Better than World Championship compositions?

This article contains two compositions with very high scores of the third Personal World Championship Problems (PWCP III) as well as two new compositions not published before and not competing in any tournament. The World Championship compositions are compared with the new ones by discussing a number of aspects so that the reader can judge himself about the different qualities of the four compositions.

The first Applet shows the composition of M. Tsvetov that in Category C (free theme)reached a very high ranking (second place of 42 competing compositions).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,11,21,23,29,41,43,47:B1,8,12,18,32,34,35,37,40."] 1. 11-7 37x46 2. 47-41 46x37 3. 21-17 12x21 4. 23x3 34x23 5. 3x48 1x12 6. 6-1

A very nice final is reached now, deserving a high ranking. After (40-45) there are two thematic variants given below:

- (40-45) 1 x 40 (35 x 44) 43-38 (32 x 43) 48 x 50.
- (40-45) 1 x 40 (45 x 34) 43-38 (32 x 43) 48 x 25 (35-40) 25-39 (40-45) 39-50.
However, the best thing is the third thematic variant as the next Applet shows.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:WK1,43,K48:B12,32,35,40."] 1... 32-38 2. 1x47 40-45 3. 43-38 35-40 4. 48-39 45-50 5. 39-44 50x42 6. 47x45

Of course it is not easy to add a combination to this nice final. The jury wil have taken that into account. Anyway, the result is not impressive. The intial position is not very aesthitic and shows a minority of White, a so called unfinished composition. The moves before the end game appears are not very interesting. Let us compare the prize winning composition of Tsvetov with a new composition of Alexander Moisejev that he has sent to me recently.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W16,24,28,38,43,44,47:B8,13,17,19,30,31,35."] 1. 28-22 17x28 2. 16-11 31-37 3. 11-7 35-40 4. 44x35 13-18 5. 24x33 37-42 6. 35x24 8-12 7. 7x18 42-48 8. 33-28 48x42 9. 47x38

The initial position looks far better. It invites having a closer look at the possible moves at both sides. As first move 43-39, with the threat 28-23, looks very good, but Black replies with (19-23!, 8-12, 12 x 3) and White cannot win. The moves before the final are interesting, because Black defends himself with surprising moves. At the end there are two thematic variants. When Black plays (42-48) directly White wins by 2 (13) 29! (35) 30, 38. The Applet shows the main variant with (8-12, 42-48), a remarkable one against six!

The Tsvetov composition ends with three nice thematic variants, the second thematic variant of the composition of Moisejev is a bit plain. However, each of the three of Tsvetov is well known, combining them is the achievement. The main variant of Moisejev is fully original. Moisejev scores better concerning most of the other aspects in my view. Up to you as reader of this article which one you prefer.

We go to a higher level now. Vladimir Matus is by far the most successful draughts composer concerning championships and other tournaments ever. He also won this PWCP III very convincingly. Below we present the composition with the highest score of all the many compositions of all the four categories. It is the compostion of Vladimir Matus of Category D, the second place for this category was also for Matus! We play the Applet till the final of one of the two main variants is reached.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,7,11,19,38,39,41:B10,16,20,27,28,29,36,40."] 1. 6-1 36x47 2. 39-33 28x39 3. 1-6 47x33 4. 19-14 20x9 5. 7-2 16x7 6. 2x15

Three simple variants now. Drie eenvoudige varianten.
-(33-47) 6-33 (47 x 24) 15 x 45.
-(33-47) 6-33 (47 x 29) 15 x 33 (40-45) 33-50.
-(33-50) 15-33, 6 x 35.

Obviously this is only the start. In the case of Matus you can expect much more. Dit is natuurlijk slechts het begin. Bij Matus kan je veel meer verwachten.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,7,11,19,38,39,41:B10,16,20,27,28,29,36,40."] 1. 6-1 36x47 2. 39-33 28x39 3. 1-6 47x33 4. 19-14 10x19 5. 7-1 16x7 6. 1x21

- (50) 21-17, 35 (33) 30 (33-38) 48.
- (50) 21-17, 35 (34) 44.
- (45) 50 (33) 6 (50) 21-17.
- (47 or 42) 38, 35 (33) 30 (33-38) 48
- (47 or 42) 38, 35 (34) 44.
So we have in total eight thematic variants!! Thematic variants was the theme of this Category. However, in this case very much the same. Anyway, the jury was impressed. As with the one of Tsvetov we also se a White minority in the initial position. The initial position of Matus does not look good either and the first moves are not very interesting as well. The highlight is of course the move 19-14!!

We zien dus acht scherpe varianten!!

In order to compete with the composition of the World Champion we need something much different. For this we present a composition by Alexander Moisejev in cooperation with E. Sklyar from Israel. I arranged it a bit, with agreement of the authors. This time it is not the number of thematic variants that counts, but the very fine way the climax is reached. Judge yourself.

