World Championship Draughts Composition PWCE III 2019 /2020

An endgame with comments. Een eindspel met commentaar.

The start of this Blog article gives an endgame as an example with the purpose of showing that it is not easy to find a solution without any false move. It does not make any sense to play the solutions without studying each move, or even worse to play the endgame automatically. Each move deserves to be studied, both the White moves as well as the Black ones.

Het begin van dit Blog artikel laat een eindspel zien als een voorbeeld met het doel te laten zien dat het niet zo eenvoudig is om een oplossing te vinden zonder een foutieve zet. Het is onzinnig de oplossing te spelen zonder iedere zet te bestuderen, of nog erger the eindspel automatisch te spelen. Iedere zet verdient het te bestuderen zowel de witte als de zwarte zetten.

When you study this endgame you will see that 9. 29-23 is false. The right reply is 35-8 =, but 35-13 is false as well, so that White is able to win again. See the second Blog endgame. The complete solution will be published later.

Als je dit eindspel bestudeerd zal je zien dat 9. 29-23 is niet goed is. Dan komt 35-8 =. Maar 35-13 is ook fout, zodat Wit weer winnen kan. Zie het tweede Blog eindspel. De volledige oplossing wordt later gepubliceerd.

The World Championship Endgame Composition PWCE III

At the moment that I write this Blog article the endgame composers have sent their participating compositions to the contact person responsible for presenting the compositions to the jury. The jury consists of endgame experts from several countries.
This article does not show one of the participating compositions of course, but an endgame that is only an example of a sophisticated endgame in order to understand how these endgames are presented.

Op het moment dat ik dit Blog artikel schrijf hebben de eindspel componisten hun deelnemende composities gezonden naar de contact-persoon verantwoordelijk voor het aanbieden van de composities aan de jury. De jury bestaat uit eindspel-kenners uit verschillende landen.
Dit artikel laat natuurlijk geen van de deelnemende eindspelen zien, maar een eindspel dat slechts een voorbeeld van een eindspel van niveau is om te laten zien hoe dit soort eindspel wordt gepresenteerd.

At both variants all the moves of White are the only winning moves. The endgame is fully thematic. Voor beide varianten geldt dat iedere witte zet de enige is die wint. Het eindspel. is volkomen scherp.
Black plays in such a way that White has only one way to win. Zwart speelt zo dat wit slechts één winnende zet heeft.

It is also interesting that when White makes any mistake, Black can force a draw, but only when Black always takes the only right move. Het is ook interessant dat als wit een fout maakt, zwart een remise kan forceren, maar alleen als Zwart steeds de enige juiste zet speelt.

This is the prove that White cannot win with playing 1. 24-19. The way to win starts with a brilliant sacrifice! Black has to respond with also a sacrifice, because otherwise Black goes too fast to promotion.

This article contains a number of miniatures resulting at outstanding 4 x 4 endgames, with thematic variants and surprising false solutions. The readers will be familiar with it. Every move of White is the only way to win or when it is a false solution all the Black moves are the only ones to reach a draw.

Finally an endgame without an introduction of a miniature. The first variant has to be played very precisely, otherwise the Black King would escape, but the second variant is far more beautiful.

