstanden 37/47 en 45/50 zijn gecombineerd in dit eindspel.

Lokzetten. Pièges. Traps.

The Dutch word "Lokzet" (in French Piège) means a kind of trap, where a seemingly winning combination is offered to the opponent in the hope that he does not see the deadly reply. Long ago it was a popular genre of draughts composition and it was quite often as well applied in games in particular by strong players.
In this article we show in all cases the first move and the combination that seems to be winning. Then finding the reply is up to the reader.
The first example is a classic one. The positon after the Black combination has been an inspiration for many draughts composers. The version showed is from H.M.Roos who made a number of very nice compositions.

De Nederlandse dammers zal het woord Lokzet bekend zijn, het was vroeger nogal in de mode. Er zijn vrij veel lokzetten gecomponeerd, al dan niet door bekende componisten en er zijn ook enige mooie voorbeelden uit de wedstrijd praktijk bekend.
In dit artikel geven we steeds de eerst zet en de combinatie die winnend lijkt. Er wordt vanuit gegaan dat de lezer de weerlegging ziet.
Het eerste voorbeeld is een klassieker. De positie na de combinatie van zwart was een bron van inspiratie voor menige problemist. Gekozen is voor de versie van H.M.Roos die een aantal mooie composities op zijn naam heeft staan.

One of the funny things of the position above after the combination is that not only Black, but also White cannot make a draw, even if he wants to. White has very many ways to loose and only one way to win.
Een van de grappige dingen van bovenstaande positie na de combinatie is dat niet alleen zwart, maar ook wit geen remise maken kan, ook al zou hij dat willen. Wit kan op veel manieren verliezen en heeft slechts één manier om te winnen.

The next trap is the move by Black (24-30). Play the combination of White and find the best defence of Black.
De volgende lokzet is de zwarte zet (24-30). Speel de combinatie van wit en vind de beste verdediging van zwart.

The last one of this article was sent to me by Alexey Chizhov, the ten times World Champion. The position is derived from a game of the Dutch Team Competition played 16-11-2013. His opponent was Brian Koullen, playing Black. Alexey told me about the possible trap, but did not play it in the game, because he was not sure about the result. Alexey won the game anyway. We changed the position only by moving the Black on 9 to 10 and now the trap 45-40 is Ok. The interesting thing is that it concerns a kind of Laocoon position, that looks so good for Black.

De laatste van dit artikel heeft Alexey Chizov mij toegezonden, de tienvoudige Wereldkampioen. De positie komt voort uit een partij van de KNDB Club Competitie gespeeld 16-11-2013. Zijn tegenstander was Brian Koullen, die met zwart speelde. Alexey vertelde mij over de mogelijke lokzet, maar speelde die niet in de partij, omdat hij niet zeker was over het resultaat. Alexey won de partij overigens wel. Wij hebben de positie alleen maar aangepast door 9 op 10 te zetten, waardoor de lokzet 45-40 nu correct is. Interessant is dat het gaat om een soort Laocoon positie, die er heel goed uitziet voor zwart.

Black is forced to play (42-47) because (14-20) or (16-21) are loosing immediately. See below for the surprising win after(16-21).

Zwart moet wel (42-47) spelen want (14-20) en (16-21) zijn op slag verloren. Zie hierboven voor de verrassende winst na (16-21)

So the question remains why 45-40 is such a convincing and original trap. Enjoy finding the answer!

Nu nog de vraag beantwoorden waarom 45-40 zo´n overtuigende en originele lokzet is. Veel plezier met de ontdekking van het antwoord!

The first article with the improved Applets

However, Black has an impressive plan leading to a sensational draw. Mind (48-26!) and the only way to reach the standard draw (2-7-11-16).
Zwart heeft echter een geniaal plan dat op sensationele wijze de remise brengt. Let op (48-26!) en de enige manier om de standaard remise te bereiken (2-7-11-16).

However, White has an even better plan, a surprising sacrifice giving so much positional advantage that Black is forced to take a combination.
Wit heeft echter een nog beter plan, een verrassend offer dat zoveel positioneel voordeel geeft dat zwart gedwongen is een combinatie te nemen.