Oordeel zelf.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W24,31,36,37,40,43,44,45,47:B8,9,21,22,23,26,28,32,35."] 1. 31-27 22x42 2. 47x16 28-32 3. 16-11 23-28 4. 11-6 28-33 5. 6-1 33-38

It seems that Black has forced the draw, because after 1-29, 44-39, 29 x 19 Black is just in time with (26-31!). The same goes for 44-39, 45-40, 1-12 (49 x 19), 12 x 37 (26-31!). However, the next two Applets show how to win.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK1,24,36,40,43,44,45:B8,9,26,32,35,38."] 1. 44-39 35x33 2. 45-40 38x49 3. 1-12 49x13 4. 12x27 13x31 5. 36x27

And finally. En nu tot slot.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:WK1,24,36,40,43,44,45:B8,9,26,32,35,38."] 1. 44-39 35x33 2. 45-40 38x49 3. 1-12 49x19 4. 12x39 32-37 5. 39-28 37-42 6. 28-37 42x31 7. 36x27

Opinion
Vladimir Matus was right of course with selecting his compositions for Category D as well as for the other categories. He knows very well what kind of compositions get high points from a jury, in particular when most of the jury members are from East Europe. This is the way to become World Champion. However, these kind of compositions with the main goal to get as many thematic variants as possible is not everyone´s taste. The compositon of Moisejev as well as the one together with Sklyar show active play from both colours and a nice and original climax. The initial position, forcings, combination, the defense of Black and the surprise at the end are all in harmony.
In many compositions competing in Championships the interesting part is only at the end after a number of rather boring moves without any active role of Black. If it was not a championship, publishing only the end would be better for the public.
I will give you an example. We take the idea of Tsvetov and reach the beautiful multi-thematic position in another way. Of course it could not participate at the same competition, but it is a nicer way to reach the thematic variants with a better looking initial position. It is simply a nicer presentation.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W11,39,43,K48:B12,23,29,30,32."] 1. 11-6 30-35 2. 39-34 29x40 3. 6-1 32-38 4. 1x47 40-45 5. 43-38 35-40 6. 48-39 45-50 7. 39-44 50x42 8. 47x45

Anyway, I hope this article will bring something you like, whatever your taste is.

Mening

World Record Alexander Georgiev

The World Record Clock Simultaneous Games was held in Emmeloord at the same location of the World Championship Draughts 2011 and organized by mainly the same people.

In short the ( FMJD) rules for such a World Record to be recognized are:
- At least 25 opponents.
- The result must be at least 70 % of the possible score.
- The opponents must have a rating, the average rating must be 1950 FMJD points or the comparable (recalculated) KNDB rating.

Alexander Georgiev took the challenge wit 42 opponents! In this case 70 % of the possible score means 84 * 0,7 = 59 points. For example 20 wins, 19 draws and 3 lost. Or 21 wins, 17 draws and 4 lost.

Of 21 gewonnen, 17 remise and 4 verloren.

The tempo was (also according to the FMJD rules) 50 moves in two hours and one hour for the next 25 moves. This applied both for Georgiev and for his opponents. However, the very important difference is that of course Georgiev can only be at one board at the same time and during that time all his clocks are running where the opponents have made a move! This means in practice that Georgiev had to make his round at 42 boards as quickly as possible and had very little time to think about a move. Most of the time he played immediately.
This situation implies a need for a clear tactical approach. As Alexander told me his first goal was to reach the 50 moves without losing (or only a few) games, either by the clock or otherwise. The second plan was to play without much risk, but solid and taking the chances to win when the opportunity is there. It sounds logical, but it is extremely difficult when you have to do 2100 moves in four hours!!

The first game demonstrated in this article shows how Georgiev applied this tactics. His opponent is Teun van Gelder. We see a calm start with solid play of Georgiev. Nothing spectacular happens, so you can play the first Applet automatically. This is about the same speed as Georgiev played! Each opponent played very much slower.

[White ""][Black ""]1. 33-29 17-22 2. 39-33 11-17 3. 44-39 6-11 4. 50-44 19-23 5. 32-28 23x32 6. 37x28 20-25 7. 41-37 14-19 8. 46-41 10-14 9. 37-32 22-27 10. 31x22 18x27 11. 32x21 17x26 12. 41-37 5-10 13. 37-32 11-17 14. 29-24 19x30 15. 35x24 14-19 16. 40-35 19x30 17. 35x24 10-14 18. 44-40 12-18 19. 42-37 17-21 20. 47-42 7-11 21. 37-31 26x37 22. 32x41 11-17 23. 41-37 1-7 24. 37-31 18-22 25. 34-29 21-27 26. 42-37 8-12 27. 38-32 27x38 28. 43x32 14-20 29. 48-43 7-11 30. 43-38 16-21 31. 31-26 11-16 32. 37-31