Computer Draughts Tournament 2019

At Amersfoort The Netherlands a computer tounament was organized at May 19 2019, both for chess as for draughts. The idea for this combination came from Jan Krabbenbos, who also contributed to the organization of this event. This article is restricted to draughts. As usual Leo Nagels organized this computer draughts event. Unfortunately I could not be present and not be the referee because I was in Thailand at that time. My only contribution was the preparation of the playing schedule. A computer draughts tournament not only needs a scheme of who plays at every round, but also who has to move to another place with his computer,etc. and who can stay. Leo and I discussed it and we agreed about the schedule for the 56 games! This article shows a number of games including all the computer programs present,each with at least one winning game! Te Amersfoort werd een computer toernooi georganiseerd op 19 mei 2019, zowel voor schaken als voor dammen. Het idee voor deze combinatie kwam van Jan Krabbenbos, die ook bijdroeg aan de organisatie van dit evenement. Dit artikel beperkt zich tot dammen. Zoals gebruikelijk organiseerde Leo Nagels dit computer-dam toernooi. Jammer genoeg kon ik niet aanwezig zijn en niet de scheidsrechter zijn omdat ik op dat moment in Thailand was. Mijn enige bijdrage was het uitwerken van het speel rooster. Een computer dam toernooi heeft niet alleen nodig voor wie op welk moment speelt bij elke ronde, maar ook wie verhuizen moet naar een andere plaats met zijn computer etc. en wie er kan blijven zitten. Leo en ik bespraken dit en wij werden het eens over het schema van de 56 partijen! Human players very often miss a winning opportunity halfway at the game, but even more at the endgame phase! The first Applet starts with 49-44? The first variant is,de eerste variant is: 49-44 (21-27) 32 x 21 (17 x 26) 39-34 (14-20) 25 x 5 (3-8) 5 x 23 (18 x 49) 50-44 (49 x 40) 35 x 44 (12-18). This is a draw probably. Dit is waarschijnlijk remise. That is why Black plays 3. (12-17!!). Daarom speelt zwart 3.(12-17!!) The Applet gives the right winning variant. The killing move is 22. (15-20!!). De Applets beginnen niet op de eerste zet van de partij, maar op de eerste slechte zet, in de meeste gevallen genoeg voor de zege van de tegenstander! De menselijke spelers missen vaak een winnende mogelijkheid halfweg de partij, maar nog meer in de eindspel fase! De eerste Applet begint met 49-44? De doodsteek is 22. (15-20!!). GWD- Moby Dam

The climax of course was the battle between Sjende Blyn and Moby Dam. The first game between the two became a draw. The next one was decisive for the championship. The fatal wrong move was 35. (7-12?). Sjende Blyn took advantage of this error and played very well to victory. De climax was natuurlijk de strijd tussen Sjende Blyn en Moby Dam. De eerste partij tussen deze beiden eindigde in een remise. De volgende was beslissend voor het kampioenschap. De fatale ongelukkige zet was 35. (7-12?). Sjende Blyn haalde zijn voordeel uit deze fout en speelde uitstekend naar de overwinning. Moby Dam continued to play in a clearly lost position. He did so because his last hope was that Sjende Blyn could get a problem with the clock. In that case he would propose a draw. However, Sjende Blyn had no problems with his timing. Moby Dam speelde verder in een duidelijk verloren positie. Hij deed zo omdat zijn laatste hoop was dat Sjende Blyn een probleem met de klok zou kunnen krijgen. This was the way Sjende Blyn became the Champion of the Dutch Open tournament 2019. Dit was de manier waarop Sjende Blyn de Kampioen werd van het Open Nederlandse toernooi 2019. The eight Computer Draughts programs are about half of all Computer draughts programs worldwide. When I get a number of reactions concerning this article maybe I publish another computer draughts article. De acht Computer Dam programma´s zijn ongeveer de helft van de Computer Dam programma´s wereldwijd. Als ik een aantal reacties op dit artikel krijg zal ik wellicht een ander computer dam artikel publiceren.

The World Champions Match 2018-19

When I got a heavy cold and must stay at home it was an opportunity for me to study the games of the World Championship Match 2018/2019 between Alexander Shvartsman and Roel Boomstra. I analysed most of the games rather in depth. This resulted at the idea to write an article on my Blog. My comments are not only about the analyses, but also about the match was organized.

Toen ik een zware verkoudheid kreeg en thuis moest bleven was het een gelegenheid voor mij om de partijen te bestuderen van de Wereld Kampioenschap Match 2018/2019 tussen Alexander Shvartsman en Roel Boomstra. Ik analyseerde de meeste partijen nogal diepgaand. Dit resulteerde erin dat ik een Blog artikel erover wilde schrijven. Mijn commentaren gaan niet alleen over de analyses, maar ook over de wijze waarop de match was georganiseerd.

The first game discussed at this Blog article is a nice and high level one. See the inital position of the first Applet. We start at Roel playing 38-33. After (23-29!) 42-38 (8-12) almost all the White moves are punished by Black! See 39-34 (7-11) 34 x 23 (19 x 39) 43 x 34 (18-23) z+. Or 40-34 (29 x 40) 35 x 44 (24-29) 33 x 24 (20 x 29) 44-40 (19-23) z+.

De eerste partij die besproken wordt op dit Blog artikel is een spannende op hoog niveau. We beginnen met waar Roel 38-33 speelt. Na (23-29!) 42-38 (8-12) worden bijna alle witte zetten door zwart bestraft! Zie 39-34 (7-11) 34 x 23 (19 x 39) 43 x 34 (18-23) z+. Of 40-34 (29 x 40) 35 x 44 (24-29) 33 x 24 (20 x 29) 44-40 (19-23) z+.