This forcing is very convincing. The positional advantage is such that when Black does not play (11-16), White can even afford two sacrifices and still win without any chance for Black to survive for more than a few moves.
Deze forcing is heel overtuigend. Het positionele voordeel is zo groot dat als zwart geen (11-16) speelt, wit zich zelfs twee offers kan veroorloven en nog wint zonder enige kans voor zwart om meer dan een paar zetten te overleven.

Instead of (15-20), after (12-17) or (7-11) the same 30-24 obviously follows as well.
Na (12-17) of (7-11) in plaats van (15-20) volgt natuurlijk ook 30-24.

Zwart moest de combinatie wel nemen en ook als zwart geen (11-16) speelt wint wit, kan zich zelfs twee offers veroorloven!

Computer Draughts Championship 2013

Leo Nagels and I are organizing (official) computer draughts tournaments over 25 years now. The strength, functionality, user-friendliness, etc. of the computer-programs improved steadily over the years. In particular, but not only, after the introduction and further expanding of end game data bases. Kingsrow took the lead in generating very large end game data bases. With strong multi-processor computers, calculating 24 hours a day, it takes many month to complete data bases of the current size.
The very convincing winner of the Championship 2013, held on December 15 in Culemborg, is the program Dragon (of Michel Grimminck, the Netherlands). The program is using an eight-piece (Man and Kings) end game data base, but this is not the only reason why this program is so strong. The game below shows the high level of the program.

De sterkte, functionaliteit en gebruikers-vriendelijkheid van de computer-programma´s heeft zich in de loop der jaren voortdurend verbeterd. De zeer overtuigende winnaar van het Kampioenschap 2013, gehouden 15 december 2013 in Culemborg, is het programma Dragon (van Michel Grimminck, Nederland). Dit programma gebruikt een acht-stukken data base (stukken en dammen), maar dat is niet de enige reden waarom dit programma zo sterk is. De partij hieronder laat het hoge niveau van het programma zien.

In the initial position of the first Applet the program TD King (of Ton Tillemans, Switserland) had the move. TD King is a strong program, always in the upper part of the list of a competition. Here TD King played 36-31? instead of 48-43, followed by the dull 37-31. It was his only mistake of the game. After that TD King played the best moves possible, but Dragon did not make any mistake at all during the game! Many of its moves, starting with (20-25!!) were the only one to win. A perfect game, not only by using the Coup Royal threat in an optimal way, but in particular how Dragon wins this game in a classical position. This win is worth studying by all draughts players! Please notice that the 8 piece data base (here 4 against 4) is still out of reach, 50 ply away! That is 25 moves.

In de aanvangsstand van de eerste Applet was het programma TD King (van Ton Tillemans, Zwitserland) aan zet. TD King is een sterk programma, steeds te vinden hoog in de ranglijst van een wedstrijd. Hier speelde TD king 36-31? i.p.v. te hakken met 48-43, gevolgd door 37-31. Het was de enige fout van de partij. Daarna speelde TD King steeds de beste verdediging, maar Dragon maakte geen enkele fout! Veel van zijn zetten, als eerste (20-25!!) waren de enige die winnen. Een perfecte partij, niet alleen vanwege het optimaal gebruik van de Coup Royal dreiging, maar vooral hoe Dragon deze klassieke partij wint. Deze winst is het waard door alle dammers bestudeerd te worden! Men realisere zich dat de 8 stukken data base (hier 4 tegen 4) nog buiten bereik is, nog 50 ply weg! Dat is 25 zetten.

It is of course clear that White had to play 28-22, because of the Coup Royal threats. Also that White had to play the sacrifice 22-17. In particular while it seems that White can survive, as the next Applet shows.
Het is natuurlijk duidelijk dat wit 28-22 moest spelen vanwege de Coup Royal dreigingen. Evenzo dat wit moest offeren met 22-17. In het bijzonder omdat het lijkt dat wit kan overleven, zoals de volgende Applet laat zien.