The game becomes much more interesting now. Georgiev has achieved that his position is solid, the opponent has the difficult choises. Teun van Gelder plays the agressive and also the best move (21-27). Georgiev continues with playing solid moves.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W24,26,28,29,31,32,33,36,38,39,40,45,49:B2,3,4,9,12,13,15,16,17,20,21,22,25."] 1... 21-27 2. 32x21 16x27 3. 40-34 3-8 4. 45-40 9-14 5. 28-23 13-18 6. 38-32 27x38 7. 33x42 2-7 8. 42-38 7-11 9. 31-27 22x31 10. 26x37 17-22 11. 49-43 4-9 12. 39-33 9-13 13. 36-31 14-19 14. 23x14 20x9 15. 38-32 11-16 16. 32-28 12-17 17. 43-38 16-21 18. 31-26

Georgiev just completed his 49th move and he had 2 seconds left on the clock for his 50th. One second for a move, the other one second for stopping his clock. He waited for Teun to move. Teun van Gelder had a few seconds more and still two moves to go. Teun saw that (21-27) and (9-14) were losing immediately and that (8-12) 28-23 (22-27) 37-32 (18-22) 23-18 was losing as well. In four seconds Teun and Alexander played (22-27) 37-32 (9-14). Both players were relieved that they survived the time check. Georgiev hurried to the next board.

So far what happened. Now the analyses. It is very wel understandable that Teun made a mistake when calculating (8-12). The variant below shows why.

- (8-12) 28-23 (21-27!!) 37-32 (15-20, 9-14, 13-19)=.

However, there is much more to say about these last seconds before the time control. First of all White can avoid the immediate draw after (8-12) 28-23 (21-27). See the next Applet. Special attention for the move (17-21!!).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W24,26,28,29,33,34,37,38,40:B8,9,13,15,17,18,21,22,25."] 1... 8-12 2. 28-23 21-27 3. 40-35 27-31 4. 38-32 31x42 5. 32-27 22x31 6. 26x48 17-21 7. 23-19 25-30 8. 19x26 30x28 9. 26-21 28-32 10. 48-42 18-22 11. 29-23 22-27 12. 23-18 27x16 13. 18-12 16-21 14. 12-7 21-26

A very surprising draw. However, Georgiev would have played differently after (8-12), probably with the same 37-32 as in the game. The next Applet is even more amazing. Each move of Black is forced! Please play it slowly!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W24,26,28,29,33,34,37,38,40:B8,9,13,15,17,18,21,22,25."] 1... 8-12 2. 37-32 9-14 3. 24-20 15x24 4. 29x9 13x4 5. 34-29 4-9 6. 40-34 9-13 7. 28-23 22-27 8. 34-30 25x34 9. 29x40 18x29 10. 33x24 12-18 11. 24-20 13-19 12. 20-15 17-22 13. 26x28 18-23 14. 32x21 23x43

Georgiev played the game extremely well, but not only that (8-12) is a draw in all variants, there was never a moment before the 49th move that the position was winning! A compliment for Teun of course. Only at the very last moment it went wrong for him.

Teun played (22-27). Georgiev won by playing 37-32! and reached the 50 moves in time. There is no doubt that 37-32 is winning in all variants. So it would be not a wise remark to say that Alexander should have taken the combination. Of course Georgiev should not have taken the combination wit 24-19. Nobody can calculate the combination and the resulting end game with only one solution in one second! How Georgiev finished the game is shown by the next Applet.

Teun speelde (22-27).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W24,26,28,29,33,34,37,38,40:B8,9,13,15,17,18,21,22,25."] 1... 22-27 2. 37-32 9-14 3. 24-20 15x24 4. 29x9 13x4 5. 34-29 4-9 6. 40-34 8-12 7. 29-24 9-13 8. 34-29 18-22

Teun van Gelder gave up, before Georgiev played the next move. Of course 29-23 wins easily. However, against a less brilliant player than Georgiev, he could have hoped for 28-23. See what could not have happened, because Georgiev does not make such a mistake after the 50th move, when he is no longer under time pressure!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W24,26,28,29,32,33,38:B12,13,17,21,22,25,27."] 1. 28-23 27-31 2. 26x37 21-27 3. 32x21 17x26 4. 38-32 12-18 5. 23x12 13-19 6. 24x13 22-27 7. 32x21 26x19

Another example of a World Record game where Georgiev applies his tactics is the game against Tjipke Smedinga. In recent years Smedinga became interested in draughts composing and published a number of nice compositions. In this game he shows that he is not afraid of taking riscs, but gets first with luck not and later really into trouble.