The Applet contains all the further moves without comments. Both players do not make any mistake. Black becomes closer to promotion, but it is not enough to win the game.

A great game for both players. However, this was not the case for all the games of this World Championship. See the next game.

A position of 6 x 6 was reached. See the initial position of the next Applet. As explained below, Alexander could reach a draw at several very simple ways. One of these is indicated below.

Alexander with extremely lack of time at the clock and under heavy presssure played 34-29??, the losing move, after (9-14!) followed by the even more worse 43-39?? that made it very easy for Roel to win the game. The Applet shows how. With (7-12!) at the right moment.

Alexander in hevige tijdnood en onder zware druk speelde 34-29??, de verliezende zet, na (9-14!) gevolgd door de nog slechtere 43-39?? waardoor het voor Roel nog eenvoudiger werd de partij te winnen. De Applet laat zien hoe. Met (7-12!) op het juiste moment.

This is an example where the available time to play was so limited that the player became under such pressure that he could not make any calculation, took a random piece and hit the clock.

Dit is een voorbeeld waar de beschikbare tijd om te spelen zo beperkt was dat de speler zo onder druk kwam dat hij geen enkele berekening maken kon, een willekeurig stuk koos en een dreun op de klok gaf.

However, it still could be even more strange. Het kon echter nog merkwaardiger.

The end position is a draw, because of (21-27, 30-34!!), but Roel won the game, I suppose because of the clock!!
De slotstand ie remise, vanwege (21-27, 30-34!!) maar Roel won de partij, ik neem aan vanwege de klok!!

The way to win the game at a normal way is given below. The key move to win was given by the computer program of Gérard Taille! That move is the surprising 48-43!! See below.
De manier om normaal te winnen wordt hieronder gegeven. De sleutelzet om te winnen werd gegeven door het computer programma van Gérard Taille. Deze zet is de verrassende 48-43!! Zie onder.

Despite of theses missed marvellous winning moves, it does not change the fact that Roel Boomstra fully deserves his second World Title. His level of playing is extraordinary. Also at games with extremely high tempo, though he does not like that,because of the very high pressure. I find it also wrong from an organizational point of view. It could happen that the World Championship is decided because one of the players collapsed. I will come back to this later when it can be discussed with the FMJD.

Ondanks deze gemiste prachtige winnende zetten, doet het niet af aan het feit dat Roel Boomstra zijn tweede Wereld Titel volkomen verdient. Zijn niveau van spelen is buitengewoon. Ook bij parijen met een extreem hoog tempo, hoewel hij daar niet van houdt, vanwege de extreme druk. Ik vind het ook misplaatst van uit het zicht van de organisatie. Het kan gebeuren dat het Wereldkamioenschap beslist wordt omdat èèn van de spelers instort. Ik kom daar later op terug als het besproken kan worden met de FMJD.

The last Applet brings, without much comments, the extremely well played victory by Roel. A game with normal tempo. It starts with (1-6?). It proves to be the decisive losing move. Roel wins, in spite of the fact the Black does not make any further bad move at all!! See the Applet.

De laatste Applet brengt, zonder veel commentaar, de extreem goed gespeelde winst van Roel. Een partij met normmal speeltempo. Het begint met (1-6?). Het blijkt de beslissende verliezende zet te zijn. Roel wint, hoewel zwart geen enkele verdere slechte zet doet!! Zie de Applet.

To be honest, Black could play one and only one move of all these moves to make it more difficult for White, but it is clear that Roel played a superb number of winning moves!! Grandmaster Roel Boomstra is the right World Champion!

Om eerlijk te zijn, zwart kon één en slechts één van al die zetten spelen die het moeilijker voor wit gemaakt zou hebben, maar het is duidelijk dat Roel een voortreffelijk aantal winnende zetten speelde!! Grootmeester Roel Boomstra is de juiste Wereldkampioen!

A wide variety of combinations and endgames, from unusual to fully thematic.

At the start of the Applet below White plays 29-24 and Black is forced to play (30-35) because (30-34) is loosing quickly, as all of you can ascertain easily. The Applet shows a variant after 29-24 (30-35). This variant is rather strange, does not result into a thematic endgame and is not easy for computer programs.