However, Black has a superb solution. Many moves are the only way to win! See the list below.
Move 42. (23-29!!). 44. (11-17!) 45. (29-34!!) 46. (14-20!) 48. (7-12!) 54. (21-26!) 56. (20-25!) 58. (13-18!) 59. (14-20!) 62. (41-47!).
Echter, Zwart heeft een indrukwekkende oplossing. Bij veel zetten is er maar één die wint! Zie bovenstaande opsomming.

Maybe readers might remark that White could prevent the Coup Royal threat even after playing 36-31. This is true, White could play 48-42, but look what Dragon would have played in that case.
Wellicht zullen enige lezers opmerken dat Wit ook na 36-31 de Coup Royal dreiging nog kan opheffen. Dit is waar, wit kan 48-42 spelen, maar zie wat Dragon dan had gespeeld.

Turbo Dambase Draughts Compositions

By far the best collection of draughts compositions available via Internet is the one of Turbo Dambase. Based upon the collection built during many many years by Wim de Zwart it gives a wealth of information. The data base contains currently more than 150.000 compostions and will grow steadily. This very large number implies that there is a wide range of quality, from the all time best to the unsuccessful. This makes the collection not only independent of individual taste, but also helps preventing that the unsuccessful or low quality compositions are published again. Of course it is a very good tool for draughts-composers to see if his idea was found earler by somebody else.
The strong feature of the Turbo Dambase (by Klaas Bor) collection is the search option that enables making selections not only by author or initial positions of the compositions, but by every position during the solution of each composition, even with either Black or White to move!! This feature was applied for preparing this article.

Veruit de beste verzameling van dam-composities beschikbaar via Internet is die van Turbo Dambase. Gebaseerd op de verzameling van Wim de Zwart, die hij gedurende vele jaren heeft opgebouwd, geeft het een weelde aan informatie. De data base bevat thans meer dan 150.000 composities en zal voortdurend groeien. Dit enorme aantal houdt in dat er een heel grote variatie is in kwaliteit, van de beste ter wereld ooit tot de mislukte. Dat maakt de collectie niet alleen onafhankelijk van persoonlijke smaak, maar helpt ook te verhinderen dat de mislukte of die van slechte kwaliteit nog eens gepubliceerd worden. Natuurlijk is het een heel goed hulpmiddel voor dam-componisten om te zien of zijn idee al eerder door een ander bedacht is.
Het sterke punt van de Turbo Dambase (van Klaas Bor) verzameling is de zoek-mogelijkheid die in staat stelt te selecteren op niet alleen auteursnaam of beginstand van de composities, maar op iedere positie gedurende de oplossing van iedere compositie, zelfs met hetzij zwart hetzij wit aan zet!!. Deze selectie-mogelijkheid heb ik toegepast voor dit artikel.

We start with an immortal composition by C. van der Sommen published in 1946. With the help of Turbo Dambase we can see what other compositons have been made resulting in the same final position by a number of other composers. However, most of them are clearly not as perfect as this one of v.d. Sommen. His initial position is ideal, also because the last move of Black is well understandable,(27-32) instead of (27-31) would be followed by 37-31, 33-28, 45-40. The solution is nice and pure.

Wij beginnen met een onsterfelijke compositie van C. v.d. Sommen gepubliceerd in 1946. Met hulp van Turbo Dambase kunnen we zien welke andere composites gemaakt zijn op hetzelfde slot door een aantal andere componisten. Echter, de meeste daarvan zijn duidelijk niet zo volmaakt als deze van v.d. Sommen. Bij hem is de beginstand ideaal, ook omdat (27-32) i.p.v. (27.31) gevolgd zou zijn door 37-31, 33-28, 45-40. De oplossing is mooi en zuiver.

While the one of v.d. Sommen is the best on this particular final I investigated other, but similar positions. For instance the same final, but with the whole pyramid moved to the left. Again Turbo Dabase contains a number of them. I selected a nice one, with an additional effect. The final contains two Black Kings!

Omdat die van v.d. Sommen de beste is op deze bepaalde opsluiting onderzocht ik andere, vergelijkbare posities. Bijvoorbeeld hetzelfde slot, maar met de hele piramide verplaatst naar links. In Turbo Dambase zijn er een aantal te vinden. Ik selecteerde een mooie, met een extra effect. Hier worden twee zwarte dammen opgesloten!