[White ""][Black ""]1. 32-28 18-23 2. 33-29 23x32 3. 37x28 13-18 4. 39-33 19-23 5. 28x19 14x23 6. 44-39 20-25 7. 50-44 10-14 8. 41-37 14-20 9. 46-41 8-13 10. 33-28 23x32 11. 37x28 20-24 12. 29x20 25x14 13. 39-33 2-8 14. 44-39 5-10 15. 41-37 14-19 16. 38-32 10-14 17. 42-38 19-24 18. 47-42 17-21 19. 31-27 21-26 20. 49-44 14-19 21. 34-29 4-10 22. 29x20 15x24 23. 40-34 10-15 24. 44-40 9-14 25. 34-30 18-23 26. 39-34 12-18 27. 43-39 7-12 28. 30-25 11-17

The last move of Black (11-17) was not a lucky one. From a tactical point of view this is an interesting position. Georgiev plays very fast according to his tactics the solid 34-30. In a normal game this would be called a mistake because 48-43 prevents (3-9) by 34-29, 40 x 20, 35-30, 25-20, 28-22, 32 x 3. So Black is forced to play (15-20) with substantial advantage for White. However, Georgiev will prove that his tactics are right.
We continue till Tjipke makes his next and fatal mistake.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W25,27,28,32,33,34,35,36,37,38,39,40,42,45,48:B1,3,6,8,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,23,24,26."] 1. 34-30 3-9 2. 39-34 17-21 3. 34-29 23x34 4. 40x20 15x24 5. 45-40 18-23 6. 40-34 13-18 7. 28-22 9-13 8. 33-29 24x33 9. 38x29 6-11 10. 42-38 1-6

The fatal error was (13-18?) and (9-13?) made it even a bit worse. After (8-13) Georgiev would haven won as well, but it would have cost more time.
The game has reached its climax. The computer program Kingsrow now tells us that after 29-24 White reaches a winning position. Of course that is true, but with still 12 moves before time-check to play and 33 other games left, 29-24 is not the best move! It does not make sense reaching a winning position and losing on the clock! For 29-24 calculations have to be made such as (23-28) etc. or (11-17) 24-20 (17-22) 20 x 9 (22 x 33) and 9-3 is a draw now. Only 9-4 wins, according to the world´s best computer program. So the choice of Georgiev, the strike of genius to play 25-20!!, 38 -33, is the right one. It is also true that Kingsrow finds the best defense with (26-31!!), but also in that case Georgiev still holds the better position. It was far more likely that Tjipke would play (11-17) and after that Georgiev did not not have no problem anymore to win as the next Applet shows. At the end when the position was hopeless for Tjipke he played (25-30) instead of what is showed by the Applet. I preferred a beautiful thematic ending of this fantastic simultaneous game! Tjipke Smedinga as a draughts composer likes that as well, I hope.

Georgiev played solid, but with the goal to win. Of course he executed a number of combinations during this World Record. I only give one example. It is a forcing in what looks as a position without any danger for Black. With 45-40 Georgiev hoped that Black would like to keep the formation 7-12-18. Indeed Black played (6-11?) and then the game was over after 33-28!! Of course (15-20) is forced now and after 39-33! Siep Hamstra played (11-17) that was followed by 28-23, 37-31, 27-22, 38-32, 42 x 2. The only other move (20-24) is losing immediately as well. See the next Applet.

Georgiev lost only two games of the 42! He lost these the because of the time check, but the positions were a clear draw. Actually during all the moves of all the 42 games Georgiev was never in a lost position!! Below the Dutch text we see which minimum score was required with only two lost games. Alexander did very much better!

Minimum: + 19, = 21, - 2. 70 %

World Record: + 28, = 12, -2. 81%!!

A fantastic World Record. One of the greatest achievements concerning draughts ever!

The 29 Steps

The first and famous movie of Alfred Hitchcock was called "The 39 Steps". It is a thrilling masterpiece about a man who is trying to solve a crime. However, the criminal makes it very difficult for the man. Surprise after surprise and all that time the man cannot afford any wrong move.
My composition contains a number of surprises as well and White cannot afford any wrong move either. However the solution takes "only" 29 steps!

We follow the solution step by step. It is not wise playing the Applets automatically, because then a number of subtle aspects will be unnoticed. Anyway, the solution is interrupted with a next Applet when one of both colours has to take a difficult decision. The tempo difference is very large, but with moves like 32-27 or 26-21 White does not have any chance to win! After 39-34! Black is forced to play (20-25). See the short variants below. Later the sacrifice 23-18! is the only way to win!