Vanaf de aanvangsstand van de onderstaande Applet speelt wit 29-24 en zwart is gedwongen (30-35) te spelen omdat (30-34) snel verliest, zoals jullie allemaal eenvoudig kunnen vaststellen. De Applet laat een variant zien na 29-24 (30-35). Deze variant is nogal ongebruikelijk, leidt niet tot een scherpe winst en is niet eenvoudig voor een computer programma.

After the move 49-44! there is no doubt that White has a winning position. Black cannot go forward and White will reach the promotion easily. For a computer program it is not so easy to see the absolute win already after the first moves 29-24 and (30-35). One of the many ways to win shows the next Applet.

Na de zet 49-44! is er geen enkele twijfel dat wit gewonnen staat. Zwart komt niet vooruit en wit bereikt gemakkelijk de promotie. Voor een computer programma is het niet zo eenvoudig de absolute winst reeds te zien na 29-24 en (30-35). Een van de vele manieren om te winnen laat de volgende Applet zien.

This looks like a simple variant, but after 7. 33 x 44 (24-29) one mistake of White is enough for Black to reach a draw. However, Black has to play very precise,
Dit lijkt een eenvoudige variant, maar na 7. 33 x 44 (24-29) is één foutje van wit genoeg voor zwart om remise te maken. Maar dan moet zwart wel uiterst precies spelen.

This is a splendid draw, but the climax is the main winning variant. Dit is een prachtige remise, maar de climax is de winnende hoofdvariant.

This is the right way to play. It seems to be that instead of 8.31-26 the same result could be reached with 8.31-27. However, surprisingly enough, this is not the case, as the final Applet proves.

De bovenstaande oplossing is de juiste. Het lijkt erop dat i.p.v. 8.31-26 hetzelfde resultaat bereikt wordt met 8. 31-27. Echter verrassend genoeg, is dat niet het geval, zoals de laatste Applet laat zien.

A simpler composition. Een eenvoudiger compositie

Compared with the previous Blog article this one below is not that complex, but interesting enough to be published. The first Applet contains the combination and the first moves of the endgame (4-10) and 42-37! After that a very interesting false solution is written with exclamation marks for the moves which are the only ones leading to a draw and are not obvious as well. Vergeleken met het vorige Blog artikel is de volgende niet zo ingewikkeld. De eerste Applet geeft de combinatie en de eerste twee zetten van het eindspel (4-10) en 42-37! Daarna wordt de notatie weergegeven van een heel interessante schijn-oplossing met uitroeptekens bij de zetten die niet alleen de enige zijn die tot remise leiden, maar ook niet vanzelfsprekend zijn.

An amazing 8 x 8

The first of my Blog articles at 2019 shows forcings, several thematic variants, suprising draws and original endgames. The beauty of draughts is demonstrated in many ways. Het eerste Blog artikel van mij in 2019 laat forcings zien en een aantal scherpe varianten, verrassende remises en originele eindspelen. De veelzijdige schoonheid van dammen wordt op verschillende manieren gedemonstreerd. The initial position of the Applet below suggests that White wins very easily. The draw is reached by (33-38) or (28-32)depending on the next move of White. De remise wordt bereikt door (33-38) of (28-32) afhankelijk van de volgende zet van wit. However, the most exciting false solution is the next one. It is not the only one to make a draw, but the fastest and the most spectacular. Maar de spannendste schijn-oplossing is de volgende. Deze is niet de enige die er een remise bereikt, maar de snelste en de meest spectaculaire.

Now is the time to explain how to win. After the first three moves 31-26 (16 x27) 26-21 (27 x16) 20-14 Black has the choice between (9 x 20) or ( 10 x 19). We start with (9 x 20) 25 x 5. What follows is not the most interesting variant, but we have to show that it´s winning, otherwise the composition would not be correct. Nu is het tijd te laten zien hoe te winnen. Na de eerste drie zetten 31-26 (16 x27) 26-21 (27 x 16) 20-14 heeft zwart de keuze tussen (9 x 20) of (10 x 19). Wij beginnen met (9 x 20) 25 x 5. Wat daarna komt is niet de meest interessante variant, maar we moeten aantonen dat het wint, anders zou de compositie niet correct zijn.