Another idea, difficult to realize at first glance, is the same pyramide with a Man on 36 instead of a King. Via Turbo Dambase I foud a nice one, though I had to arrange it because the original contains a second solution at the end of the composition!

Een ander idee, dat moeilijk te realiseren lijkt, is dezelfde piramide, maar dan met een witte schijf op 36 i.p.v. een Dam. Via Turbo Dambase vond ik een mooie, maar ik moest de aanvangsstand en de voor-laatste zetten wel wat veranderen omdat het eind van de oplossing een simpele BO bevatte!

The initial postion is unsatisfactory, but the effect is great, in particular the moves 35-30, 3-20!!
De aanvangsstand is onbevredigend, maar het effect is fantastisch, in het bijzonder de zetten 35-30, 3-20!!

The next also contains two Black Kings at the end, but now they cannot move at all. The first move explains the initial position. Please pay attention to what happens after 50-44.

De volgende eindigt ook met twee zwarte dammen, maar nu kunnen beide geen zet meer doen. De eerst zet verklaart de aanvangsstand. Let op de hangende schijf na 50-44.

The question, after the compositions above, remains if it is not possible to reach such spectacular effects with a far better intitial position. The answwer was given by Evgraf Zubov with the splendid composition shown by the next Applet.

De vraag blijft, na de bovenstaande composities, of het mogelijk is zulke spectaculaire effecten te realiseren met een veel betere aanvangsstand. Het antwoord gaf Evgraf Zubov met de formidabele compositie die met de volgende Applet te zien is.

Could it be done bettter? It is always a matter of taste, but the next one is impressive anyway. Also in Turbo Dambase we can find that the basic idea of the end game was found much earlier by A.J. Beemer. However, this composition of Frans Hermelink is far superior. Notice the fact that even after (12-17) White is forced to let his King be caught. After 1-18? Black has a narrow escape. Stop a moment at that point when playing the solution and enjoy.

Kan het nog beter? Dat is altijd een kwestie van smaak, maar de volgende is in ieder geval indrukwekkend. Wederom helpt Turbo Dambase om te vinden dat het basis-idee van het eindspel veel vroeger gevonden is en wel door A.J.Beemer. Echter, de compositie van Frans Hermelink is veruit superieur. Een prachtig detail is dat wit zelfs na (12-17) gedwongen is zijn Dam te laten vangen. Na 1-18? kan zwart nog net ontsnappen. Stop op dit punt even bij het naspelen van de oplossing, om ontspannen te genieten.

At the end of this article a totally other idea, but related to the finals above. Here is the so called "opsluiting" in Dutch, not the final of the solution, but only a means for reaching another thematic final. Please stop at and have a look at the position after 23 x 3. Black cannot play (41-46) because of 42-37! Black is forced to play (24-29). White cannot win by 15-10, but only by a real surprise.

Tot slot van dit artikel een totaal ander idee, maar wel gerelateerd aan de slotstanden hierboven. In dit geval is de opsluiting niet het slot van de ontleding, maar slechts een middel om een veel op andere wijze bewerkt scherp slot te bereiken. Blijf even stilstaan bij de positie na 23 x 3. Zwart kan geen (41-46) spelen vanwege 42-37! Zwart is gedwongen (24-29) te spelen. Wit kan dan niet winnen met 15-10, maar heeft een echte verrassing in petto.

With a bit of practice anyone can find what he wants out of a very large collection of draugths compositions. You can have a quick look when you are in the mood for a nice composition, or take your time and study whatever you like.
For those who have Turbo Dambase for games already on their computer, the additonal price for the composition data base is only Euro 49. This is very cheap, with 150.000 compositions it is only 1 Euro for more than 3000 compositions! More important, it is an inexhaustible source for draughts lovers. Met 150.000 composities is dat 1 Euro voor meer dan 3000 composities! Belangrijker is dat het een onuitputttelijke bron is voor dam-liefhebbers.