39-34 (2-8) 23-18. 29 x 18 w+
39-34 (12-17) 34-30 (2-8, 9-13) 22-18! (13 x 22) 35-30! w+

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,26,29,32,33,35,39:B2,5,6,9,12,20,24."] 1. 39-34 20-25 2. 29x20 25x14 3. 23-18 12x23 4. 33-29 23-28 5. 32x23 9-13 6. 35-30

Now by playing (13-19) Black seems to win a piece or will get a free way to promotion. And indeed, White will lose one piece, but win the game!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W23,26,29,30,34:B2,5,6,13,14."] 1... 13-19 2. 23-18 19-23 3. 30-24 23x12 4. 24-19 14x23 5. 29x7 2x11 6. 26-21 5-10 7. 34-29 10-14 8. 29-24

So Black has to play differently. After (14-20) 30-25 Black keeps the draw. However White plays 30-24! and after (20-25) the Applets are reached. The next two Applets show what happens when White plays 26-21.

Zwart moet dus anders spelen.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,24,26,29,34:B2,5,6,13,25."] 1. 26-21 6-11 2. 23-19 11-16 3. 19x8 2x13 4. 21-17 13-18 5. 24-19 5-10 6. 29-24 16-21 7. 17x26 18-22 8. 19-13 22-28 9. 13-8 28-32 10. 8-2 32-37 11. 2-19 37-42 12. 19x5 42-47 13. 24-19 47-36 14. 34-29 25-30

Black survives in this case. However, White can do better and then Black can only hope for a miracle!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,24,26,29,34:B2,5,6,13,25."] 1. 26-21 6-11 2. 21-17 11x22 3. 23-18 22-27 4. 18x9 27-31 5. 9-3

It seems that Black has to surrender, because 31-37 or 31-36 are both losing immediately. The miracle is that with (5-10!!) Black achieves a draw in all variants:

- 3-26 (25-30, 30 x 39)=.
- 24-19 (31-37) 3-14 (37-42, 42-47)=.
- 34-30 (25 x 23) 3-26 (31-36) 26-37 (36-41!)=.
- 9-4 (31-36!)=.

So we go on with not playing 26-21.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,24,26,29,34:B2,5,6,13,25."] 1. 23-19 5-10 2. 19x8 2x13 3. 29-23 10-14 4. 34-29 25-30 5. 24x35 13-19 6. 23-18 19-23 7. 18-12 23x34 8. 35-30 34x25 9. 12-8 25-30 10. 8-3 30-35 11. 3x20 35-40 12. 20-33 40-45 13. 33-50 6-11 14. 50x6 45-50 15. 26-21 50-45 16. 6-1 45-50

Obviously something went wrong here. First we saw that 26-21? leads to a draw. The last Applet shows that not playing 26-21 leads to a draw as well! The explanation is that 26-21 is winning a few moves later because then the end game above has a different final position! First 26-21 is wrong. Later it is the only one winning! Effects like that improve the quality of a composition. See the Applet below.

Eerst is 26-21 fout.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W23,24,26,29,34:B2,5,6,13,25."] 1. 23-19 5-10 2. 19x8 2x13 3. 29-23 10-14 4. 26-21 6-11 5. 34-29 25-30 6. 24x35 13-19 7. 23-18 19-23 8. 18-12 23x34 9. 35-30 34x25 10. 12-8 14-19 11. 21-16 19-23 12. 16x7 23-28 13. 7-1 28-33 14. 8-3 33-38 15. 1-29 38-43 16.29-20 25x14 17. 3x48

This is a clear win, but of course it is not the main variant of the composition. Black can defend himself much better, playing in such a way that White cannot promote to a King right away. However, with 35-30 and the sacrifice 30-24! White reaches the winning position with three thematic variants!

- 5 x 5. Now 26-21? is just a draw. Nu is 26-21? nog net remise. One more thematic variant.
- 6 x 6. Only a sacrifice wins. Alleen maar winst door een offer.
- 7 x 7. The All in One composition. De compositie die alles heeft.

A (very) long term sacrife

When I was young I was more a player than a draughts-composer. This article shows a game I played longer than 50 years ago against Jan Belien when we were both under 20 years old. Jan Belien was a talented player, the best of all the Belien brothers living in Heemstede,a suburb from Haarlem, where I lived as well at that time.

Both players played to win. As you will see during the first Applet we both refused to execute large exchanges and try to play as sharp as possible, during the whole game. The most interesting aspect of the game comes later on. Black sacrifices one piece intentionally and plays with a minority of one during 20 moves! Jan Belien played with White.

Jan Belien had wit.