The first goal of the main variant is to lead the White King to 48. From that moment on Black has four different ways to start a thematic variant. Black should not play (33-38?)because it is far better to leave the Black at 32. The right choice is (9-13) or (9-14) both leading to two different thematic variants again, so in total four thematic variants. The Applet below gives the solution from the start and includes one of the endgame variants. Het eerste doel van de hoofdvariant is de witte dam naar 48 te leiden. Vanaf daar heeft zwart vier verschillende mogelijkheden om een scherpe variant te beginnen. Zwart moet geen (33-38?) spelen omdat het veel beter is de zwarte op 32 te laten staan. De goede keuze is (9-13) of (9-14) die beide leiden tot twee verschillende varianten, in totaal dus vier scherpe varianten. De volgende Applet geeft de oplossing vanaf de start tot en met één van de scherpe varianten.

The next Applet starts at the endgame phase with the White King at 48 and (9-13) as the first move again, but with a totally different solution. De volgende Applet begint in de eindpel fase met de witte dam op 48 en ((9-13) weer als de eerste zet, maar met een heel andere oplossing.

All the white moves of the main variant and the endgame variants are thematic moves. This implies that this composition has more than 50 thematic moves, so all of them the only ones winning! Alle witte zettten van de hoofdvariant en de eindspel varianten zijn scherpe zetten. Dat betekent dat deze compositie meer dan 50 scherpe zetten heeft,dus elke daarvan is de enige winnende zet!

Spectacular draws, nice Wins and a mission impossible

From the initial position of the Appplet below White plays 11-7. Everybody can see that (2 x 11) is loosing immediately. So Black has to play (12 x 1). The Applet shows how to win.

However, Black can make it far more difficult for White. In other words White could easily make mistakes leading to a draw. A number of them is shown below. After the wrong move of White, each Black move is the only one leading to a draw!

Far more moves of White as listed above lead to a draw. That´s why it is called a Mission Impossible. However, JB (Jason Bourne/Jaap Bus) make the impossible possible as the Applet proves.

play! The next endgame has a number of surprises. We start with a not too complex draw. One of the surprises is that Black waits with (2-7) to play in order to reach the draw !

Superb Draws and Thematic Variants

We start this time with two extraordinary draws. The main surprise of the first draw is the sacrifice 4.(36-41!!). Another one is 8.(3-9!).
Wij beginnen deze keer met twee buitengewone remises. De beste verrassing van de eerste remise is het offer 4. (36-41!!). Een andere is 8.(3-9!).

The last and longest variant remains. The moves of the two White Kings are very precise and logical. Finally a sacrifice of a King leads to one of the best known classic endgames.

More Mini Miracles

The first compostion contains not so really a forcing, but more a compulsive move at the start. After the combination the endgame has three thematic variants. Each of them desserve an Applet.
De eerst compositie bevat niet zo echt een forcing, maar meer een dwangzet aan het begin. Na de combinatie heeft het eindspel drie scherpe varianten. Elke daarvan verdient een Applet.

The next composition is one of the strangest I ever made. Black has a minority of one Man. So White is supposed to win. The obvious way to win is the one shown below.

De volgende compositie is er een van de merkwaardigste die ik ooit gemaakt heb. Zwart heeft een stuk minder. Wit behoort dus te winnen. De meest voor de hand liggende manier om te winnen wordt hieronder aangegeven.

An extraordinary miniature. Een buitengewone miniatuur.

Ton Sijbrands analysed many hundreds of games and published the results of his efforts. Once he came to the position Black 23,28,32 and White 14,35,K 42. Ton could not find how to win. However, the program Truus concluded that 42-31!! is the way to win!.
The moves of the game leading to this position were not thematic at all. That´s why I tried to reach this position in a totally different, thematic, way. For this purpose I replaced 14 to 12 and had to find a solution. The result of all this is showed by the Applet below.

Ton Sijbrands heeft vele honderden partijen geanalyseerd en de resultaten daarvan gepubliceerd. Zo kwam hij eens tot de stand Zwart 23,28,32 en Wit 14,35,D42. Ton kon de winst niet vinden. Maar het programma Truus gaf aan dat 42-31!! de winnende zet is!
De zetten die aan deze positie vooraf gingen hadden niets van een scherpe variant. Daarom probeerde ik die stand op een heel andere, wel scherpe, wijze te bereiken. Zodoende zette ik 14 op 12 en moest vervolgens een heel andere spelgang vinden. Het resultaat daarvan is te zien met onderstaande Applet.

We are close to the climax now, with two Applets left. The suprise in both cases and the way to win is the unusual sacrifice 42-37!! However, this is the only thing they have in common.