[White ""][Black ""]1. 33-28 18-23 2. 39-33 12-18 3. 44-39 7-12 4. 31-27 17-21 5. 34-30 20-24 6. 30-25 21-26 7. 40-34 11-17 8. 50-44 17-21 9. 34-30 1-7 10. 44-40

As can be expected from a game 50 years ago, it looks like an old fashioned game, but one could write a book about this opening and the many interesting variants it contains. I played (14-20!) here. A totally different game would have resulted from (7-11). See the next Applet where Black comes into trouble.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W25,27,28,30,32,33,35,36,37,38,39,40,41,42,43,45,46,47,48,49:B2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,12,13,14,15,16,18,19,21,23,24,26."] 1... 7-11 2. 37-31 26x37 3. 42x31 21-26 4. 41-37 14-20 5. 25x14 9x20 6. 30-25 10-14 7. 39-34 4-9 8. 34-29 23x34 9. 40x29 2-7 10. 29-23 18x29 11. 45-40 13-18 12. 35-30 24x44 13. 33x4 44-50 14. 4x22 8-13 15. 22x4 50x17 16. 4-18 12x23 17. 27-21 16x27 18. 32x1

Anyway, I did not play (7-11), but (14-20!) and the game went on as the next Applet. At the 17th move (move 8 of the Applet) Jan plays 40-34. This is very well understandable because 39-34 is not possible and all other moves are not attractive. Many years later, in 1971, Iser Koeperman followed Jan´s example and played 40-34 as well!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W25,27,28,30,32,33,35,36,37,38,39,40,41,42,43,45,46,47,48,49:B2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,12,13,14,15,16,18,19,21,23,24,26."] 1... 14-20 2. 25x14 9x20 3. 30-25 10-14 4. 37-31 26x37 5. 42x31 21-26 6. 41-37 4-9 7. 47-42 7-11 8. 40-34 24-30 9. 35x24 20x40 10. 45x34 14-20 11. 25x14 9x20 12. 34-30 20-24 13. 30-25 3-9 14. 49-44 9-14 15. 44-40 5-10 16. 40-35 2-7

We are now at the the first highlight of the game. 27-22 or 46-41 bring clear advantage to Black. Moreover after 39-34 white has several chances.
- 39-34 (23-29,18 x 29)27-21!! followed by 25-20 and 28-22.
- (24-30)35 x 24 (19 x 39)43 x 34 ! (15-20) 28 x 19 (13 x 24)27-22, 31 x 22 (24-30) 33-28 (30 x 39)22-18 (12 x 23) 28 x 19 (14 x 23) 25 x 5 (23-29) 5-23!! 38-33, 32 x 1.
- (24-29)33 x 24 (19 x 39) 43 x 34 (23-29) 35-30.
- (16-21, 18-22, 12 x 21,24-30, 19 x 28) W+1 43-39, 38-33, etc. 3x.

However, I accepted losing one piece, because I saw a lot of compensation, with chances to win.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W25,27,28,31,32,33,35,36,37,38,39,42,43,46,48:B6,7,8,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,18,19,23,24,26."] 1. 39-34 16-21 2. 27x16 18-22 3. 28x17 12x21 4. 16x27 24-30 5. 35x24 19x28 6. 43-39 7-12 7. 38-33 12-17 8. 33x22 17x28 9. 42-38 8-12 10. 38-33 12-18 11. 33x22 15-20

I was now definitely one piece in minority. It will take 20 moves before the number of pieces is equalized again! During those 20 moves there is at least one exciting moment to which the next Applet leads.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W22,25,27,31,32,36,37,39,46,48:B6,10,11,13,14,18,20,23,26."] 1. 48-43 20-24 2. 43-38 14-19 3. 38-33

Black seems to reach an end game with advantage easily now by playing (10-14). Jan was very much hoping that I would play like that! However,I saw the surprising combination in time!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W22,25,27,31,32,33,36,37,39,46:B6,10,11,13,18,19,23,24,26."] 1... 10-14 2. 33-28 24-29 3. 46-41 11-16 4. 22-17 29-33 5. 17-12 33x44 6. 27-22 18x38 7. 12-7 23x32 8. 37x28 26x46 9. 7-1 46x23 10. 1x20

Black can play stronger after (10-14) 33-28, but there is no win in all variants. A far better idea is what I played. My (23-29!!) proved to be winning. We continue the game till the moment that the clearly winning position is reached.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:W22,25,27,31,32,33,36,37,39,46:B6,10,11,13,18,19,23,24,26."] 1... 23-29 2. 46-41 29x38 3. 32x43 24-29 4. 43-38 10-14 5. 38-32 19-23 6. 39-33 29x38 7. 32x43 23-29

The pointe is now that 43-39 is followed rather surprisingly by the immediatelly winning (11-17!!, 6 x 17). Jan made it more difficult for me by playing 43-38!, but could not prevent that I reached a winning end game.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W22,25,27,31,36,37,41,43:B6,11,13,14,18,26,29."] 1. 43-38 11-17 2. 22x11 6x17 3. 38-32 18-23 4. 27-21 13-18 5. 21x12 18x7 6. 31-27 29-34 7. 27-22 34-39 8. 32-28 23x32 9. 37x28 39-44 10. 28-23 44-50 11. 23-19 14x23

At move 35 Black sacrificed one piece, At move 56 the material is equalized, but obviously in a winning position for Black. However, Jan Belien kept on defending himself as good as possible. We continue the game till the decisive moment of the end game.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W22,25,36,41:B7,23,26,K50."] 1. 25-20 50x17 2. 20-14 17-28 3. 14-9 28x46 4. 9-3

The last hope for Jan Belien was that I played here (23-29?). In that case Jan would reach a quite surprising draw by playing 3-9!!, followed by 36-31!. Also (23-28?) would be a draw. However, I played it as the final Applet, with (27-32!) at the end leaving White without any chance. Any other field than 32 would be a draw. A more complicated way to win would have been (26-31).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:WK3,36:B7,23,26,K46."] 1... 46-32 2. 3-20 7-11 3. 20-33 11-16 4. 33-20 32-27 5. 20-42 23-28 6. 42-47 28-32 7. 47-15 32-37 8. 15-4 27-32 9. 36-31 37-41

Thanks to the way of playing of Jan Belien this game became something special.
Later Jan was seriously hurt by a terrible accident. Jan survived, but with lasting injuries.
Thanks to his strong character he could manage the situation, is stll living and is, in his own words, 75 years young.

Funny position. Both White and Black win with 46/5

This article was inspired by a miniature of Evgraf Zubov, one of the greatest draughts composers. The climax is a superb 46/5 final.

Evgraf Zubov

I took the liberty of extending his composition from 6 to 11 moves, resulting in a better initial position and a less obvious solution. However, the most important part of the composition is the idea of Evgraf. Black cannot reach promotion in a normal way, but sees a spectacular way of reaching a draw by a combination resulting in capturing at least three pieces of White. However, White replies with the brilliant moves 22!! and 23!!. See the first Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W6,21,28,32,35,41,42:B1,4,12,14,25,29."] 1. 28-22 29-33 2. 22-17 12-18 3. 17-11 33-39 4. 11-7 1x12 5. 6-1 25-30 6. 35x24 14-20 7. 24x15 4-10 8. 15x4 39-43 9. 4x22 43-48 10. 1x23

However, the title of this article has to do with a variation of the idea. The next Applet with Black to move shows the same idea, but replaced a bit to the right side. We see the same win of White.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:WK2,17,28,29,31,41,43:B8,10,13,19,44."] 1... 19-24 2. 29x20 10-14 3. 20x18 44-49 4. 2x19 49x46 5. 19-5

Of course this is not an improvement of the original idea. The reason of showing this position anyway is a very unusual one. The unique situation is that the position not only contains a 46/5 win of White, but also a 46/5 win for Black!!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "B:WK2,17,28,29,31,41,43:B8,10,13,19,44."] 1... 19-23 2. 29x9 44-49 3. 2x5 49x46

I do not know of any other position with two possible combinations of which one is a winning 46/5 and the other a suicide 46/5. If somebody knows another example, please inform me.

Exceptional 46/5 miniatures Third and last part

The first part of three articles about exceptional 46 / 5 miniatures contains a composition where both Andreas Kuyken and I contributed parts. The second article is dedicated to a composition of Andreas. This third article presents and explains a 46 / 5 miniature made by me more than one year ago.

First of all I explain the first few moves because for understanding the solution it is good to know why the first moves of the main variant are the best way to play for both colours. I give a few variants in order to come to a conclusion.

- 12-7 (6-11) 7 x 16 (23 of 24-29?) 40-35! (34) 44-39, 38 x 49 w+
- 12-7 (6-11) 7 x 16 (25-30!) 40-35? (23-28!) 32 x 23 (31-36) 41-37 (30-34)16-11 (34-40) 44-39 (40-45) 11-7 (45-50) 39-34 (24-29) 34-30 (29 x 18) =.
- 12-7 (6-11) 7 x 16 (25-30!) 41-36? (24-29, 13-18) 40-35 (29-34, 23-29, 34-39) =.

Conclusion: After (25-30) White can never play 40-35 and cannot prevent (30-34) later on. In other words the first part of the solution is:

12-7 (6-11) 7 x 16 (25-30) 16-11 (24-29) 11-7

From 11-7 on Black has four relevant ways of trying to reach a draw. The first of them is presented by the Applet below. It is not the best defence, though White needs a lot of moves to win, because White can win in several different ways. However, it is worth playing the Applet because White chooses the opportunity to reach a very spectacular final with two Black Kings!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W12,32,38,40,41,42,44:B6,13,14,23,24,25,31."] 1. 12-7 6-11 2. 7x16 25-30 3. 16-11 24-29 4. 11-7 31-36 5. 41-37 30-34 6. 40-35 34-40 7. 7-2 40x49 8. 2x28 29-34 9. 28x5 49-44 10. 5-23 34-39 11. 23-5 44-50 12. 37-31 36x27 13. 32x21 39-44 14. 5-28 44-49 15. 38-33 49x16 16. 42-38 16x49 17. 28-6 50x17 18. 6x44 49x40 19. 35x44