Five Favorite "Forse" Forcings

The first Applet of this article shows a composition I published already on my Blog of June 2016. So I do not repeat the comments again. I selected this one for this article because it is an example of a one move forcing. This is of course not the best example of a forcing, it does not even contain an endgame. The combinations make it a pleasure to look at them.
The forcing is 39-34. Black has three relevant answers,(23-28) or (13-19) or (7-11). After (7-11) White has more ways to win than one. The most convincing is the one below:

De eerste Applet van dit artikel laat een compositie zien die ik al eerder publiceerde op mijn Blog van Juni 2016. Ik herhaal daarom mijn commentaar daarbij niet. Ik selecteerde deze voor dit artikel omdat het een forcing is van één zet. Dat is natuurlijk niet het beste voorbeeld van een forcing, Er komt zelfs geen eindspel aan te pas. De combinaties zorgen voor het plezier er naar te kijken.
De forcing is 39-34. Zwart heeft drie relevante antwoorden, (23-28) of (13-19) of (7-11). Na (7-11) heeft wit meer dan één manier om te winnen. De meest overtuigende is hierboven te zien.

The next one also has a minimum of forcing moves before the combination. However, goes to a famous endgame of L. Schut. 1. 41-36 is a draw because of (35-40!).

World Championship endgame and a comparable one.

Studying my many forcings made over the years, I found a forcing made together with Andreas Kuyken. To my surprise this forcing is never published. The forcing contains a moment where white has to capture to 48 and not to 43. However, in another variant 43 is the only way to win! I remembered to have included such an effect many years before, but in a very different position, in another composition. This composition was one of my participating contributions at the first official FMJD World Championship Endgames at 2005. I show you this one first, followed by the one made together with Andreas.

Bij het bekijken van de vele forcings die ik in de loop der jaren gemaakt heb kwam ik een forcing tegen die ik samen met Andreas Kuyken gemaakt heb. Tot mijn verwomdering is die nooit gepubliceerd. Daarin komt een moment voor waar wit naar 48 moet slaan en niet naar 43. Terwijl in een andere variant wit juist naar 43 moet om te winnen! Ik herinnerde mij dat ik dat effect vele jaren eerder. overigens in een heel andere positie, ook in een andere compositie verwerkt had. Deze compositie was er één van de eindspelen waar ik mee deelgenomen heb aan het officieel eerste FMJD Wereld Kampioenschap Eindspelen in 2005. Deze laat ik je eerst zien, gevolgd door die met Andreas samen gemaakt.

This composition got a very high score from the jury, resulting at the second place of the 38 participating compositions. Much later than when I participated I added two sacrifices to the composition. Of course it would have been better when I had included this improvement at the time of my participation!
The first diagram leads to the position with the choice of 48 or 43.

Deze compositie kreeg een heel hoge score van de jury, met als resultaat plaats twee van de 38 deelnemende composities, Veel later dan de deelname heb ik twee offers toegevoegd aan het begin van de compositie. Het zou natuurlijk beter geweest zijn als ik deze verbetering had meegenomen met mijn inzending!
Het eerste diagram leidt tot de positie met de keuze van 48 of 43.

However, for a World Championship it is not enough. First of all there are other thematic variants, but more important for a World Championship is the prove that the variants are fully thematic. Also important is the quality of the false solutions. A false solution is better when a wrong move of a false solution leads to an interesting thematic win! The jury takes that into account and that is why the participant includes these surprising effects. So the participant has to show all these aspects when they can contribute to the score of the jury. This leads to a very extensive solution as shown below. VP means Variante Principal (Hoofdvariant). Z is a false solution. y is a wrong move of a false solution, leading to a thematic win.

Echter voor een Wereld Kampioenschap is dat niet genoeg. Om te beginnen zijn er andere scherpe varianten, maar belangrijker is het bij een Wereld Kampioenschap dat bewezen wordt dat de varianten volkomen scherp zijn, tot en met de allerlaatste zet. Ook belangrijk zijn de schijnoplossingen. Een schijnoplossing is nog beter als één slechte zet van die oplossing leidt tot een interessante scherpe winst! De jury houdt daar rekening mee en dat is waarom de deelnemer deze verrassende effecten meeneemt. De deelnemer doet er dus goed aan deze verrassende effecten te vermelden. De deelnemer moet dus alles laten zien wat tot een hogere beoordeling door de jury bijdraagt. Dit leidt tot een zeer uitgebreide oplossing zoals hieronder weergegeven. VP betekent Variante Principal (hoofdvariant). Z is een schijnoplossing, y is een foutieve zet van een schijnoplossing die leidt tot een scherpe winst.