The next Applets with the other variants start with 11-7. The second attempt of Black to reach a draw does not give White much choice how to win. Special attention please for 1 x 9!!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W11,32,38,40,41,42,44:B13,14,23,29,30,31."] 1. 11-7 31-36 2. 41-37 13-18 3. 7-1 29-33 4. 38x29 23x45 5. 1x9 45-50 6. 9-4 50x47 7. 4-15 36-41 8. 37x46 47-36 9. 15-4 36-47 10. 46-41 47x36 11. 32-27

The third attempt by Black not only gives White only one way to win, 42-37!!, but also ends by a big stroke over 5 pieces that is quite unusual in end games. In a silly dream I executed this combination. My opponent took the piece at 41, said that I did not need it and then gave up!

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W11,32,38,40,41,42,44:B13,14,23,29,30,31."] 1. 11-7 13-18 2. 42-37 31x33 3. 7-2 30-34 4. 2-16 34x45 5. 44-39 33x44 6. 32-28 23x32 7. 16x50

We arrive now at the main variant. It is the most logical way to play for Black, (30-34) directly. It looks easy for White, but that is not the case.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W11,32,38,40,41,42,44:B13,14,23,29,30,31."] 1. 11-7 30-34 2. 7-1 34x45 3. 44-40 45x34 4. 1-6 31-37 5. 42x31 34-40 6. 6-50 40-45 7. 31-26 29-34 8. 26-21 34-40 9. 41-37 23-28 10. 50x20 45-50

A real surprise, it is impossible to win this variant! However, as in the previous variant White has a secret weapon: 42-37!! The last Applet gives the full solution of this remarkable miniature.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W12,32,38,40,41,42,44:B6,13,14,23,24,25,31."] 1. 12-7 6-11 2. 7x16 25-30 3. 16-11 24-29 4. 11-7 30-34 5. 42-37 31x33 6. 7-2 34x45 7. 2x39 45-50 8. 39-34

When we think of 46/5, we think of Jan Pennings. How nice would it have been if we could have shown these miniatures to him! Probably he would have made a limerick right away!

"Jan Pennings collected all his life.
All he could find on 46 / 5.
Unfortunately Jan is no longer with us.
He is honoured here by Kuyken and Bus"

Exceptional 46/5 miniatures Part 2 (of three)

The first part of the 46/5 exceptional miniatures articles presented a composition that was a result of cooperation between Andreas Kuyken and me. This second article is dedicated to a splendid composition of Andreas.

Starting with the very satisfactory initial position it is very clear that after 30-25, Black does not have any other change than (36-41). Even that looks rather hopeless for Black, because after 25 x 3 (41-47) 42-38 (47 x 15 or 29) 22-18, 3 x 1 Black does not have any chance to survive. See the first Applet.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W22,28,30,32,37,42:B7,8,9,12,20,36."] 1. 30-25 36-41 2. 25x3 41-47 3. 42-38 47x29 4. 22-18 12x23 5. 3x1

It is also clear that so far there is nothing that deserves the classification excellent. However, the real surprises are still to come! Black has a very remarkable, brilliantly found, defense by playing (12-17!!) and (41-47!).

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W22,28,30,32,37,42:B7,8,9,12,20,36."] 1. 30-25 36-41 2. 25x3 12-17 3. 22x13 41-47

This the highlight of the composition. It is 6 to 1. White has only two ways to keep 4 pieces of which 3-9 ( 47 x 3) is without any doubt a draw. This means that White has to play 13-8. The difference is that after (47 x 2) White is winning by 28-22 (2-16) 22-17, 37-32. However, Black has a better one : (47 x 16!). The climax is shown by the next Applet containing the full main variant.

Daarvan is 3-9 (47 x 3) zonder twijfel remise.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W22,28,30,32,37,42:B7,8,9,12,20,36."] 1. 30-25 36-41 2. 25x3 12-17 3. 22x13 41-47 4. 13-8 47x16 5. 28-23 16-2 6. 3-14

As encore I present a miniature of Jan van Tol. His name is a guarantee for something special. This miniature is not of the Champions League level as the main miniatures of the three articles. But also this one of Jan van Tol contains a very special moment.

[White ""][Black ""][Setup "1"][FEN "W:W18,28,29,33,37,43,44:B2,7,8,10,14,30,32."] 1. 18-12 32x34 2. 12x1 2-7 3. 1x25 34-39 4. 43x34 30x50 5. 25-14 50x46 6. 14x5

Do you see why White should not take 1 x 20?

Zie je waarom 1 x 20 slaan fout is?