The first few moves till 3-8 is my contribution, followed with the nice part of Andreas, till the start of my small endgame leading to the classic 46/5 in two directions. The initial position includes several false solutions. I show you only two of them. See the initial position of the Appplet.

Nu de andere compositie. De eerst paar zetten tot 3-8 is mijn bijdrage, gevolgd door het fraaie deel van Andreas, tot het begin van mijn eindspelletje dat leidt tot de klassieke 46/5 in twee richtingen. The other variant is the one where 43! is the winning move and not 48. By the way, after 48? all moves of Black bring a draw! The Applet starts with the capture to 43.

This last variant is not impressive. Of course the World Championship composition is superior in all aspects. However, the 46/5 forcing is worth to be published.

De laatste variant is niet indrukwekkend. Natuurlijk is de Wereldkampioenschap compositie in alle aspecten superieur. Maar toch is de 46/5 forcing waard gepubliceerd te worden.

Forcings

Because of the fact that the subject of this article is about Dutch Books, Dutch Forcings, Dutch Composers and Dutch Opinions this article is only in Dutch. Nevertheless you can understand the compositions, including the variants, the false solutions, etc. So you can enjoy the contents anyway.

Dit arikel is alleen in het Nederlands omdat het gaat over boeken van Arie van der Stoep, zijn Nederlands commentaar bij de Nederlandse composities en over de Nederlandse composities die niet in zijn boeken zijn opgenomen.

Een en ander wordt toegelicht met eerder gepubliceerde forcings van mij die niet in de boeken van Arie voorkomen. Dat is ook het geval met fraaie forcings van Evgraf Zubov. Aan de prachtige composities van Zubov heb ik in mijn Blog al eerder een artikel gewijd.

Het is duidelijk dat Arie zich veel moeite heeft gegeven de twee boeken Miniatuur Forcings en Force Forcings samen te stellen. Maar het is niet duidelijk waarom er zoveel goede forcings ontbreken en er zoveel middelmatige zijn opgenomen. Natuurlijk zijn er ook heel goede bij. Andreas Kuyken levert daar een indrukwekkende bijdrage toe. Met Frans Hermelink op de uitstekende tweede plaats.
Zelf heb ik zeer veel oude stijl forcings gemaakt, zoals die in de boeken van Arie. In dit artikel geef ik daarvan zes voorbeelden. In een volgend artikel wellicht nog meer. Daar zal er dan ook een uitstekende forcing bij zijn die Andreas en ik samen gemaakt hebben. Maar de laatste tijd richt ik mij meer op allround forcings, d.w.z. forcing, combinatie en eindspel met verschillende scherpe varianten in één compositie. Zoals de vorige Blog artikelen laten zien.

De stand van eerste Applet lijkt eenvoudig te winnen met steeds gedwongen zetten van zwart: 16-11(22-28)32-27(24-29)11-6(29-34)44-39,48 x 39(28-33)39 x 28(23 x 21)26 x 17(18-23)6-1(23-28) 1-29(19-24)29 x 15(25-30)35 x 24 (28-33) en het blijkt dat zwart het toch overleeft.

De volgende is totaal anders, maar toch ook duidelijk interessanter dan vele in Forse Forcings die vanzelfsprekende eerste zetten van beide kleuren hebben, gevolgd door een combinatie met een overbekend slot.

Ook aan de spectaculaire schijn-oplossing is een Applet gewijd. Alle zwarte zetten zijn gedwongen. Dat gaat als volgt:

Ik heb er één uitgezocht die duidelijk minder is dan de andere van dit artikel, maar die nog steeds goed mee zou kunnen doen met de Forse Forcings. Arie van der Stoep vindt de kwailteit van de aanvangsstanden in zijn boeken van groot belang en noemt daarvoor enige criteria. Daar kan men begrip voor hebben, maar het heeft wat weg van de beoordeling van een Jazz Combo gebaseerd op of zij hun instrumenten voldoende gepoetst hebben. Terwijl het, zoals ook bij dammen, toch eigenlijk om het spelen gaat.
Hoe dan ook, deze forcing is makkelijk te volgen. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt 45 de eerst zet, maar 46-41 is de zet om te winnen.

Nu maar snel naar de Miniatuur Forcings. Een heel oude deze keer. Vanaf de aanvangsstand van de Applet hieronder kan wit natuurlijk niet 21-17 (11-16) 17-11 spelen, want dan volgt (16-21) 11-6 (27, 11, 34, 11). Maar na 21-17 (11-16) 40-34, 35 x 44 is het wel helemaal uit. Zwart moet na 21-17 dus wat anders verzinnen en dat laat de Applet zien.

De laatste van dit artikel spant de kroon. Het is een Miniatuur Forcing waar beide kleuren het de tegenstander zo moeilijk mogelijk maken. Het eerste hoogtepunt is het moment na de vierde zet (9-13) waar zwart dreigt met (13-19-23-28) naar dam te gaan lopen. Daar heeft wit echter wat op gevonden!

All in One Again,Combinations, Forcings. Endgames

Is is not so easy to find positions where combinations and/or forcings have something special to offer and result at an outstanding endgame with a number of thematic variants. Every move of White must be fully thematic and Black preferably should have a diferrent choice of moves to play, like in a real game. This article contains two of those attempts.

Het is niet zo eenvoudig posities te vinden met combinaties en /of forcings die iets bijzonders te bieden hebben en resulteren in een buitengewoon eindspel met een aantal scherpe varianten. Iedere zet van wit moet scherp zijn en zwart moet bij voorkeur verschillende keuzes hebben, zoals in een echte partij.

The first of the two compositions of this article starts with a simple combination, but with a big surprise. The suprise is that White does not choose to go for promotion, but capture backwards! The reason is that after 39 x 6 (27-32) White cannot play 6-1 because Black has a draw immediately. White cannot wait either.
De eerste van de twee composities van dit artikel beging met een eenvoudige combinatie, maar met een grote verrassing. De verrassing is dat wit niet kiest ervoor keist zo snle als mogelijk te promoveren,maar naar achteren slaat! De reden is dat na 39 x 6 (27-32) wit geen 6-1 spelen kan omdat zwart dan met een plakker direct remise maakt. Wit kan ook niet wachten.

After 39 x 26 Black has to play (27-32), because otherwise 26-21, 23-19 wins easily. After (27-32) White has to play 44-39!! in order to avoid (30-34). After 44-39 there are three thematic variants! The first Applet gives the combination and the first variant. Quite nice is that White does not play 19-------5, but makes the promotion at the side that was not winning after 39 x 6 !
Na 39 x 26 moet zwart (27-32) spelen, omdat wit anders met 26-21, 23-19 gemakkelijk wint. Na 37-32 moet wit 44-39!! spelen om (30-34) te verhinderen. Na 44-39 zijn er drie thematische varianten! De eerste Applet laat de combinatie zien en de eerste variant. Grappig is dat wit geen 19--------5 speelt, maar promoveert aan de kant waar 39 x 6 niet gewonnen was!

The next variant is a bit deeper, we start after 4. 39x26 27-32. The surprise is that White allows Black to get a King.
De volgende variant is wat dieper, we beginnen na 4. 39x26 27-32. De verrassing is dat wit toestaat dat zwart een dam haalt.

! The third variant looks evident, but has a number of precise moves like 44-39! and 19-13! and 34-30!(instead of 4-15?(33-39!)=. The Applet below gives the solution from the start to the end of the composition.
De derde variant lijkt vanzelfsprekend, maar er zijn een stel nauwkeurige zetten nodg zoals 44-39! en 19-13! en 34-30! i.p.v. 4-15? (33-39!)=. De volgende Applet laat de oplossing zien van begin tot eind van de compositie.

The seond composition of this article is of a very high level, An extraordinary forcing, followed by an unusual combination and two fully different thematic variants. With (2-7) Black has threatend to win his lost Man back. White is forced to play 17-12 and then Black goes to his way to promotion. One of the suprising moves is 15. 31-26!

De tweede compositie van dit artikel is van een heel hoog niveau. Een buitengewone forcing, gevolgd door een ongebruikelijke combinatie en twee heel verschillende scherpe varianten. Met (2-7) heeft zwart gedreigd zijn verloren stuk terug te innen. Wit is gedwongen 17-12 te spelen en dan gaat zwart op weg naar promotie. Een van verrassende zetten is 15. 31-26!
